Requirements and modelling of fast particle injection in RFX-mod tokamak plasmas
The planned upgrade of the RFX-mod device is a good opportunity to widen the operational space of the machine, in both RFP and tokamak configurations. Installation of a power neutral beam injector is also envisaged and a NB system compatible with RFX-mod, formerly installed in TPE-RX, is already available on site. In this work, the METIS simulator is used to study the feasibility of TPE-RX injector integration in RFX-mod circular tokamak plasmas. METIS code allows the simulation of a full tokamak discharge, with the addition of the neutral beam injection (NBI) which, in METIS, is described by a decay equation applied in a simplified geometry and an analytical solution of the Fokker\u2013Planck equation. In this work, RFX-mod scenarios with NBI have been studied, with careful attention to the beam absorption and plasma response to the additional heating
Stack- and Queue-like Dynamics in Recurrent Neural Networks
What dynamics do simple recurrent networks (SRNs) develop to represent stack-like and queue-like memories? SRNs have been widely used as models in cognitive science. However, they are interesting in their own right as non-symbolic computing devices from the viewpoints of analogue computing and dynamical systems theory. In this paper, SRNs are trained oil two prototypical formal languages with recursive structures that need stack-like or queue-like memories for processing, respectively. The evolved dynamics are analysed, then interpreted in terms of simple dynamical systems, and the different ease with which SRNs aquire them is related to the properties of these simple dynamical Within the dynamical systems framework, it is concluded that the stack-like language is simpler than the queue-like language, without making use of arguments from symbolic computation theory
Expression of MHC II genes
Innate and adaptive immunity are connected via antigen processing and
presentation (APP), which results in the presentation of antigenic peptides to
T cells in the complex with the major histocompatibility (MHC) determinants.
MHC class II (MHC II) determinants present antigens to CD4+ T cells, which are
the main regulators of the immune response. Their genes are transcribed from
compact promoters that form first the MHC II enhanceosome, which contains
DNA-bound activators and then the MHC II transcriptosome with the addition of
the class II transactivator (CIITA). CIITA is the master regulator of MHC II
transcription. It is expressed constitutively in dendritic cells (DC) and
mature B cells and is inducible in most other cell types. Three isoforms of
CIITA exist, depending on cell type and inducing signals. CIITA is regulated at
the levels of transcription and post-translational modifications, which are
still not very clear. Inappropriate immune responses are found in several
diseases, including cancer and autoimmunity. Since CIITA regulates the
expression of MHC II genes, it is involved directly in the regulation of the
immune response. The knowledge of CIITA will facilitate the manipulation of the
immune response and might contribute to the treatment of these diseases
Statistical features of edge turbulence in RFX-mod from Gas Puffing Imaging
Plasma density fluctuations in the edge plasma of the RFX-mod device are
measured through the Gas Puffing Imaging Diagnostics. Statistical features of
the signal are quantified in terms of the Probability Distribution Function
(PDF), and computed for several kinds of discharges. The PDFs from discharges
without particular control methods are found to be adequately described by a
Gamma function, consistently with the recent results by Graves et al [J.P.
Graves, et al, Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 47, L1 (2005)]. On the other hand,
pulses with external methods for plasma control feature modified PDFs. A first
empirical analysis suggests that they may be interpolated through a linear
combination of simple functions. An inspection of the literature shows that
this kind of PDFs is common to other devices as well, and has been suggested to
be due to the simultaneous presence of different mechanisms driving
respectively coherent bursts and gaussian background turbulence. An attempt is
made to relate differences in the PDFs to plasma conditions such as the local
shift of the plasma column. A simple phenomenological model to interpret the
nature of the PDF and assign a meaning to its parameters is also developed.Comment: 27 pages. Published in PPC
Microturbulence studies in RFX-mod
Present-days Reversed Field Pinches (RFPs) are characterized by quasi-laminar
magnetic configurations in their core, whose boundaries feature sharp internal
transport barriers, in analogy with tokamaks and stellarators. The abatement of
magnetic chaos leads to the reduction of associated particle and heat transport
along wandering field lines. At the same time, the growth of steep temperature
gradients may trigger drift microinstabilities. In this work we summarize the
work recently done in the RFP RFX-mod in order to assess the existence and the
impact upon transport of such electrostatic and electromagnetic
microinstabilities as Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG), Trapped Electron Modes

Examining Exchange Rates Exposure, J-Curve and the Marshall-Lerner Condition for High Frequency Trade Series between China and Malaysia
Over the last decade, China and Malaysia have committed to export-led growth policy based on maintenance of their undervalued currencies. Both nations had succumbed to pressure of revaluation to de-peg their currency against the USD, the same day in July 2005. This unique scenario motivated us to examine the dynamic nexus of exchange rate impact on bilateral export and import flows between China and Malaysia. Our analysis contributed in using high frequency monthly data for the recent period from January 1990 to January 2008, based on the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound testing procedure and generalised impulse response analysis. Our empirical findings reveal that the Marshall-Lerner condition holds that real depreciation accelerates trade expansion in the long run but only the short run import demands adhere to the potential J-curve pattern. Domestic and foreign incomes are significant and correctly signed, suggesting that the China-Malaysia exports and imports are determined by demand side effects. Arena: A General Evaluation Platform and Building Toolkit for Multi-Agent Intelligence
Learning agents that are not only capable of taking tests, but also
innovating is becoming a hot topic in AI. One of the most promising paths
towards this vision is multi-agent learning, where agents act as the
environment for each other, and improving each agent means proposing new
problems for others. However, existing evaluation platforms are either not
compatible with multi-agent settings, or limited to a specific game. That is,
there is not yet a general evaluation platform for research on multi-agent
intelligence. To this end, we introduce Arena, a general evaluation platform
for multi-agent intelligence with 35 games of diverse logics and
representations. Furthermore, multi-agent intelligence is still at the stage
where many problems remain unexplored. Therefore, we provide a building toolkit
for researchers to easily invent and build novel multi-agent problems from the
provided game set based on a GUI-configurable social tree and five basic
multi-agent reward schemes. Finally, we provide Python implementations of five
state-of-the-art deep multi-agent reinforcement learning baselines. Along with
the baseline implementations, we release a set of 100 best agents/teams that we
can train with different training schemes for each game, as the base for
evaluating agents with population performance. As such, the research community
can perform comparisons under a stable and uniform standard. All the
implementations and accompanied tutorials have been open-sourced for the

Proof of Bose-Einstein Condensation for Dilute Trapped Gases
The ground state of bosonic atoms in a trap has been shown experimentally to
display Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). We prove this fact theoretically for
bosons with two-body repulsive interaction potentials in the dilute limit,
starting from the basic Schroedinger equation; the condensation is 100% into
the state that minimizes the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. This is the
first rigorous proof of BEC in a physically realistic, continuum model.Comment: Revised version with some simplifications and clarifications. To

Microtearing Modes in Reversed Field Pinch Plasmas
In the reversed field pinch RFX-mod strong electron temperature gradients
develop when the Single-Helical-Axis regime is achieved. Gyrokinetic
calculations show that in the region of the strong temperature gradients
microtearing instabilities are the dominant turbulent mechanism acting on the
ion Larmor radius scale. The quasi-linear evaluation of the electron thermal
conductivity is in good agreement with the experimental estimates.Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letter
