Sex and Gender in the Library of Congress Subject Headings, 1988-2003

The problem of linguistic and structural bias in the subject vocabularies used by libraries has been the subject of varying degrees of scrutiny in the cataloging literature of the past several decades. This study examines the Library of Congress subject headings involving sex and gender from 1988, 1993, and 2003. Changes to the headings are tracked and analyzed. Comparisons are made between recommendations made in the literature and changes to the subject vocabulary; the impact of the changes on the appearance of bias on the basis of sex and gender in library catalogs is discussed

YÖK Tez No: 550574Çalışmamıza konu olan eser, İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi, Atatürk kitaplığı, Bel_Yz_K. 001565 numarada kayıtlı şiir mecmuasıdır. Karşılaştırmalı yöntemle incelediğimiz mecmua özellik itibariyle nazire mecmûasıdır. En güzele ulaşma kaygısının yanında, usta-çırak ilişkisinin ve üstada öykünmenin de bir ürünü olan nazire mecmuaları edebiyat tarihine kaynaklık etmenin yanında yazıldığı dönemin şiir zevkini kavramımıza da katkıda bulunmaktadır. Mecmua 127 varaktan ve üç bölümden oluşmaktadır. Mecmûanın ilk bölümü diye adlandırabileceğimiz 1a' dan 10a' ya (1a, 6a, 6b hariç bu varaklarda Türkçe nazire ve şiirler vardır.) Farsça İbn-i Nusret, Mes' udi, Hafız, Sabuhi, Hilali, Kişveri, Molla Cami, Hüsrev-i Dıhlevi, Hace Kemal' in Farsça şiirleri bulunmaktadır. 10a (10a' nın öncesi 6b' dedir.) ile başlayıp 85b' de son bulan ve çalışmamıza konu olan kısım ise 76 varaktır. 15. ve 16. yy şairlerinin Türkçe gazel ve nazirelerinden oluşmaktadır. Üçüncü bölümde değişik yüzyıllarda yaşamış şairlerin farklı nazım şekilleriyle yazılmış şiirleri bulunmaktadır. Çalışmamıza konu olan esas metni oluşturan 6b-85b (6b' nin devamı 10a' dadır.) varakları arasındaki şiirler, divanlar ve yayımlanmış bilimsel çalışmalardaki şiirlerle mukayese edilerek mevcut farklılıklar dipnotta gösterilmiştir. Karışık varaklar çoban kaydı takip edilerek bulunmuş, şiirlerin elif-ba sırası korunmuştur. Mecmuada şairi belirlenemeyen iki gazel ile birlikte 128 şaire ait toplam 487 gazel bulunmaktadır.The Mecmûa that is discussed in our study is a poetry Mecmûa registered as Bel_Yz_K. 001565 in İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi, Atatürk Library. This mecmûa that we have studied is " Nazire Mecmûa' ' in terms of its characteristics. Beyond reaching to " the most beautiful " Nazire Mecmûas, which are also products of master-apprentice relationship and emulation to the master, do not only present resources to history of literature but also contribute to the understanding of the taste of poetry of the era created. Mecmûa consists of 127 varak and 3 chapters. From 1a to 10a, except 1a, 6a, 6b as these parts are used for Turkish Nazire poems, there are the poetry of İbn-i Nusret, Mes' udi, Hafız, Subuhi, Hilali, Keşveri, Molla Cami, Hüsrev-i Dıhlevi, Hace Kemal in Persian. Our study, starting from 10a –preceded by 6b-and ending in 85b, mainly focuses on 76 foils (known as varak in Arabic) and consists of 15-th And 16-th Centuries' poets' Turkish Gazels and Nazires. In the third part we have poetry of various centuries' poets written in a variety of verse styles. The poems between Varaks (foils) 6b-85b (6b' s continuation is in 10a) which are the main focus of our study, have been compared with the poems previously released in Divans and scientific articles and the differences have been shows via footnotes. Various Varaks the poems traced through the recordings Shepherds have been preserved in their' elif-ba' order.
