    On Derandomizing Local Distributed Algorithms

    The gap between the known randomized and deterministic local distributed algorithms underlies arguably the most fundamental and central open question in distributed graph algorithms. In this paper, we develop a generic and clean recipe for derandomizing LOCAL algorithms. We also exhibit how this simple recipe leads to significant improvements on a number of problem. Two main results are: - An improved distributed hypergraph maximal matching algorithm, improving on Fischer, Ghaffari, and Kuhn [FOCS'17], and giving improved algorithms for edge-coloring, maximum matching approximation, and low out-degree edge orientation. The first gives an improved algorithm for Open Problem 11.4 of the book of Barenboim and Elkin, and the last gives the first positive resolution of their Open Problem 11.10. - An improved distributed algorithm for the Lov\'{a}sz Local Lemma, which gets closer to a conjecture of Chang and Pettie [FOCS'17], and moreover leads to improved distributed algorithms for problems such as defective coloring and kk-SAT.Comment: 37 page

    On the Power of Advice and Randomization for Online Bipartite Matching

    While randomized online algorithms have access to a sequence of uniform random bits, deterministic online algorithms with advice have access to a sequence of advice bits, i.e., bits that are set by an all powerful oracle prior to the processing of the request sequence. Advice bits are at least as helpful as random bits, but how helpful are they? In this work, we investigate the power of advice bits and random bits for online maximum bipartite matching (MBM). The well-known Karp-Vazirani-Vazirani algorithm is an optimal randomized (11e)(1-\frac{1}{e})-competitive algorithm for \textsc{MBM} that requires access to Θ(nlogn)\Theta(n \log n) uniform random bits. We show that Ω(log(1ϵ)n)\Omega(\log(\frac{1}{\epsilon}) n) advice bits are necessary and O(1ϵ5n)O(\frac{1}{\epsilon^5} n) sufficient in order to obtain a (1ϵ)(1-\epsilon)-competitive deterministic advice algorithm. Furthermore, for a large natural class of deterministic advice algorithms, we prove that Ω(logloglogn)\Omega(\log \log \log n) advice bits are required in order to improve on the 12\frac{1}{2}-competitiveness of the best deterministic online algorithm, while it is known that O(logn)O(\log n) bits are sufficient. Last, we give a randomized online algorithm that uses cnc n random bits, for integers c1c \ge 1, and a competitive ratio that approaches 11e1-\frac{1}{e} very quickly as cc is increasing. For example if c=10c = 10, then the difference between 11e1-\frac{1}{e} and the achieved competitive ratio is less than 0.00020.0002

    Coresets Meet EDCS: Algorithms for Matching and Vertex Cover on Massive Graphs

    As massive graphs become more prevalent, there is a rapidly growing need for scalable algorithms that solve classical graph problems, such as maximum matching and minimum vertex cover, on large datasets. For massive inputs, several different computational models have been introduced, including the streaming model, the distributed communication model, and the massively parallel computation (MPC) model that is a common abstraction of MapReduce-style computation. In each model, algorithms are analyzed in terms of resources such as space used or rounds of communication needed, in addition to the more traditional approximation ratio. In this paper, we give a single unified approach that yields better approximation algorithms for matching and vertex cover in all these models. The highlights include: * The first one pass, significantly-better-than-2-approximation for matching in random arrival streams that uses subquadratic space, namely a (1.5+ϵ)(1.5+\epsilon)-approximation streaming algorithm that uses O(n1.5)O(n^{1.5}) space for constant ϵ>0\epsilon > 0. * The first 2-round, better-than-2-approximation for matching in the MPC model that uses subquadratic space per machine, namely a (1.5+ϵ)(1.5+\epsilon)-approximation algorithm with O(mn+n)O(\sqrt{mn} + n) memory per machine for constant ϵ>0\epsilon > 0. By building on our unified approach, we further develop parallel algorithms in the MPC model that give a (1+ϵ)(1 + \epsilon)-approximation to matching and an O(1)O(1)-approximation to vertex cover in only O(loglogn)O(\log\log{n}) MPC rounds and O(n/polylog(n))O(n/poly\log{(n)}) memory per machine. These results settle multiple open questions posed in the recent paper of Czumaj~et.al. [STOC 2018]

    Matroid Online Bipartite Matching and Vertex Cover

    The Adwords and Online Bipartite Matching problems have enjoyed a renewed attention over the past decade due to their connection to Internet advertising. Our community has contributed, among other things, new models (notably stochastic) and extensions to the classical formulations to address the issues that arise from practical needs. In this paper, we propose a new generalization based on matroids and show that many of the previous results extend to this more general setting. Because of the rich structures and expressive power of matroids, our new setting is potentially of interest both in theory and in practice. In the classical version of the problem, the offline side of a bipartite graph is known initially while vertices from the online side arrive one at a time along with their incident edges. The objective is to maintain a decent approximate matching from which no edge can be removed. Our generalization, called Matroid Online Bipartite Matching, additionally requires that the set of matched offline vertices be independent in a given matroid. In particular, the case of partition matroids corresponds to the natural scenario where each advertiser manages multiple ads with a fixed total budget. Our algorithms attain the same performance as the classical version of the problems considered, which are often provably the best possible. We present 11/e1-1/e-competitive algorithms for Matroid Online Bipartite Matching under the small bid assumption, as well as a 11/e1-1/e-competitive algorithm for Matroid Online Bipartite Matching in the random arrival model. A key technical ingredient of our results is a carefully designed primal-dual waterfilling procedure that accommodates for matroid constraints.     Derandomization of Online Assignment Algorithms for Dynamic Graphs

    This paper analyzes different online algorithms for the problem of assigning weights to edges in a fully-connected bipartite graph that minimizes the overall cost while satisfying constraints. Edges in this graph may disappear and reappear over time. Performance of these algorithms is measured using simulations. This paper also attempts to derandomize the randomized online algorithm for this problem

    On a generalization of iterated and randomized rounding

    We give a general method for rounding linear programs that combines the commonly used iterated rounding and randomized rounding techniques. In particular, we show that whenever iterated rounding can be applied to a problem with some slack, there is a randomized procedure that returns an integral solution that satisfies the guarantees of iterated rounding and also has concentration properties. We use this to give new results for several classic problems where iterated rounding has been useful
