Denial of service attacks and challenges in broadband wireless networks
Broadband wireless networks are providing internet and related services to end users. The three most important broadband wireless technologies are IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.16, and
Wireless Mesh Network (WMN). Security attacks and
vulnerabilities vary amongst these broadband wireless networks because of differences in topologies, network operations and physical setups. Amongst the various security risks, Denial of Service (DoS) attack is the most severe security threat, as DoS can compromise the availability and integrity of broadband
wireless network. In this paper, we present DoS attack issues in broadband wireless networks, along with possible defenses and future directions

Common security issues and challenges in wireless sensor networks and IEEE 802.11 wireless mesh networks
Both Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) and Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) are multi-hop wireless networks. WMN is an emerging community based integrated broadband wireless network which ensures high bandwidth ubiquitous internet provision to users, while, WSN is application specific and ensures large scale real-time data processing in complex environment. Both these wireless networks have some common vulnerable features which may increase the chances of different sorts of security attacks. Wireless sensor nodes have computation, memory and power limitations, which do not allow for implementation of complex security mechanism. In this paper, we discuss the common limitations and vulnerable features of WMN and WSN, along with the associated security threats and possible countermeasures. We also propose security mechanisms keeping in view the architecture and limitations of both. This article will serve as a baseline guide for the new researchers who are concern with the security aspects of WMN and WSN
A Survey on Wireless Security: Technical Challenges, Recent Advances and Future Trends
This paper examines the security vulnerabilities and threats imposed by the
inherent open nature of wireless communications and to devise efficient defense
mechanisms for improving the wireless network security. We first summarize the
security requirements of wireless networks, including their authenticity,
confidentiality, integrity and availability issues. Next, a comprehensive
overview of security attacks encountered in wireless networks is presented in
view of the network protocol architecture, where the potential security threats
are discussed at each protocol layer. We also provide a survey of the existing
security protocols and algorithms that are adopted in the existing wireless
network standards, such as the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and the long-term
evolution (LTE) systems. Then, we discuss the state-of-the-art in
physical-layer security, which is an emerging technique of securing the open
communications environment against eavesdropping attacks at the physical layer.
We also introduce the family of various jamming attacks and their
counter-measures, including the constant jammer, intermittent jammer, reactive
jammer, adaptive jammer and intelligent jammer. Additionally, we discuss the
integration of physical-layer security into existing authentication and
cryptography mechanisms for further securing wireless networks. Finally, some
technical challenges which remain unresolved at the time of writing are
summarized and the future trends in wireless security are discussed.Comment: 36 pages. Accepted to Appear in Proceedings of the IEEE, 201
Security and Privacy Issues in Wireless Mesh Networks: A Survey
This book chapter identifies various security threats in wireless mesh
network (WMN). Keeping in mind the critical requirement of security and user
privacy in WMNs, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various
possible attacks on different layers of the communication protocol stack for
WMNs and their corresponding defense mechanisms. First, it identifies the
security vulnerabilities in the physical, link, network, transport, application
layers. Furthermore, various possible attacks on the key management protocols,
user authentication and access control protocols, and user privacy preservation
protocols are presented. After enumerating various possible attacks, the
chapter provides a detailed discussion on various existing security mechanisms
and protocols to defend against and wherever possible prevent the possible
attacks. Comparative analyses are also presented on the security schemes with
regards to the cryptographic schemes used, key management strategies deployed,
use of any trusted third party, computation and communication overhead involved
etc. The chapter then presents a brief discussion on various trust management
approaches for WMNs since trust and reputation-based schemes are increasingly
becoming popular for enforcing security in wireless networks. A number of open
problems in security and privacy issues for WMNs are subsequently discussed
before the chapter is finally concluded.Comment: 62 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables. This chapter is an extension of the

A Survey of Different Dos Attacks on Wireless Network
Wireless technologies like Wireless LAN (WLAN) 802.11 picking up ubiquity in all associations, undertakings and colleges because of its profitability, cost sparing when contrasted with wired system and usability by enabling the system clients to move physically while keeping up an association with the wireless system. Wireless systems are main stream among the Laptop client group today in light of the portability and usability. Individuals working through remote association must know about the surroundings because of the different sorts of assaults made by the interlopers. Remote systems are extremely defenseless against (Denial of Service) DoS attacks. DoS attacks are an endeavor to make a machine or system asset inaccessible to its clients. It can happen in numerous layers of OSI demonstrate and can happen in different frame Network clients can ensure their frameworks with Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) security conventions and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), however DoS attack still can't be averted utilizing these conventions. These attacks bring about debasement of the system quality or finish loss of accessibility of the system inside the association. This survey paper makes a review on various kinds of DoS attacks and their countermeasures on the framework systems which depend on the Access Points (AP). The fundamental assaults called Deauthentication and Disassociation Flooding. DoS assaults are considered there avoidance/discovery arrangements. Security Analysis of Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANET)
Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANET) has mostly gained the attention of today's
research efforts, while current solutions to achieve secure VANET, to protect
the network from adversary and attacks still not enough, trying to reach a
satisfactory level, for the driver and manufacturer to achieve safety of life
and infotainment. The need for a robust VANET networks is strongly dependent on
their security and privacy features, which will be discussed in this paper. In
this paper a various types of security problems and challenges of VANET been
analyzed and discussed; we also discuss a set of solutions presented to solve
these challenges and problems.Comment: 6 pages; 2010 Second International Conference on Network

A Lightweight and Attack Resistant Authenticated Routing Protocol for Mobile Adhoc Networks
In mobile ad hoc networks, by attacking the corresponding routing protocol,
an attacker can easily disturb the operations of the network. For ad hoc
networks, till now many secured routing protocols have been proposed which
contains some disadvantages. Therefore security in ad hoc networks is a
controversial area till now. In this paper, we proposed a Lightweight and
Attack Resistant Authenticated Routing Protocol (LARARP) for mobile ad hoc
networks. For the route discovery attacks in MANET routing protocols, our
protocol gives an effective security. It supports the node to drop the invalid
packets earlier by detecting the malicious nodes quickly by verifying the
digital signatures of all the intermediate nodes. It punishes the misbehaving
nodes by decrementing a credit counter and rewards the well behaving nodes by
incrementing the credit counter. Thus it prevents uncompromised nodes from
attacking the routes with malicious or compromised nodes. It is also used to
prevent the denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. The efficiency and effectiveness
of LARARP are verified through the detailed simulation studies.Comment: 14 Pages, IJWM
