Performance Evaluation of Real-Time Scheduling Heuristics for Energy Harvesting Systems
International audienceEnergy constrained systems can increase their usable lifetimes by extracting energy from their environment. This is known as energy harvesting. This paper investigates scheduling issues in uni-processor real time embedded systems using regenerative energy. Task scheduling should account for the properties of the regenerative energy source which fluctuates, capacity of the energy storage as well as deadlines of the time critical tasks that characterize most of real time embedded systems. In this context, designing efficient scheduling strategies is significantly more complex compared to conventional real-time scheduling. In this paper we compare several scheduling heuristics with the optimal algorithm known as LSA (Lazy Scheduling Algorithm). Energy regeneration from suspension dynamic modes and self-powered actuation

The generated power associated with bounce, pitch and roll modes of vehicle dynamics is determined through analysis. The potential values of power generation from these three modes are calculated. Next, experiments are carried out using a vehicle with a four jack shaker rig to validate the analytical values of potential power harvest. For the considered vehicle, maximum theoretical power values of 1.1kW, 0.88kW and 0.97kW are associated with the bounce, pitch and roll modes, respectively, at 20 Hz excitation frequency and peak to peak displacement amplitude of 5 mm at each wheel, as applied by the shaker. The corresponding experimentally power values are 0.98kW, 0.74kW and 0.78kW. An experimental rig is also developed to study the behavior of regenerative actuators in generating electrical power from kinetic energy. This rig represents a quarter-vehicle suspension model where the viscous damper in the shock absorber system is replaced by a regenerative system. The rig is able to demonstrate the actual electrical power that can be harvested using a regenerative system. The concept of self-powered actuation using the harvested energy from suspension is discussed with regard to applications of self-powered vibration control. The effect of suspension energy regeneration on ride comfort and road handling is presented in conjunction with energy harvesting associated with random road excitations.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Wireless Information and Energy Transfer for Two-Hop Non-Regenerative MIMO-OFDM Relay Networks
This paper investigates the simultaneous wireless information and energy
transfer for the non-regenerative multipleinput multiple-output orthogonal
frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) relaying system. By considering two
practical receiver architectures, we present two protocols, time switchingbased
relaying (TSR) and power splitting-based relaying (PSR). To explore the system
performance limit, we formulate two optimization problems to maximize the
end-to-end achievable information rate with the full channel state information
(CSI) assumption. Since both problems are non-convex and have no known solution
method, we firstly derive some explicit results by theoretical analysis and
then design effective algorithms for them. Numerical results show that the
performances of both protocols are greatly affected by the relay position.
Specifically, PSR and TSR show very different behaviors to the variation of
relay position. The achievable information rate of PSR monotonically decreases
when the relay moves from the source towards the destination, but for TSR, the
performance is relatively worse when the relay is placed in the middle of the
source and the destination. This is the first time to observe such a
phenomenon. In addition, it is also shown that PSR always outperforms TSR in
such a MIMO-OFDM relaying system. Moreover, the effect of the number of

Making meaningful comparisons between road and rail – substituting average energy consumption data for rail with empirical analysis
Within the transport sector, modal shift towards more efficient and less polluting modes could be a key policy goal to help meet targets to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. However, making comparisons between modes is not necessarily straightforward. Average energy and emissions data are often relied upon, particularly for, rail, which may not be applicable to a given context. Some UK train operating companies have recently fitted electricity metres to their trains, from which energy consumption data have been obtained. This has enabled an understanding to be gained of how energy consumption and related emissions are affected by a number of factors, including train and service type. Comparisons are made with existing data for road and rail. It is noted that although more specific data can be useful in informing policy and making some decisions, average data continue to play an important role when considering the overall picture
