    Quality and perceived usefulness of process models

    Modeling is now an essential ingredient in business process management and information systems development. The general usefulness of models in these areas is therefore generally accepted. It is also undisputed that the quality of the models has a significant impact on their usefulness. In the literature we can find any number of quality metrics, but hardly any study that investigates their relation with (perceived) usefulness and none that considers their relative impact on usefulness. We take a look at some of the most frequent quality dimensions and their relative impact on the perceived usefulness of models

    Many studies have looked at the factors that control the productivity of collaborative work. We claim that goal commitment and competition have a strong impact on group productivity in collaborative modelling. To substantiate this claim we first take a look at existing factor models to identify the factors that potentially mediate the effect on group productivity. We then investigate the relation between the factors with the help of controlled field experiments in five different organisations. We confirm the theoretical results with the help of structured equation modelling

    How Social Distance of Process Designers Affects the Process of Process Modeling: Insights From a Controlled Experiment

    The increasing adoption of process-aware information systems (PAISs) by enterprises has resulted in large process model collections. Usually, process models are created either by in-house domain experts or external consultants. Thereby, high model quality is crucial, i.e., process models should be syntactically correct and sound, and also reflect the real business processes properly. While numerous guidelines exist for creating correct and sound process models, there is only little work dealing with cognitive aspects affecting process modeling. This paper addresses this gap and presents a controlled experiment using construal level theory. We investigate the influence the social distance of a process designer to the modeled domain has on the creation of process models. In particular, we are able to show significant differences between high and low social distance in respect to model quality and granularity. The results may help enterprises to compose adequate teams for creating or optimizing business process models

    Enterprise repositories comprise numerous business process models either created by in-house domain experts or external business analysts. To enable a widespread use of these process models, high model quality (e.g., soundness) as well as a sufficient level of granularity are crucial. Moreover, they shall reflect the actual business processes properly. Existing modeling guidelines target at creating correct and sound process models, whereas there is only little work dealing with cognitive issues influencing model creation by process designers. This paper addresses this gap and presents a controlled experiment investigating the construal level theory in the context of process modeling. In particular, we investigate the influence the social distance of a process designer to the modeled domain has on the creation of process models. For this purpose, we adopt and apply a gamification approach, which enables us to show significant differences between low and high social distance with respect to the quality, granularity, and structure of the created process models. The results obtained give insights into how enterprises shall compose teams for creating and evolving process models

    The utilization of Accounting Information System (AIS) by the small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMEs) at present is apparently at the minimum level if not to mention the integrated operation. This study attempts to fathom and analyse, first, the impact of subsequently the system quality, the information quality, the top management support upon the perceived usefulness. Second, the effect of the system quality, the information quality, and the top management support on the end-user information satisfaction. Third, how the perceived usefulness affect the end-user information satisfaction. Fourth, to analyze the effect of the system quality, the information quality, and the top management support on end-user information satisfaction via the perceived usefulness. The study observed the designated SMEs managers in a chosen area of targeted location in East Java, Indonesia. The structural equation modelling was employed to study the effect of those variables under study, namely the system quality, information quality, top management support on the end-user information satisfaction through the perceived usefulness. The results revealed that the system quality, the information quality, as well as the top management support proven to be affecting the designated SMEs perceived usefulness. Among those variables under study, it was proved that the system quality, information quality, top management support influence on the end-user information satisfaction. However, the perceived usefulness is an intervening variable that can mediate the effect of system quality, the information quality, the top management support on the end-user information satisfaction

    Multi-Media and Web-based Evaluation of Design Artifacts - Syntactic, Semantic and Pragmatic Quality of Process Models

    Evaluation of design artifacts is of crucial importance in design science research (DSR). A plethora of evaluation approaches and methods can be found in literature; nevertheless, little work has been done so far to investigate the relation between the evaluation strategies, methods an d techniques in DSR evaluations. Prototype implementations, together with case studies seem to be dominant and the technique of choice to evaluate, often complex artifacts. This paper goes beyond the common approach in DSR, and presents a multi-media and web-based DSR evaluation approach focussing on syntactic, semantic and pragmatic quality. We present the definition of evaluation criteria, the selection of evaluation methods and the findings and experiences gained. The results of this paper can support other design science re-search approaches concerned with the evaluation of concepts or process models
