Understanding Player Behaviors in Free Online Games
Playing games has become an important part of many people's daily life, and in-game activities constitute a significant portion of their behaviors. On the one hand, understanding the in-game behaviors is essential to game companies' business and game platforms' operation. On the other hand, the in-game behaviors expect to be related to the players' offline behaviors, and analyzing the former may reveal the latter.
This dissertation investigates several major aspects of player behaviors, including playtime, in-game purchases, and in-game social interactions for several types of free online games. It explores their implications about several important questions such as churning prediction, purchasing prediction, and offline personalities and how they relate to the team performance. In particular, we have developed new features or new metrics for better prediction of churning and purchasing and effective prediction of team performance. Our results expect to help improve the operational effectiveness of game companies, as well as the understanding of the team performance in other social contexts.</p
