Instrument for determining coincidence and elapse time between independent sources of random sequential events
An instrument that receives pulses from a primary external source and one or more secondary external sources and determines when there is coincidence between the primary and one of the secondary sources is described. The instrument generates a finite time window (coincidence aperture) during which coincidence is defined to have occurred. The time intervals between coincidence apertures in which coincidences occur are measured
Cosmic-Ray Positrons: Are There Primary Sources?
Cosmic rays at the Earth include a secondary component originating in
collisions of primary particles with the diffuse interstellar gas. The
secondary cosmic rays are relatively rare but carry important information on
the Galactic propagation of the primary particles. The secondary component
includes a small fraction of antimatter particles, positrons and antiprotons.
In addition, positrons and antiprotons may also come from unusual sources and
possibly provide insight into new physics. For instance, the annihilation of
heavy supersymmetric dark matter particles within the Galactic halo could lead
to positrons or antiprotons with distinctive energy signatures. With the
High-Energy Antimatter Telescope (HEAT) balloon-borne instrument, we have
measured the abundances of positrons and electrons at energies between 1 and 50
GeV. The data suggest that indeed a small additional antimatter component may
be present that cannot be explained by a purely secondary production mechanism.

Poems for My Woofie The Story of Lt. Wilfred V. Michaud, 1st Parachute Battalion, 1st Marine Division
My senior capstone project is the creation of a book of investigative poetry. The subject of the work is my grandfather, Wilfred V. Michaud. He was a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. The poetry addresses the history of Michaud’s battalion and the battles it fought, as well as personal stories of Michaud’s life and experience in the service. Several secondary sources were used to gain historical context for the poetry. Additionally, primary sources were used to provide information about Michaud’s personal experiences. The combination of primary and secondary sources established the necessary background and inspiration for the project

Chasing the identification of ASCA Galactic Objects (ChIcAGO): An X-ray survey of unidentified sources in the galactic plane. I : Source sample and initial results
We present the Chasing the Identification of ASCA Galactic Objects (ChIcAGO) survey, which is designed to identify the unknown X-ray sources discovered during the ASCA Galactic Plane Survey (AGPS). Little is known about most of the AGPS sources, especially those that emit primarily in hard X-rays (2-10 keV) within the Fx 10-13 to 10-11 erg cm -2 s-1 X-ray flux range. In ChIcAGO, the subarcsecond localization capabilities of Chandra have been combined with a detailed multiwavelength follow-up program, with the ultimate goal of classifying the >100 unidentified sources in the AGPS. Overall to date, 93 unidentified AGPS sources have been observed with Chandra as part of the ChIcAGO survey. A total of 253 X-ray point sources have been detected in these Chandra observations within 3′ of the original ASCA positions. We have identified infrared and optical counterparts to the majority of these sources, using both new observations and catalogs from existing Galactic plane surveys. X-ray and infrared population statistics for the X-ray point sources detected in the Chandra observations reveal that the primary populations of Galactic plane X-ray sources that emit in the Fx 10-13 to 10-11 erg cm -2 s-1 flux range are active stellar coronae, massive stars with strong stellar winds that are possibly in colliding wind binaries, X-ray binaries, and magnetars. There is also another primary population that is still unidentified but, on the basis of its X-ray and infrared properties, likely comprises partly Galactic sources and partly active galactic nuclei.Peer reviewedSubmitted Versio
An Introduction to Gas Accretion onto Galaxies
Evidence for gas accretion onto galaxies can be found throughout the
universe. In this chapter, I summarize the direct and indirect signatures of
this process and discuss the primary sources. The evidence for gas accretion
includes the star formation rates and metallicities of galaxies, the evolution
of the cold gas content of the universe with time, numerous indirect indicators
for individual galaxies, and a few direct detections of inflow. The primary
sources of gas accretion are the intergalactic medium, satellite gas and
feedback material. There is support for each of these sources from observations
and simulations, but the methods with which the fuel ultimately settles in to

Bearing detection in the presence of two sources of varying coherence using the complex cepstrum
The effect of the presence of two acoustic sources (one, the primary, whose location is to be detected) of varying coherence on a cepstral bearing finding procedure is experimentally studied. The coherence between the acoustic sources was altered by adding random noise of various SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) to the input signal of the primary source; the same base signal being fed to both sources. The results demonstrate that, when block liftering is used, the primary source bearing is reliably estimated for coherences as low as gamma sup 2 greater than or approx equal to 0.5. The results also imply that background noise (unreflected) of SNR greater than or approx equal to 10 dB will not markedly affect the accuracy of the bearing estimation algorithm
