ImpacT2 project: preliminary study 1: establishing the relationship between networked technology and attainment
This report explored teaching practices, beliefs and teaching styles and their influences on ICT use and implementation by pupils. Additional factors explored included the value of school and LEA policies and teacher competence in the use of ICT in classroom settings. ImpaCT2 was a major longitudinal study (1999-2002) involving 60 schools in England, its aims were to: identify the impact of networked technologies on the school and out-of-school environment; determine whether or not this impact affected the educational attainment of pupils aged 816 years (at Key Stages 2, 3, and 4); and provide information that would assist in the formation of national, local and school policies on the deployment of IC

Towards an ontology of networked learning
Networked learning, conceived of as networks of people, informational resources and technologies, constitutes what has been termed a âhighly interwinedâ technology. In this paper we develop our earlier argument that sociotechnical networks can form the basis for a non-determinist theory of learning technology.
Firstly, we argue that Kling et alâs sociotechnical interaction network (STIN) is compatible with a realist ontology, drawing on Fleetwoodâs âontology of the realâ and Lawsonâs proposition of the social nature of the artefact in networks of âpositioned practicesâ. This, we suggest, gives a more secure basis for the STIN concept, and provides a clear alternative to actor network theory (ANT)-based views of sociotechnical networks which do not distinguish between the influence of human and material agents. This also, we argue, provides an alternative way of anchoring concepts from the social informatics literature, often influenced by Giddensâ structuration theory, in ways that can help networked learning research.
Secondly, we explore some potential implications of such an approach for theories of networked learning and learning more widely. In particular, we suggest a possible ontology of elements of learning technology. The use of the word âlearningâ here is somewhat problematic, as it is routinely used rather loosely to describe changes at multiple levels but which are likely to have rather different underlying mechanisms. A more thorough ontology of learning technology would allow us to distinguish between these uses and identify potentially distinct mechanisms at play in different forms and levels of learning.
Thirdly, we use this approach to explore how viewing learning technologies as sociotechnical networks helps to clarify our thinking about identities in social networking for personal, learning and professional purposes
Towards Developing an Online Social Media-based Mobile Learning System

technologies on the web and mobile platform. During the last decade, the social media network became available for users to socialise
and collaborate among peer group. Hence, The integration of e-learning and social media using mobile device as access point is to allow
for learning and collaboration anytime, anywhere. This study seeks to provide learning on the social network platform for users to view
the application on a mobile device and also foster collaboration among scholars. The system was developed using an open source Content
Management System (CMS) Wordpress and Buddypress running on a WAMP or XAMPP server. MySQL was used as database. The
usability of the System on the different mobile devices used was evaluated by identifying the usability attributes; designing a
questionnaire based on those attributes and then analyzing the results with Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The results
showed that the learning system had a good usability score on mobile device
Maintaining, changing and crossing contexts: an activity theoretic reinterpretation of mobile learning
Although mobile learning is a popular topic in current research, it is not well conceptualized. Many researchers rely on underâtheorized conceptions of the topic, and those who have tried to refine the ideas involved have found this to be complex and difficult. In this paper a new interpretation of the concept âmobile learningâ is offered, drawing on the tradition of activity theory. The interpretation focuses on the continuity of learning activities that take place in multiple contexts, which are embodied as the combination of the physical and social setting of the learning activities. The paper starts by sketching the current research context and then outlines the theoretical tradition within which the interpretation of âmobile learningâ is located. Then the new interpretation is offered and the concepts are applied to case studies to illustrate how this new understanding develops current thinking in the area. The paper concludes by discussing the implications for research of adopting such a perspective

In the evolving landscape of mobile learning, European researchers have conducted significant mobile learning projects, representing a distinct perspective on mobile learning research and development. Our paper aims to explore how these projects have arisen, showing the driving forces of European innovation in mobile learning. We propose context as a central construct in mobile learning and examine theories of learning for the mobile world, based on physical, technological, conceptual, social and temporal mobility. We also examine the impacts of mobile learning research on educational practices and the implications for policy. Throughout, we identify lessons learnt from European experiences to date

Using activity-oriented design methods (AODM) to investigatemobile learning
The past few years have witnessed significant interest and developments in researching mobile learning, with a lot of important contributions being made towards understanding and defining mobile learning. However, current research efforts are being redirected towards a new agenda to establish appropriate methods for investigating mobile learning, as this book testifies. This chapter contributes to this research effort by articulating how to adapt Activity-Oriented Design Methods (AODM â see Mwanza, 2002) for use in mobile learning research

Landscape Study in Wireless and Mobile Learning in the post-16 sector
In the post-16 sector (further and higher education, and adult and community learning) there is a need to understand how wireless and mobile technologies can contribute to improving the student experience of learning, and help institutions fulfil their missions in an age of incomparably fast technological change. In the context of this interest and growing need, a Landscape Study project was commissioned by JISC through the Innovation strand of the JISC e-Learning Programme in 2004-5. Our project aims were to take a birds-eye view of developments and practice in the UK and internationally, and to communicate our findings to a broad and varied audience.
