The day after: RSCVD lesson on resource sharing

    Get PDF
The initiative “Resource Sharing in the Times of COVID-19” (RSCVD) was launched by the IFLA DDRS Committee to help libraries to fulfill users’ requests and information needs during the pandemic emergency. We describe our RSCVD experience of Italian volunteering librarians who provided and go on to provide materials through secure systems from libraries of the NILDE Network for the worldwide librarians. We present difficulties, results and open questions regarding document delivery and resource sharing exchanges. We can highlight benefits (international networking) and critical points (unsuccessful research of electronic documents). Finally we propose suggestions to better retrieve papers and books

This publication has been written in the framework of the European Erasmus+ project “HERMES - Strengthening digital resource sharing during COVID and beyond”, with the aim of promoting a wide reflection about the meaning and practices of resource sharing involving the worldwide information community and fostering the emergence of a common perspective. Resource sharing is an important and long-standing function of libraries, but resource sharing practices are rarely featured in library and information science programs. This publication is intended to provide librarians, library practitioners, as well as teachers, researchers, and students of universities and research organizations and other interested parties, a foundation in resource sharing principles, practices and management. This publication provides an overview of where things stand today with resource sharing, including key trends, challenges, opportunities, and priorities. The publication seeks to address international resource sharing, exploring the current state of European and international resource sharing systems and the governing laws and regulations and includes case studies and best practices from various countries. Despite authors representing ten countries and efforts to seek information from many more, the authors acknowledge that the publication is not exhaustive on all countries, regions, and laws around the world. Instead, this work should be a good point of entry for people new to resource sharing, but also stimulating for experienced professionals. The author’s ambition is for it to become a must-read piece in the wider resource sharing world and inspire more libraries to participate in open resource sharing practices both locally and internationally

During 2020 the global pandemic resulted in many library buildings being closed and services moving fully online. Resource sharing activities have become either impossible or very difficult to perform for many libraries, but users’ information needs remained the same or increased because of the situation of emergency. The IFLA DDRS Committee launched the initiative “Resource Sharing in the Times of COVID-19” (acronym: RSCVD) and a simple on line form was created to request the materials requested by users. The DDRS committee members and volunteering librarians worldwide provided the materials through the OCLC Article Exchange Service or other secure systems from their libraries collections. The NILDE Network and the NILDE Commitee of Libraries (CBN) supported and partecipated in RSCVD initiative since the beginning: therefore the "RSCVD Virtual Library of CBN" was created with the aim to act as intermediary between RSCVD requesting libraries and NILDE supplying libraries. Requests from RSCVD have been handled by a small group of CBN volunteers

Grantseeking, Technology Renovation, and Creative Solutions to Support Library Access and Online Teaching and Learning During the Global COVID-19 Outbreak

The sudden global epidemiological outbreak in early spring 2020 challenged the academic libraries’ Access and Resource Sharing (ARS) department and prevented staff from providing the types of essential services that its users expect and require. With the full closure of campus and all courses moving online within a week, ARS staff were put on the front lines of finding ways to continue providing patrons with access to the library’s physical collections while library buildings were closed. This paper details how the ARS community and a large research university library’s ARS department responded and adapted to these rapid changes, acted creatively, and reinvented services through collaboration, creative solutions, grantseeking, and technology renovation. ARS staff continued to test a scan-beside-the-stacks methodology through a grant-funded project to create an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) mobile cart. This mobile cart allowed for a single employee to handle all items to complete the digital conversion of print materials and reduced the risk of coronavirus transfer between library staff members during the COVID-19 pandemic. An on-demand book digitization program in collaboration with multiple departments opened up access to resources to effectively fulfill patrons’ needs. Through these and other adaptations, ARS staff retained their professional commitment to provide materials and a high level of services to their users
