Performance analysis of the intelligent mobility optimization CRRM approach using a markovian chain model
Due to the increasing demand of wireless services, mobile technology has rapidly progressed towards the fourth generation (4G) networking paradigm. This generation will be heterogeneous in nature and it can be achieved through the integration of different Radio Access Technologies (RATs) over a common platform. Common Radio Resource Management (CRRM) was proposed to manage radio resource utilization in heterogeneous wireless networks and to provide required Quality of Service (QoS) for allocated calls. RAT selection algorithms are an integral part of the CRRM algorithms. Their role is to decide, when a new or Vertical Handover (VHO) call is requested, which of the available RATs is most suitable to fit the need of the incoming call and when to admit them. This paper extends our earlier work on the proposed intelligent hybrid mobility optimization RAT selection approach which allocates users in high mobility to the most suitable RAT and proposes an analytical presentation of the proposed approach in a multidimensional Markov chain model. A comparison for the performance of centralized load-balancing, distributed and the proposed intelligent mobility optimization algorithms is presented in terms of new calls blocking probability, VHO calls dropping probability, users' satisfactions probability, average networks load and average system throughput. Simulation and analytical results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than the centralized loadbalancing and distributed algorithms. © 2014 ACADEMY PUBLISHER
Intelligent hybrid cheapest cost and mobility optimization RAT selection approaches for heterogeneous wireless networks
The evolution of wireless networks has led to the deployment of different Radio Access Technologies (RATs) such as UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN), Long Term Evolution (LTE), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Mobile Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) which are integrated through a common platform. Coordinated Dynamic Spectrum Management of LTE-U and Wi-Fi Networks
This paper investigates the co-existence of Wi-Fi and LTE in emerging
unlicensed frequency bands which are intended to accommodate multiple radio
access technologies. Wi-Fi and LTE are the two most prominent access
technologies being deployed today, motivating further study of the inter-system
interference arising in such shared spectrum scenarios as well as possible
techniques for enabling improved co-existence. An analytical model for
evaluating the baseline performance of co-existing Wi-Fi and LTE is developed
and used to obtain baseline performance measures. The results show that both
Wi-Fi and LTE networks cause significant interference to each other and that
the degradation is dependent on a number of factors such as power levels and
physical topology. The model-based results are partially validated via
experimental evaluations using USRP based SDR platforms on the ORBIT testbed.
Further, inter-network coordination with logically centralized radio resource
management across Wi-Fi and LTE systems is proposed as a possible solution for
improved co-existence. Numerical results are presented showing significant
gains in both Wi-Fi and LTE performance with the proposed inter-network

Energy efficiency in heterogeneous wireless access networks
In this article, we bring forward the important aspect of energy savings in wireless access networks. We specifically focus on the energy saving opportunities in the recently evolving heterogeneous networks (HetNets), both Single- RAT and Multi-RAT. Issues such as sleep/wakeup cycles and interference management are discussed for co-channel Single-RAT HetNets. In addition to that, a simulation based study for LTE macro-femto HetNets is presented, indicating the need for dynamic energy efficient resource management schemes. Multi-RAT HetNets also come with challenges such as network integration, combined resource management and network selection. Along with a discussion on these challenges, we also investigate the performance of the conventional WLAN-first network selection mechanism in terms of energy efficiency (EE) and suggest that EE can be improved by the application of intelligent call admission control policies
Joint Access-Backhaul Perspective on Mobility Management in 5G Networks
The ongoing efforts in the research development and standardization of 5G, by
both industry and academia, have resulted in the identification of enablers
(Software Defined Networks, Network Function Virtualization, Distributed
Mobility Management, etc.) and critical areas (Mobility management,
Interference management, Joint access-backhaul mechanisms, etc.) that will help
achieve the 5G objectives. During these efforts, it has also been identified
that the 5G networks due to their high degree of heterogeneity, high QoS demand
and the inevitable density (both in terms of access points and users), will
need to have efficient joint backhaul and access mechanisms as well as enhanced
mobility management mechanisms in order to be effective, efficient and
ubiquitous. Therefore, in this paper we first provide a discussion on the
evolution of the backhaul scenario, and the necessity for joint access and
backhaul optimization. Subsequently, and since mobility management mechanisms
can entail the availability, reliability and heterogeneity of the future
backhaul/fronthaul networks as parameters in determining the most optimal
solution for a given context, a study with regards to the effect of future
backhaul/fronthaul scenarios on the design and implementation of mobility
