Hybrid biometric template protection:Resolving the agony of choice between bloom filters and homomorphic encryption
Abstract Bloom filters (BFs) and homomorphic encryption (HE) are prominent techniques used to design biometric template protection (BTP) schemes that aim to protect sensitive biometric information during storage and biometric comparison. However, the pros and cons of BF‐ and HE‐based BTPs are not well studied in literature. We investigate the strengths and weaknesses of these two approaches since both seem promising from a theoretical viewpoint. Our key insight is to extend our theoretical investigation to cover the practical case of iris recognition on the ground that iris (1) benefits from the alignment‐free property of BFs and (2) induces huge computational burdens when implemented in the HE‐encrypted domain. BF‐based BTPs can be implemented to be either fast with high recognition accuracy while missing the important privacy property of ‘unlinkability’, or to be fast with unlinkability‐property while missing the high accuracy. HE‐based BTPs, on the other hand, are highly secure, achieve good accuracy, and meet the unlinkability‐property, but they are much slower than BF‐based approaches. As a synthesis, we propose a hybrid BTP scheme that combines the good properties of BFs and HE, ensuring unlinkability and high recognition accuracy, while being about seven times faster than the traditional HE‐based approach
A pilot study investigating the effects of a manuka honey sinus rinse compared to a standard sinus rinse on sino-nasal outcome test scores in cystic fibrosis patients
Abstract: Background: People with cystic fibrosis (CF) are prone to bacterial respiratory infections; these are often antibiotic resistant, are difficult to treat, and impact on the quality of life and lung function. The upper respiratory tract can act as a reservoir for these pathogens, and as part of clinical care, sinus rinses are used to alleviate symptoms in the upper airway. We have developed a sinus rinse containing manuka honey, to identify whether it can help improve symptoms or reduce the bacterial load. Methods: We will undertake a randomised controlled trial where 30 adults with CF will be recruited and randomised to either the control or intervention group. Both groups will follow a sinus rinse protocol for 30 days (± 7 days); the control group will use the standard of care rinse, and the intervention group will use a manuka honey rinse. Both groups will provide samples at day 0 and day 30. The primary outcome measure will be a change in the 22-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) score. Secondary outcomes will include changes to quality of life (questionnaire), bacterial load/community composition, and sputum viscosity. Discussion: This trial will look at the use of a manuka honey-infused sinus rinse solution on patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) suffering with sinusitis; it will allow us to determine the efficacy of the manuka honey sinus rinse compared to standard rinse and will allow us to determine if molecular bacterial diversity analysis will provide in-depth information beyond the usual conventional microbiological. It will allow us to determine the feasibility of recruiting participants to this type of trial, allow us to check participant compliance with the protocol, and inform future studies. Trial registration: Approval was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee Wales REC7 reference 18/WA/0319. Results of this study will be published at international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals; they will also be presented to the relevant stakeholders and research networks. Connectivity, confidentiality and confidence: Key issues in the provision of online pro bono activities
The provision of pro bono activities for law students has become an established feature of the undergraduate legal education landscape in Law Schools in the United Kingdom (“UK”) and beyond, providing the experiential elements of clinical legal education programmes. Pro bono activities conducted online, or utilising and enhanced by technologies in other ways (for example, through the development of a mobile phone application providing legal guidance), are increasingly becoming a part of this offering, reflecting wider shifts within legal practice and society and an increasing recognition of the importance of digital literacy skills. This paper will situate these forms of online and technologically-enhanced pro bono activities both within the wider context of contemporary clinical legal education and also as a part of broader professional and societal shifts. It will explore a variety of innovative approaches being taken internationally, including work done by The Open University’s Open Justice Centre in the UK, before moving on to focus on a number of key challenges and opportunities which may arise through the increasing provision of these new forms of pro bono activities by Law Schools. These include the potential and pitfalls of the technology involved, issues with confidentiality (particularly in the context of online legal advice) and the issue of how to foster trust in the online environment. The paper will conclude with a number of suggestions for areas requiring further research and discussion to enable contemporary clinicians to fully utilise the potential of online and technologically-enhanced pro bono activities
The Eroding Artificial/Natural Distinction: Some Consequences for Ecology and Economics
Since Thomas Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962), historians and philosophers of science have paid increasing attention to the implications of disciplinarity. In this chapter we consider restrictions posed to interdisciplinary exchange between ecology and economics that result from a particular kind of commitment to the ideal of disciplinary purity, that is, that each discipline is defined by an appropriate, unique set of objects, methods, theories, and aims. We argue that, when it comes to the objects of study in ecology and economics, ideas of disciplinary purity have been underwritten by the artificial-natural distinction. We then problematize this distinction, and thus disciplinary purity, both conceptually and empirically. Conceptually, the distinction is no longer tenable. Empirically, recent interdisciplinary research has shown the epistemological and policy-oriented benefits of dealing with models which explicitly link anthropogenic (i.e., “artificial”) and non-anthropogenic factors (i.e., “natural”). We conclude that, in the current age of the Anthropocene, it is to be expected that without interdisciplinary exchange, ecology and economics may relinquish global relevance because the distinct and separate systems to which each “pure” science was originally made to apply will only diminish over time
Developing an Algorithm for Securing the Biometric Data Template in the Database

