    Two-Hop Connectivity to the Roadside in a VANET Under the Random Connection Model

    We compute the expected number of cars that have at least one two-hop path to a fixed roadside unit in a one-dimensional vehicular ad hoc network in which other cars can be used as relays to reach a roadside unit when they do not have a reliable direct link. The pairwise channels between cars experience Rayleigh fading in the random connection model, and so exist, with probability function of the mutual distance between the cars, or between the cars and the roadside unit. We derive exact equivalents for this expected number of cars when the car density ρ\rho tends to zero and to infinity, and determine its behaviour using an infinite oscillating power series in ρ\rho, which is accurate for all regimes. We also corroborate those findings to a realistic situation, using snapshots of actual traffic data. Finally, a normal approximation is discussed for the probability mass function of the number of cars with a two-hop connection to the origin. The probability mass function appears to be well fitted by a Gaussian approximation with mean equal to the expected number of cars with two hops to the origin.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure

    Dirac's theorem for random regular graphs

    We prove a `resilience' version of Dirac's theorem in the setting of random regular graphs. More precisely, we show that, whenever dd is sufficiently large compared to ε>0\varepsilon>0, a.a.s. the following holds: let GG' be any subgraph of the random nn-vertex dd-regular graph Gn,dG_{n,d} with minimum degree at least (1/2+ε)d(1/2+\varepsilon)d. Then GG' is Hamiltonian. This proves a conjecture of Ben-Shimon, Krivelevich and Sudakov. Our result is best possible: firstly, the condition that dd is large cannot be omitted, and secondly, the minimum degree bound cannot be improved.Comment: Final accepted version, to appear in Combinatorics, Probability & Computin

    Crux and long cycles in graphs

    We introduce a notion of the \emph{crux} of a graph GG, measuring the order of a smallest dense subgraph in GG. This simple-looking notion leads to some generalisations of known results about cycles, offering an interesting paradigm of `replacing average degree by crux'. In particular, we prove that \emph{every} graph contains a cycle of length linear in its crux. Long proved that every subgraph of a hypercube QmQ^m (resp. discrete torus C3mC_3^m) with average degree dd contains a path of length 2d/22^{d/2} (resp. 2d/42^{d/4}), and conjectured that there should be a path of length 2d12^{d}-1 (resp. 3d/213^{d/2}-1). As a corollary of our result, together with isoperimetric inequalities, we close these exponential gaps giving asymptotically optimal bounds on long paths in hypercubes, discrete tori, and more generally Hamming graphs. We also consider random subgraphs of C4C_4-free graphs and hypercubes, proving near optimal bounds on lengths of long cycles

    Threshold phenomena in random graphs

    In the 1950s, random graphs appeared for the first time in a result of the prolific hungarian mathematician Pál Erd\H{o}s. Since then, interest in random graph theory has only grown up until now. In its first stages, the basis of its theory were set, while they were mainly used in probability and combinatorics theory. However, with the new century and the boom of technologies like the World Wide Web, random graphs are even more important since they are extremely useful to handle problems in fields like network and communication theory. Because of this fact, nowadays random graphs are widely studied by the mathematical community around the world and new promising results have been recently achieved, showing an exciting future for this field. In this bachelor thesis, we focus our study on the threshold phenomena for graph properties within random graphs
