Advancing transcriptome platforms
During the last decade of years, remarkable technological innovations have emerged that allow the direct or indirect determination of the transcriptome at unprecedented scale and speed. Studies using these methods have already altered our view of the extent and complexity of transcript profiling, which has advanced from one-gene-at-a-time to a holistic view of the genome. Here, we outline the major technical advances in transcriptome characterization, including the most popular used hybridization-based platform, the well accepted tag-based sequencing platform, and the recently developed RNA-Seq (RNA sequencing) based platform. Importantly, these next-generation technologies revolutionize assessing the entire transcriptome via the recent RNA-Seq technology

Debiasing Desire: Addressing Bias & Discrimination on Intimate Platforms
Designing technical systems to be resistant to bias and discrimination
represents vital new terrain for researchers, policymakers, and the
anti-discrimination project more broadly. We consider bias and discrimination
in the context of popular online dating and hookup platforms in the United
States, which we call intimate platforms. Drawing on work in
social-justice-oriented and Queer HCI, we review design features of popular
intimate platforms and their potential role in exacerbating or mitigating
interpersonal bias. We argue that focusing on platform design can reveal
opportunities to reshape troubling patterns of intimate contact without
overriding users' decisional autonomy. We identify and address the difficult
ethical questions that nevertheless come along with such intervention, while
urging the social computing community to engage more deeply with issues of
bias, discrimination, and exclusion in the study and design of intimate
platforms
Unmasking Hybridity in Popular Performance
This paper explores cultural hybridization in popular music and the eroticization of the exotic eastern aesthetic. Using musicology and anthropology as tools, the paper examines varying perspectives of the artists, audience and marginalized groups. Although cultural appropriation has been used recently as a blanket buzzword in mainstream dialogue, it does provide a platform to discuss complex issues on gender, race and sexuality that has been muddled by colonial mentalities
Mayall:a framework for desktop JavaScript auditing and post-exploitation analysis
Writing desktop applications in JavaScript offers developers the opportunity to write cross-platform applications with cutting edge capabilities. However in doing so, they are potentially submitting their code to a number of unsanctioned modifications from malicious actors. Electron is one such JavaScript application framework which facilitates this multi-platform out-the-box paradigm and is based upon the Node.js JavaScript runtime --- an increasingly popular server-side technology. In bringing this technology to the client-side environment, previously unrealized risks are exposed to users due to the powerful system programming interface that Node.js exposes. In a concerted effort to highlight previously unexposed risks in these rapidly expanding frameworks, this paper presents the Mayall Framework, an extensible toolkit aimed at JavaScript security auditing and post-exploitation analysis. The paper also exposes fifteen highly popular Electron applications and demonstrates that two thirds of applications were found to be using known vulnerable elements with high CVSS scores. Moreover, this paper discloses a wide-reaching and overlooked vulnerability within the Electron Framework which is a direct byproduct of shipping the runtime unaltered with each application, allowing malicious actors to modify source code and inject covert malware inside verified and signed applications without restriction. Finally, a number of injection vectors are explored and appropriate remediations are proposed
A Vindication of Responsible Parties
Electoral platform convergence is perceived unfavorably by both the popular press and many academic scholars. This paper provides a formal account of these perceived negative effects. We show that when parties do not know voters’ preferences perfectly, voters prefer some platform divergence to the convergent policy outcome of competition between opportunistic, office-motivated, parties. We characterize when voters prefer responsible parties (which weight policy positively in their utility function) to oppor- tunistic ones. Voters prefer responsible parties when office benefits and concentration of moderate voters are high enough relative to the ideological polarization between parties. In particular, with optimally-chosen office benefits, responsible parties improve welfare.
New Opportunities for Repositories in the Age of Altmetrics
For institutional repositories, alternative metrics reflecting online activity present valuable indicators of interest in their holdings that can supplement traditional usage statistics. A variable mix of built-in metrics is available through popular repository platforms: Digital Commons, DSpace and EPrints. These may include download counts at the collection and/or item level, search terms, total and unique visitors, page views and social media and bookmarking metrics; additional data may be available with special plug-ins. Data provide different types of information valuable for repository managers, university administrators and authors. They can reflect both scholarly and popular impact, show readership, reflect an institution's output, justify tenure and promotion and indicate direction for collection management. Practical considerations for implementing altmetrics include service costs, technical support, platform integration and user interest. Altmetrics should not be used for author ranking or comparison, and altmetrics sources should be regularly reevaluated for relevance
