    Geographic Information Systems in Archaeology: A Systematic Review

    GIS are an essential element in archaeology. Their use has become widespread for their potential to store, reference, analyse and visualise spatial information. Nonetheless, to the best of our knowledge, a systematic review of academic peer-reviewed publications related to the use of GIS, as a framework, in archaeology has never been presented before. Our goal in this work is to identify what has been published so far in relation to using GIS in archaeology within a small selected sample. We used the PRISMA guideline to perform a systematic review of 671 publications that we identified using the SCOPUS database and the keywords ‘GIS’ and ‘archaeology’. The collected publications were screened, analysed, and categorized into different relevant categories. Our analysis shows that GIS, in our selected sample, are mostly used for visualization and information management tasks. Moreover, spatial analysis studies were more common than other studies, and theoretical publications are scarce. The lack of a theoretical background in GIS may be the cause of some of the problems related to GIS applications in archaeology

    Towards Contingent World Descriptions in Description Logics

    The philosophical, logical, and terminological junctions between Description Logics (DLs) and Modal Logic (ML) are important because they can support the formal analysis of modal notions of ‘possibility’ and ‘necessity’ through the lens of DLs. This paper introduces functional contingents in order to (i) structurally and terminologically analyse ‘functional possibility’ and ‘functional necessity’ in DL world descriptions and (ii) logically and terminologically annotate DL world descriptions based on functional contingents. The most significant contributions of this research are the logical characterisation and terminological analysis of functional contingents in DL world descriptions. The ultimate goal is to investigate how modal operators can – logically and terminologically – be expressed within DL world descriptions

    Geographic ontology for major disasters: methodology and implementation

    During a catastrophic event, the International Charter1 "Space and Major Disasters" is regularly activated and provides the rescue teams damage maps prepared by a photo-interpreter team basing on pre and post-disaster satellite images. A satellite image manual processing must be accomplished in most cases to build these maps, a complex and demanding process. Given the importance of time in such critical situations, automatic or semiautomatic tools are highly recommended. Despite the quick treatment presented by automatic processing, it usually presents a semantic gap issue. Our aim is to express expert knowledge using a well-defined knowledge representation method: ontologies and make semantics explicit in geographic and remote sensing applications by taking the ontology advantages in knowledge representation, expression, and knowledge discovery. This research focuses on the design and implementation of a comprehensive geographic ontology in the case of major disasters, that we named GEO-MD, and illustrates its application in the case of Haiti 2010 earthquake. Results show how the ontology integration reduces the semantic gap and improves the automatic classification accuracy

    Poss-OWL 2: Possibilistic Extension of OWL 2 for an Uncertain Geographic Ontology

    AbstractThe use of ontologies to represent geographical knowledge has received a lot of attention recently. Nevertheless, classical ontol- ogy languages are not able to represent incomplete and uncertain knowledge, which are very important characteristics of several situations in geographic domain. Based on our previous work, we propose a solution for handling uncertainty and for dealing with inconsistency in geographical applications. In this paper, we present an extension of the OWL 2, named Poss-OWL 2, based on our Poss - SROIQ(D) description logic (DL). Then we describe some reflections about the inference system.
