    Towards a general theory for modelling qualitative space

    Qualitative spatial representation and reasoning are techniques for modeling and manipulating objects and relationships in space. Finding ways for defining the complete and sound (physically plausible) set of relationships between spatial objects is a prerequisite for the development and realization of qualitative representation and reasoning formalisms. Establishing the set of sound relationships is a complicated task especially when complex objects are considered. Hence, current approaches to qualitative representation and reasoning are limited to handling simple spatial objects. In this paper, we introduce a constraint-based approach to qualitative representation of topological relationships by defining a set of general soundness rules. The rules reduce the combinatorial set of relations produced by the method to the complete and physically possible ones. The rules are general and apply to objects of arbitrary complexity and together with the representation and reasoning formalism form a theory for qualitative space

    Geospatial Narratives and their Spatio-Temporal Dynamics: Commonsense Reasoning for High-level Analyses in Geographic Information Systems

    The modelling, analysis, and visualisation of dynamic geospatial phenomena has been identified as a key developmental challenge for next-generation Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In this context, the envisaged paradigmatic extensions to contemporary foundational GIS technology raises fundamental questions concerning the ontological, formal representational, and (analytical) computational methods that would underlie their spatial information theoretic underpinnings. We present the conceptual overview and architecture for the development of high-level semantic and qualitative analytical capabilities for dynamic geospatial domains. Building on formal methods in the areas of commonsense reasoning, qualitative reasoning, spatial and temporal representation and reasoning, reasoning about actions and change, and computational models of narrative, we identify concrete theoretical and practical challenges that accrue in the context of formal reasoning about `space, events, actions, and change'. With this as a basis, and within the backdrop of an illustrated scenario involving the spatio-temporal dynamics of urban narratives, we address specific problems and solutions techniques chiefly involving `qualitative abstraction', `data integration and spatial consistency', and `practical geospatial abduction'. From a broad topical viewpoint, we propose that next-generation dynamic GIS technology demands a transdisciplinary scientific perspective that brings together Geography, Artificial Intelligence, and Cognitive Science.     Qualitative spatial and temporal representation and reasoning : efficiency in time and space

Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning (QSTR) provides a human-friendly abstract way to describe and to interpret spatial and temporal information. To describe the qualitative information, QSTR makes use of qualitative relations between entities and usually stores them in a qualitative constraint network (QCN). The QCNs are then used as the basis to process qualitative spatial and temporal information, including qualitative reasoning and query answering. Time efficiency of reasoning techniques in QSTR is critical for applications to deal with qualitative spatial and temporal information in large-scale datasets. In this thesis, we present a special family of tractable subclasses of relations, called distributive subalgebras. We show that several efficient algorithms are applicable to the QCNs over distributive subalgebras for solving important reasoning problems. We also identify maximal distributive subalgebras for popular relation models in QSTR and point out their connections with several previously identified important subclasses. Regarding the network representation in QSTR, there are two important problems, which in turn affect the time efficiency of other applications. First, the network representation can have redundant relations, which will significantly increase the efforts needed for tasks whose efficiency is strongly related to the number of relations in a network. Fortunately, for any QCN over distributive subalgebras of qualitative calculi PA, RCC5, and RCC8, we show that essentially it has a unique subset consisting of non-redundant relations, which expresses the same qualitative information as the original QCN. We also devise an efficient algorithm to construct such subsets. Second, the network representation sometimes requires a large storage space when encoding large-scale data. This could severely limit the ability of relation retrieval for any two given spatial entities. In fact, when the size of a QCN becomes large, it might be too costly or even infeasible to fit the QCN into fast accessible storage and relation retrieval will become inefficient. We propose two alternative representation techniques to compactly encode qualitative spatial relations between regions. For this purpose, the first technique uses minimum bounding rectangles (MBRs) to encode both topological relations and directional relations, while the second technique focuses on encoding topological relations by generating axis-aligned rectangles for spatial entities. We show that for large real-world datasets of regions, these two techniques can significantly reduce the storage size of qualitative spatial information and in the meantime the relations between regions can be efficiently inferred from those simple geometric shapes

    HyperQuaternionE:A hyperbolic embedding model for qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning

    Qualitative spatial/temporal reasoning (QSR/QTR) plays a key role in research on human cognition, e.g., as it relates to navigation, as well as in work on robotics and artificial intelligence. Although previous work has mainly focused on various spatial and temporal calculi, more recently representation learning techniques such as embedding have been applied to reasoning and inference tasks such as query answering and knowledge base completion. These subsymbolic and learnable representations are well suited for handling noise and efficiency problems that plagued prior work. However, applying embedding techniques to spatial and temporal reasoning has received little attention to date. In this paper, we explore two research questions: (1) How do embedding-based methods perform empirically compared to traditional reasoning methods on QSR/QTR problems? (2) If the embedding-based methods are better, what causes this superiority? In order to answer these questions, we first propose a hyperbolic embedding model, called HyperQuaternionE, to capture varying properties of relations (such as symmetry and anti-symmetry), to learn inversion relations and relation compositions (i.e., composition tables), and to model hierarchical structures over entities induced by transitive relations. We conduct various experiments on two synthetic datasets to demonstrate the advantages of our proposed embedding-based method against existing embedding models as well as traditional reasoners with respect to entity inference and relation inference. Additionally, our qualitative analysis reveals that our method is able to learn conceptual neighborhoods implicitly. We conclude that the success of our method is attributed to its ability to model composition tables and learn conceptual neighbors, which are among the core building blocks of QSR/QTR

