In this study, the creep performance of laser powder bed fusion manufactured Inconel 718 specimens is studied in detail and compared with conventional hot-rolled specimens alongside as-built then heat-treated and as-built then hot-isostatic pressed specimens. Hot-rolled specimens showed the best creep resistance, while the hot-isostatic pressed specimens yielded the worst performance, inferior to the as-built condition. Creep testing of all samples showed increased secondary creep rate was consistently correlated with a reduced life. Fractography revealed intergranular fracture was the primary failure mode for all as-built samples. Preferential intergranular precipitation in the case of the hot-isostatic pressed specimens during hot-isostatic pressing extensive intergranular cracking as the primary failure mechanism. Heat-treated specimens possessed only sparse intergranular precipitates, thereby explaining an improved creep lifetime. The hot-rolled specimens, having smallest grain size, showed the least extensive cracking, particularly in locations of finest grains, explaining avoidance of intergranular fracture as a key creep mechanism, thereby explaining the ductile creep fracture surfaces in the case of the hot-rolled samples

Post processing of multimedia information - concepts, problems, and techniques

Currently, most research work on multimedia information processing is focused on multimedia information storage and retrieval, especially indexing and content-based access of multimedia information. We consider multimedia information processing should include one more level-post-processing. Here "post-processing" means further processing of retrieved multimedia information, which includes fusion of multimedia information and reasoning with multimedia information to reach new conclusions. In this paper, the three levels of multimedia information processing storage, retrieval, and post-processing- are discussed. The concepts and problems of multimedia information post-processing are identified. Potential techniques that can be used in post-processing are suggested, By highlighting the problems in multimedia information post-processing, hopefully this paper will stimulate further research on this important but ignored topic.<br /

Post-processing of association rules.

In this paper, we situate and motivate the need for a post-processing phase to the association rule mining algorithm when plugged into the knowledge discovery in databases process. Major research effort has already been devoted to optimising the initially proposed mining algorithms. When it comes to effectively extrapolating the most interesting knowledge nuggets from the standard output of these algorithms, one is faced with an extreme challenge, since it is not uncommon to be confronted with a vast amount of association rules after running the algorithms. The sheer multitude of generated rules often clouds the perception of the interpreters. Rightful assessment of the usefulness of the generated output introduces the need to effectively deal with different forms of data redundancy and data being plainly uninteresting. In order to do so, we will give a tentative overview of some of the main post-processing tasks, taking into account the efforts that have already been reported in the literature.

BIGMAC : breaking inaccurate genomes and merging assembled contigs for long read metagenomic assembly.

BackgroundThe problem of de-novo assembly for metagenomes using only long reads is gaining attention. We study whether post-processing metagenomic assemblies with the original input long reads can result in quality improvement. Previous approaches have focused on pre-processing reads and optimizing assemblers. BIGMAC takes an alternative perspective to focus on the post-processing step.ResultsUsing both the assembled contigs and original long reads as input, BIGMAC first breaks the contigs at potentially mis-assembled locations and subsequently scaffolds contigs. Our experiments on metagenomes assembled from long reads show that BIGMAC can improve assembly quality by reducing the number of mis-assemblies while maintaining or increasing N50 and N75. Moreover, BIGMAC shows the largest N75 to number of mis-assemblies ratio on all tested datasets when compared to other post-processing tools.ConclusionsBIGMAC demonstrates the effectiveness of the post-processing approach in improving the quality of metagenomic assemblies
