Averaged Iterative Water-Filling Algorithm: Robustness and Convergence

The convergence properties of the Iterative water-filling (IWF) based algorithms have been derived in the ideal situation where the transmitters in the network are able to obtain the exact value of the interference plus noise (IPN) experienced at the corresponding receivers in each iteration of the algorithm. However, these algorithms are not robust because they diverge when there is it time-varying estimation error of the IPN, a situation that arises in real communication system. In this correspondence, we propose an algorithm that possesses convergence guarantees in the presence of various forms of such time-varying error. Moreover, we also show by simulation that in scenarios where the interference is strong, the conventional IWF diverges while our proposed algorithm still converges

Spectrum scarcity demands thinking new ways to manage the distribution of radio frequency bands so that its use is more effective. The emerging technology that can enable this paradigm shift is the cognitive radio. Different models for organizing and managing cognitive radios have emerged, all with specific strategic purposes. In this article we review the allocation spectrum patterns of cognitive radio networks and analyse which are the common basis of each model. Design and Optimal Configuration of Full-Duplex MAC Protocol for Cognitive Radio Networks Considering Self-Interference

In this paper, we propose an adaptive Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for full-duplex (FD) cognitive radio networks in which FD secondary users (SUs) perform channel contention followed by concurrent spectrum sensing and transmission, and transmission only with maximum power in two different stages (called the FD sensing and transmission stages, respectively) in each contention and access cycle. The proposed FD cognitive MAC (FDC-MAC) protocol does not require synchronization among SUs and it efficiently utilizes the spectrum and mitigates the self-interference in the FD transceiver. We then develop a mathematical model to analyze the throughput performance of the FDC-MAC protocol where both half-duplex (HD) transmission (HDTx) and FD transmission (FDTx) modes are considered in the transmission stage. Then, we study the FDC-MAC configuration optimization through adaptively controlling the spectrum sensing duration and transmit power level in the FD sensing stage where we prove that there exists optimal sensing time and transmit power to achieve the maximum throughput and we develop an algorithm to configure the proposed FDC-MAC protocol. Extensive numerical results are presented to illustrate the characteristic of the optimal FDC-MAC configuration and the impacts of protocol parameters and the self-interference cancellation quality on the throughput performance. Moreover, we demonstrate the significant throughput gains of the FDC-MAC protocol with respect to existing half-duplex MAC (HD MAC) and single-stage FD MAC protocols.Comment: To Appear, IEEE Access, 201

Joint Resource Allocation and Power Control in Heterogeneous Cellular Networks for Smart Grids

The smart grid communication plays a pivotal role in coordinating energy generation, energy transmission, and energy distribution. Cellular technology with long-term evolution (LTE)-based standards has been a preference for smart grid communication networks. However, conventional cellular networks could suffer from radio access network (RAN) congestion when many smart grid devices attempt access simultaneously. Heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) are proposed as important techniques to solve this problem because HetNets can alleviate the RAN congestion by off-loading access attempt from a macrocell to small cells. In smart grid, real-time data from phasor measurement units (PMUs) has a stringent delay requirement in order to ensure the stability of the grid. In this paper, we propose a joint resource allocation and power control scheme to improve the end-to-end delay in HetNets by taking into account the simultaneous transmission of PMUs. We formulate the optimization problem as a mixed integer problem and adopt a game-theoretic approach and the best response dynamics algorithm to solve the problem. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly minimize the end-to-end delay compared to first-in first-out scheduling and round-robin scheduling schemes
