The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Review 2003
The 2003 Energy review, contains information about the 2003 energy situation of each of our member countries, regional data, as well as economic and social indicators corrected and extended through historical series. It presents and innovative structure for analysis that allows the reader to easily find general information on the energy sectors of the 26th OLADE Member Countries. With the objective of enriching the statistical value that the document has presented since initial editions, this document contains the participation of our Technical Coordinators in the each of our specialized areas of our Organization: Energy Policy, Hydrocarbons, Electricity, Statistical Information, Renewable Energy and Environment. It is likely to emphasize in this occasion, for the first time the Energy Report is spread into the immediate year subsequent to the one of reference, as it was obtained thanks to the effort of our specialists and the cooperation of our Countries Members. The modern world presents us with constant changes and challenges for the security of supply that sets dynamic integration within the strategic areas. In this sense, we expect that this document will be a useful tool to face the challenges of the Energy Sector of our Region.Energy, energy policy, hydrocarbons, natural gas, electricity, renewables, latin america, bolivia, argentina, chile, peru, uruguay, paraguay, brasil, ecuador, colombia, mexico, venezuela, costa rica, honduras, nicaragua, panamá, el salvador, guatemala, trinidad y tobago, jamaica, barbados, haiti, cuba

Market definition study of photovoltaic power for remote villages in developing countries
The potential market of photovoltaic systems in remote village applications in developing countries is assessed. It is indicated that photovoltaic technology is cost-competitive with diesel generators in many remote village applications. The major barriers to development of this market are the limited financial resources on the part of developing countries, and lack of awareness of photovoltaics as a viable option in rural electrification. A comprehensive information, education and demonstration program should be established as soon as possible to convince the potential customer countries and the various financial institutions of the viability of photovoltaics as an electricity option for developing countries

The Ecology and Sociology of the Mission-Aransas Estuary : An Estuarine and Watershed Profile
watershed profileThe Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) is one of 28 national estuarine reserves created to promote the responsible use and management of the nation's estuaries through a program combining scientific research, education, and stewardship. The purpose of this document is to provide researchers and resource managers with an adequate basis of knowledge to further development of scientific studies and applied management investigations. This document describes the different physical ecosystem components, ecological processes, habitats, and watersheds of the Reserve.
The Mission-Aransas NERR is a complex of wetland, terrestrial, and marine environments. The land is primarily coastal prairie with unique oak motte habitats. The wetlands include riparian habitat, and freshwater and salt water marshes. Within the water areas, the bays are large, open, and include extensive wind tidal flats, seagrass meadows, mangroves, and oyster reefs. This site profile describes each habitat by their location, type, distribution, abundance, current status and trends, issues of concerns, and future research plans.
Research within the Mission-Aransas NERR seeks to improve the understanding of the Texas coastal zone ecosystems structure and function. Current research includes: nutrient loading and transformation, estimates of community metabolism, water quality monitoring, freshwater inflow, climate change and fishery habitat. Harmful algal blooms, zooplankton, coliform bacteria, submerged aquatic vegetation, and marsh grass are monitored through the System- Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP). This document also describes the climate, hydrography and oceanography, geology, water quality, and endangered species within the Mission-AransasUniversity of Texas Marine Science InstituteMarine Scienc
