End-to-End Privacy for Open Big Data Markets
The idea of an open data market envisions the creation of a data trading
model to facilitate exchange of data between different parties in the Internet
of Things (IoT) domain. The data collected by IoT products and solutions are
expected to be traded in these markets. Data owners will collect data using IoT
products and solutions. Data consumers who are interested will negotiate with
the data owners to get access to such data. Data captured by IoT products will
allow data consumers to further understand the preferences and behaviours of
data owners and to generate additional business value using different
techniques ranging from waste reduction to personalized service offerings. In
open data markets, data consumers will be able to give back part of the
additional value generated to the data owners. However, privacy becomes a
significant issue when data that can be used to derive extremely personal
information is being traded. This paper discusses why privacy matters in the
IoT domain in general and especially in open data markets and surveys existing
privacy-preserving strategies and design techniques that can be used to
facilitate end to end privacy for open data markets. We also highlight some of
the major research challenges that need to be address in order to make the
vision of open data markets a reality through ensuring the privacy of

Designing the Health-related Internet of Things: Ethical Principles and Guidelines
The conjunction of wireless computing, ubiquitous Internet access, and the miniaturisation of sensors have opened the door for technological applications that can monitor health and well-being outside of formal healthcare systems. The health-related Internet of Things (H-IoT) increasingly plays a key role in health management by providing real-time tele-monitoring of patients, testing of treatments, actuation of medical devices, and fitness and well-being monitoring. Given its numerous applications and proposed benefits, adoption by medical and social care institutions and consumers may be rapid. However, a host of ethical concerns are also raised that must be addressed. The inherent sensitivity of health-related data being generated and latent risks of Internet-enabled devices pose serious challenges. Users, already in a vulnerable position as patients, face a seemingly impossible task to retain control over their data due to the scale, scope and complexity of systems that create, aggregate, and analyse personal health data. In response, the H-IoT must be designed to be technologically robust and scientifically reliable, while also remaining ethically responsible, trustworthy, and respectful of user rights and interests. These Walls Can Talk! Securing Digital Privacy in the Smart Home Under the Fourth Amendment
Privacy law in the United States has not kept pace with the realities of technological development, nor the growing reliance on the Internet of Things (IoT). As of now, the law has not adequately secured the “smart” home from intrusion by the state, and the Supreme Court further eroded digital privacy by conflating the common law concepts of trespass and exclusion in United States v. Jones. This article argues that the Court must correct this misstep by explicitly recognizing the method by which the Founding Fathers sought to “secure” houses and effects under the Fourth Amendment. Namely, the Court must reject its overly narrow trespass approach in lieu of the more appropriate right to exclude. This will better account for twenty-first century surveillance capabilities and properly constrain the state. Moreover, an exclusion framework will bolster the reasonable expectation of digital privacy by presuming an objective unreasonableness in any warrantless penetration by the state into the smart home
Evaluating the Contextual Integrity of Privacy Regulation: Parents' IoT Toy Privacy Norms Versus COPPA
Increased concern about data privacy has prompted new and updated data
protection regulations worldwide. However, there has been no rigorous way to
test whether the practices mandated by these regulations actually align with
the privacy norms of affected populations. Here, we demonstrate that surveys
based on the theory of contextual integrity provide a quantifiable and scalable
method for measuring the conformity of specific regulatory provisions to
privacy norms. We apply this method to the U.S. Children's Online Privacy
Protection Act (COPPA), surveying 195 parents and providing the first data that
COPPA's mandates generally align with parents' privacy expectations for
Internet-connected "smart" children's toys. Nevertheless, variations in the
acceptability of data collection across specific smart toys, information types,
parent ages, and other conditions emphasize the importance of detailed
contextual factors to privacy norms, which may not be adequately captured by

Improve the Sustainability of Internet of Things Through Trading-based Value Creation
Internet of Things (IoT) has been widely discussed over the past few years in
technology point of view. However, the social aspects of IoT are seldom studied
to date. In this paper, we discuss the IoT in social point of view.
Specifically, we examine the strategies to increase the adoption of IoT in a
sustainable manner. Such discussion is essential in today's context where
adoption of IoT solutions by non-technical community is slow. Specially, large
number of IoT solutions making their way into the market every day. We propose
an trading-based value creation model based on sensing as a service paradigm in
order to fuel the adoption of IoT. We discuss the value creation and its impact
towards the society especially to households and their occupants. We also
present results of two different surveys we conducted in order to examine the