template provides a dependable solution to the problem of user
verification in an identity control system. The template is saved
in the database during the enrollment and compared with query
information in the verification stage. Serious security and
privacy concerns can arise, if raw, unprotected data template is
saved in the database. An attacker can hack the template
information in the database to gain illicit access. A novel
approach of encryption-decryption algorithm utilizing a design
pattern of Model View Template (MVT) is developed to secure
the biometric data template. The model manages information
logically, the view shows the visualization of the data, and the
template addresses the data migration into pattern object. The
established algorithm is based on the cryptographic module of
the Fernet key instance. The Fernet keys are combined to
generate a multiFernet key to produce two encrypted files (byte
and text file). These files are incorporated with Twilio message
and securely preserved in the database. In the event where an
attacker tries to access the biometric data template in the
database, the system alerts the user and stops the attacker from
unauthorized access, and cross-verify the impersonator based on
the validation of the ownership. Thus, helps inform the users and

Can we do better? A qualitative study in the East of England investigating patient experience and acceptability of using the faecal immunochemical test in primary care.
OBJECTIVES: The faecal immunochemical test (FIT) is increasingly used in UK primary care to triage patients presenting with symptoms and at different levels of colorectal cancer risk. Evidence is scarce on patients' views of using FIT in this context. We aimed to explore patients' care experience and acceptability of using FIT in primary care. DESIGN: A qualitative semi-structured interview study. Interviews were conducted via Zoom between April and October 2020. Transcribed recordings were analysed using framework analysis. SETTING: East of England general practices. PARTICIPANTS: Consenting patients (aged ≥40 years) who presented in primary care with possible symptoms of colorectal cancer, and for whom a FIT was requested, were recruited to the FIT-East study. Participants were purposively sampled for this qualitative substudy based on age, gender and FIT result. RESULTS: 44 participants were interviewed with a mean age 61 years, and 25 (57%) being men: 8 (18%) received a positive FIT result. Three themes and seven subthemes were identified. Participants' familiarity with similar tests and perceived risk of cancer influenced test experience and acceptability. All participants were happy to do the FIT themselves and to recommend it to others. Most participants reported that the test was straightforward, although some considered it may be a challenge to others. However, test explanation by healthcare professionals was often limited. Furthermore, while some participants received their results quickly, many did not receive them at all with the common assumption that 'no news is good news'. For those with a negative result and persisting symptoms, there was uncertainty about any next steps. CONCLUSIONS: While FIT is acceptable to patients, elements of communication with patients by the healthcare system show potential for improvement. We suggest possible ways to improve the FIT experience, particularly regarding communication about the test and its results
Image processing techniques to identify predatory birds in aquacultural settings
Bird predation is a major problem in aquaculture. A novel method for dispersing birds is the use of a vehicle that can sense and chase birds. Image recognition software can improve their efficiency in chasing birds. Three recognition techniques were tested to identify birds 1) image morphology 2) artificial neural networks, and 3) template matching have been tested. A study was conducted on three species of birds 1) pelicans, 2) egrets, and 3) cormorants. Images were divided into 3 types 1) Type 1, 2) Type 2, and 3) Type 3 depending upon difficulty to separate from the others in the images. These types were clear, medium clear and unclear respectively. Image morphology resulted in 57.1% to 97.7%, 73.0% to 100%, and 46.1% to 95.5% correct classification rates (CCR) respectively on images of pelicans, cormorants and egrets before size thresholding. The artificial neural network model achieved 100% CCR while testing type 1 images and its classification success ranged from 63.5% to 70.0%, and 57.1% to 67.7% while testing type 2 and type 3 images respectively. The template matching algorithm succeeded in classifying 90%, 80%, and 60% of Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 images of pelicans and egrets. This technique recognized 80%, 91.7%, and 80% of Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 images of cormorants. We developed a real time recognition algorithm that could capture images from a camera, process them, and send output to the autonomous boat in regular intervals of time. Future research will focus on testing the recognition algorithms in natural or aquacultural settings on autonomous boats

Conveying the Impact of the Monteverde Community Fund
The goal of our project was to identify a long-term process that our sponsor, the Monteverde Community Fund (MCF), could use to inform potential donors and applicants on the fund\u27s impact. We distributed surveys, conducted interviews, and performed a social media analysis to gain insight into locals\u27 knowledge of the MCF. We recommended that the MCF highlight grant beneficiary projects on social media, leverage local voices in promotional material, run more youth programs, and implement new outreach strategies
