Designing labeled graph classifiers by exploiting the R\'enyi entropy of the dissimilarity representation
Representing patterns as labeled graphs is becoming increasingly common in
the broad field of computational intelligence. Accordingly, a wide repertoire
of pattern recognition tools, such as classifiers and knowledge discovery
procedures, are nowadays available and tested for various datasets of labeled
graphs. However, the design of effective learning procedures operating in the
space of labeled graphs is still a challenging problem, especially from the
computational complexity viewpoint. In this paper, we present a major
improvement of a general-purpose classifier for graphs, which is conceived on
an interplay between dissimilarity representation, clustering,
information-theoretic techniques, and evolutionary optimization algorithms. The
improvement focuses on a specific key subroutine devised to compress the input
data. We prove different theorems which are fundamental to the setting of the
parameters controlling such a compression operation. We demonstrate the
effectiveness of the resulting classifier by benchmarking the developed
variants on well-known datasets of labeled graphs, considering as distinct
performance indicators the classification accuracy, computing time, and
parsimony in terms of structural complexity of the synthesized classification
models. The results show state-of-the-art standards in terms of test set
accuracy and a considerable speed-up for what concerns the computing time.Comment: Revised versio
Wavelets and their use
This review paper is intended to give a useful guide for those who want to
apply discrete wavelets in their practice. The notion of wavelets and their use
in practical computing and various applications are briefly described, but
rigorous proofs of mathematical statements are omitted, and the reader is just
referred to corresponding literature. The multiresolution analysis and fast
wavelet transform became a standard procedure for dealing with discrete
wavelets. The proper choice of a wavelet and use of nonstandard matrix
multiplication are often crucial for achievement of a goal. Analysis of various
functions with the help of wavelets allows to reveal fractal structures,
singularities etc. Wavelet transform of operator expressions helps solve some
equations. In practical applications one deals often with the discretized
functions, and the problem of stability of wavelet transform and corresponding
numerical algorithms becomes important. After discussing all these topics we
turn to practical applications of the wavelet machinery. They are so numerous
that we have to limit ourselves by some examples only. The authors would be
grateful for any comments which improve this review paper and move us closer to
the goal proclaimed in the first phrase of the abstract.Comment: 63 pages with 22 ps-figures, to be published in Physics-Uspekh
Review of Face Detection Systems Based Artificial Neural Networks Algorithms
Face detection is one of the most relevant applications of image processing
and biometric systems. Artificial neural networks (ANN) have been used in the
field of image processing and pattern recognition. There is lack of literature
surveys which give overview about the studies and researches related to the
using of ANN in face detection. Therefore, this research includes a general
review of face detection studies and systems which based on different ANN
approaches and algorithms. The strengths and limitations of these literature
studies and systems were included also.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, IJMA Journa
