Introduction to Quantum Information Processing
As a result of the capabilities of quantum information, the science of
quantum information processing is now a prospering, interdisciplinary field
focused on better understanding the possibilities and limitations of the
underlying theory, on developing new applications of quantum information and on
physically realizing controllable quantum devices. The purpose of this primer
is to provide an elementary introduction to quantum information processing, and
then to briefly explain how we hope to exploit the advantages of quantum
information. These two sections can be read independently. For reference, we
have included a glossary of the main terms of quantum information.Comment: 48 pages, to appear in LA Science. Hyperlinked PDF at

Quantum Hamiltonian Complexity
Constraint satisfaction problems are a central pillar of modern computational
complexity theory. This survey provides an introduction to the rapidly growing
field of Quantum Hamiltonian Complexity, which includes the study of quantum
constraint satisfaction problems. Over the past decade and a half, this field
has witnessed fundamental breakthroughs, ranging from the establishment of a
"Quantum Cook-Levin Theorem" to deep insights into the structure of 1D
low-temperature quantum systems via so-called area laws. Our aim here is to
provide a computer science-oriented introduction to the subject in order to
help bridge the language barrier between computer scientists and physicists in
the field. As such, we include the following in this survey: (1) The
motivations and history of the field, (2) a glossary of condensed matter
physics terms explained in computer-science friendly language, (3) overviews of
central ideas from condensed matter physics, such as indistinguishable
particles, mean field theory, tensor networks, and area laws, and (4) brief
expositions of selected computer science-based results in the area. For
example, as part of the latter, we provide a novel information theoretic
presentation of Bravyi's polynomial time algorithm for Quantum 2-SAT.Comment: v4: published version, 127 pages, introduction expanded to include

Quantum Reed-Solomon Codes
After a brief introduction to both quantum computation and quantum error
correction, we show how to construct quantum error-correcting codes based on
classical BCH codes. With these codes, decoding can exploit additional
information about the position of errors. This error model - the quantum
erasure channel - is discussed. Finally, parameters of quantum BCH codes are
provided.Comment: Summary only (2 pages), for the full version see: Proceedings Applied

Quantum information and statistical mechanics: an introduction to frontier
This is a short review on an interdisciplinary field of quantum information
science and statistical mechanics. We first give a pedagogical introduction to
the stabilizer formalism, which is an efficient way to describe an important
class of quantum states, the so-called stabilizer states, and quantum
operations on them. Furthermore, graph states, which are a class of stabilizer
states associated with graphs, and their applications for measurement-based
quantum computation are also mentioned. Based on the stabilizer formalism, we
review two interdisciplinary topics. One is the relation between quantum error
correction codes and spin glass models, which allows us to analyze the
performances of quantum error correction codes by using the knowledge about
phases in statistical models. The other is the relation between the stabilizer
formalism and partition functions of classical spin models, which provides new
quantum and classical algorithms to evaluate partition functions of classical
spin models.Comment: 15pages, 4 figures, to appear in Proceedings of 4th YSM-SPIP (Sendai,
