    Production planning and control of closed-loop supply chains

    More and more supply chains emerge that include a return flow of materials. Many original equipment manufacturers are nowadays engaged in the remanufacturing business. In many process industries, production defectives and by-products are reworked. These closed-loop supply chains deserve special attention. Production planning and control in such hybrid systems is a real challenge, especially due to increased uncertainties. Even companies that are engaged in remanufacturing operations only, face more complicated planning situations than traditional manufacturing companies.We point out the main complicating characteristics in closed-loop systems with both remanufacturing and rework, and indicated the need for new or modified/extended production planning and control approaches. An overview of the existing scientific contributions is given.     An interactive product development model in remanufacturing environment: a chaos-based artificial bee colony approach

    This research presents an interactive product development model in re-manufacturing environment. The product development model defined a quantitative value model considering product design and development tasks and their value attributes responsible to describe functions of the product. At the last stage of the product development process, re-manufacturing feasibility of used components is incorporated. The consummate feature of this consideration lies in considering variability in cost, weight, and size of the constituted components depending on its types and physical states. Further, this research focuses on reverse logistics paradigm to drive environmental management and economic concerns of the manufacturing industry after the product launching and selling in the market. Moreover, the model is extended by integrating it with RFID technology. This RFID embedded model is aimed at analyzing the economical impact on the account of having advantage of a real time system with reduced inventory shrinkage, reduced processing time, reduced labor cost, process accuracy, and other directly measurable benefits. Consideration the computational complexity involved in product development process reverse logistics, this research proposes; Self-Guided Algorithms & Control (S-CAG) approach for the product development model, and Chaos-based Interactive Artificial Bee Colony (CI-ABC) approach for re-manufacturing model. Illustrative Examples has been presented to test the efficacy of the models. Numerical results from using the S-CAG and CI-ABC for optimal performance are presented and analyzed.     A new Silver-Meal based heuristic for the single-item dynamic lot sizing problem with returns and remanufacturing

    In a recent contribution, Teunter et al. [2006. Dynamic lot sizing with product returns and remanufacturing. IJPR 44 (20), 4377-4400] adapted three well-known heuristic approaches for the single-item dynamic lot sizing problem to incorporate returning products that can be remanufactured. The Silver-Meal based approach revealed in a large numerical study the best performance for the separate setup cost setting, i.e. the replenishment options remanufacturing and manufacturing are charged separately for each order. This contribution generalizes the Silver-Meal based heuristic by applying methods elaborated for the corresponding static problem and attaching two simple improvement steps. By doing this, the percentage gap to the optimal solution which has been used as a performance measure has been reduced to less than half of its initial value in almost all settings examined.

    Adaptive Multi-Priority Rule Approach To Control Agile Disassembly Systems In Remanufacturing

    End-of-Life (EOL) products in remanufacturing are prone to a high degree of uncertainty in terms of product quantity and quality. Therefore, the industrial shift towards a circular economy emphasizes the need for agile and hybrid disassembly systems. These systems feature a dynamic material flow. Besides that, they combine the endurance of robots with the dexterity of human operators for an effective and economically reasonable EOL-product treatment. Moreover, being reconfigurable, agile disassembly systems allow an alignment of their functional and quantitative capacity to volatile production programs. However, changes in both the system configuration and the production program to be processed call for adaptive approaches to production control. This paper proposes a multi-priority rule heuristic combined with an optimization tool for adaptive re-parameterization. First, domain-specific priority rules are introduced and incorporated into a weighted priority function for disassembly task allocation. Besides that, a novel metaheuristic parameter optimizer is devised to facilitate the adaption of weights in response to evolving requirements in a reasonable timeframe. Different metaheuristics such as simulated annealing or particle swarm optimization are incorporated as black-box optimizers. Subsequently, the performance of these metaheuristics is meticulously evaluated across six distinct test cases, employing discrete event simulation for evaluation, with a primary focus on measuring both speed and solution quality. To gauge the efficacy of the approach, a robust set of weights is employed as a benchmark. Encouragingly, the results of the experimentation reveal that the metaheuristics exhibit a notable proficiency in rapidly identifying high-quality solutions. The results are promising in that the metaheuristics can quickly find reasonable solutions, thus illustrating the compelling potential in enhancing the efficiency of agile disassembly systems

    A review of discrete-time optimization models for tactical production planning

The objective of this research is to identify streams and future research directions in this field based on the different classification criteria proposed. The major findings indicate that: (1) the most popular production-planning area is master production scheduling with a big-bucket time-type period; (2) most of the considered limited resources correspond to productive resources and, to a lesser extent, to inventory capacities; (3) the consideration of backlogs, set-up times, parallel machines, overtime capacities and network-type multisite configuration stand out in terms of extensions; (4) the most widely used modelling approach is linear/integer/mixed integer linear programming solved with exact algorithms, such as branch-and-bound, in commercial MIP solvers; (5) CPLEX, C and its variants and Lindo/Lingo are the most popular development tools among solvers, programming languages and modelling languages, respectively; (6) most works perform numerical experiments with random created instances, while a small number of works were validated by real-world data from industrial firms, of which the most popular are sawmills, wood and furniture, automobile and semiconductors and electronic devices.This study has been funded by the Universitat Politècnica de València projects: ‘Material Requirement Planning Fourth Generation (MRPIV)’ (Ref.