Questi formalismi sono stati investigati a fondo dalla comunit\ue0 scientifica, ma, nonostante questo grosso interesse, sono state definite poche Description Logics con operatori spaziali e tutte centrate sul Region Connection Calculus. Nella mia tesi considero tutti i pi\uf9 importanti formalismi di Qualitative Spatial Reasoning per mereologie, mereo-topologie e informazioni sulla direzione e studio alcune tecniche generali di ibridazione. Nella tesi presento un\u2019introduzione ai principali formalismi di Qualitative Spatial Reasoning e le principali famiglie di Description Logics. Nel mio lavoro, introduco anche le tecniche di ibridazione per estendere le Description Logics al ragionamento su conoscenza spaziale e presento il potere espressivo dei linguaggi ibridi ottenuti. Vengono presentati infine un risultato generale di para-decidibilit\ue0 per logiche descrittive estese da composition-based role axioms e l\u2019analisi del tradeoff tra espressivit\ue0 e propriet\ue0 computazionali delle logiche descrittive spaziali.Description Logics are a family of expressive Knowledge-Representation formalisms that have been deeply investigated. Nevertheless the few examples of DLs with spatial operators in the current literature are defined to include only the spatial reasoning capabilities corresponding to the Region Connection Calculus. In my thesis I consider all the most important Qualitative Spatial Reasoning formalisms for mereological, mereo-topological and directional information and investigate some general hybridization techniques. I will present a short overview of the main formalisms of Qualitative Spatial Reasoning and the principal families of DLs. I introduce the hybridization techniques to extend DLs to QSR and present the expressiveness of the resulting hybrid languages. I also present a general paradecidability result for undecidable languages equipped with composition-based role axioms and the tradeoff analysis of expressiveness and computational properties for the spatial DLs

    Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning based on And/Or Linear Programming An approach to partially grounded qualitative spatial reasoning

    Acting intelligently in dynamic environments involves anticipating surrounding processes, for example to foresee a dangerous situation or acceptable social behavior. Knowledge about spatial configurations and how they develop over time enables intelligent robots to safely navigate by reasoning about possible actions. The seamless connection of high-level deliberative processes to perception and action selection remains a challenge though. Moreover, an integration should allow the robot to build awareness of these processes as in reality there will be misunderstandings a robot should be able to respond to. My aim is to verify that actions selected by the robot do not violate navigation or safety regulations and thereby endanger the robot or others. Navigation rules specified qualitatively allow an autonomous agent to consistently combine all rules applicable in a context. Within this thesis, I develop a formal, symbolic representation of right-of-way-rules based on a qualitative spatial representation. This cumulative dissertation consists of 5 peer-reviewed papers and 1 manuscript under review. The contribution of this thesis is an approach to represent navigation patterns based on qualitative spatio-temporal representation and the development of corresponding effective sound reasoning techniques. The approach is based on a spatial logic in the sense of Aiello, Pratt-Hartmann, and van Benthem. This logic has clear spatial and temporal semantics and I demonstrate how it allows various navigation rules and social conventions to be represented. I demonstrate the applicability of the developed method in three different areas, an autonomous robotic system in an industrial setting, an autonomous sailing boat, and a robot that should act politely by adhering to social conventions. In all three settings, the navigation behavior is specified by logic formulas. Temporal reasoning is performed via model checking. An important aspect is that a logic symbol, such as \emph{turn left}, comprises a family of movement behaviors rather than a single pre-specified movement command. This enables to incorporate the current spatial context, the possible changing kinematics of the robotic system, and so on without changing a single formula. Additionally, I show that the developed approach can be integrated into various robotic software architectures. Further, an answer to three long standing questions in the field of qualitative spatial reasoning is presented. Using generalized linear programming as a unifying basis for reasoning, one can jointly reason about relations from different qualitative calculi. Also, concrete entities (fixed points, regions fixed in shape and/or position, etc.) can be mixed with free variables. In addition, a realization of qualitative spatial description can be calculated, i.e., a specific instance/example. All three features are important for applications but cannot be handled by other techniques. I advocate the use of And/Or trees to facilitate efficient reasoning and I show the feasibility of my approach. Last but not least, I investigate a fourth question, how to integrate And/Or trees with linear temporal logic, to enable spatio-temporal reasoning

Combining scientific visualisations with interactive and intelligent tools can help create a “habitable” information space. Development of such tools remains largely iterative.     Constraint-Based Qualitative Simulation

    We consider qualitative simulation involving a finite set of qualitative relations in presence of complete knowledge about their interrelationship. We show how it can be naturally captured by means of constraints expressed in temporal logic and constraint satisfaction problems. The constraints relate at each stage the 'past' of a simulation with its 'future'. The benefit of this approach is that it readily leads to an implementation based on constraint technology that can be used to generate simulations and to answer queries about them.Comment: 10 pages, to appear at the conference TIME 200
