    Intelligent environments aim to provide context-sensitive services to humans in the physical spaces in which they work and live. While the ethical dimensions of these systems have been considered, this is an aspect which requires further analysis. A literature review shows that these approaches are disconnected from each other, and that they are making little impact on real systems being built. This article provides a solution to both of these problems. It synthesises the ethical issues addressed by previous work and highlights other important concerns which have been overlooked so far. Furthermore, it proposes an alternative, more holistic approach that can be used to guide the development of intelligent environments. The validity of the framework is demonstrated by its integration into an actual project

    Of Atkins and Men: Deviations from Clinical Definitions of Mental Retardation in Death Penalty Cases

    Under Atkins v. Virginia, the Eighth Amendment exempts from execution individuals who meet the clinical definitions of mental retardation set forth by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and the American Psychiatric Association. Both define mental retardation as significantly subaverage intellectual functioning accompanied by significant limitations in adaptive functioning, originating before the age of 18. Since Atkins, most jurisdictions have adopted definitions of mental retardation that conform to those definitions. But some states, looking often to stereotypes of persons with mental retardation, apply exclusion criteria that deviate from and are more restrictive than the accepted scientific and clinical definitions. These state deviations have the effect of excluding from Atkins\u27s reach some individuals who plainly fall within the class it protects. This article focuses on the cases of Roger Cherry, Jeffrey Williams, Michael Stallings and others, who represent an ever-growing number of individuals inappropriately excluded from Atkins. Left unaddressed, the state deviations discussed herein permit what Atkins does not: the death-sentencing and execution of some capital defendants who have mental retardation

    Access to schooling spaces for my child with Down Syndrome : an autoethnography.

University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 2014.As part of the Indian diaspora whose ancestors were indentured labourers brought to South Africa to work in the sugar plantation (Mishra, 1996) with little scope for education, I repeatedly heard the expression ‘the only way to escape poverty is through education’ from my grandparents and parents. The access I had to schooling, and the opportunity to complete, provided me with a passport to tertiary education, a privilege only a few of my siblings had. The importance of education was instilled in me from my childhood and it was a natural expectation when I became a parent, to want access to good quality education for my own children. My pursuit of access to schools for my daughter with Down syndrome was an immense challenge with no guarantees in the South African context. I have undertaken this study to reflect on nearly fifteen years of formal and informal schooling for my daughter, Tiara. In an effort to purposefully engage the reader on the subject of schooling spaces and access to it, I considered autoethnography most suitable for the task. It offers me the scope of using personal experiences as principal data and the latitude to express those experiences in a mosaic format by intersecting and sometimes collapsing it with those of others. These ‘others’ consisting of four women, are part of a community of practice, and predominantly parents of children with Down syndrome who interact within my social space. This allowed a wider interpretation of my experiences in relation to others. Their cameos which emerged from semi structured interviews conducted at a time and place at their convenience are captured alongside mine as episodic nodal moments. In choosing autoethnography as the methodology, greater consideration was given to the issue of ethics to ensure confidentiality and respect of all informants. Three of the informants each have a child with Down syndrome. The fourth informant is an academic who is a prolific researcher in the field of Inclusive Education. Her input is from a dual perspective of having a sibling with disability and being a key role-player in the crafting of policies pertaining to inclusive education in South Africa. These reflective accounts were excavated predominantly through qualitative method of memory work. While memory-work is broadly recognized as a profoundly felt emotional experience, it is first and foremost a research tool (Cadman, Friend, Gammon, Ingleton, Koutroulis, McCormack, Mitchell, Onyx, O’Regan, Rocco & Small., 2001). Memory work entailed chronicling past events in as much detail as possible with occasional stimuli to trigger recall. A coalescing of all chronicles and cameo accounts pertaining to access to schooling spaces for children with Down syndrome is followed by thematic analysis. This is discussed in a mosaic format with all chronicles and cameos interwoven. A created multidimensional model of access, influenced by Nind and Seale (2010) helped unpack the enabling and disenabling aspects of experiences of accessing schooling spaces for children with Down syndrome. This is done to shed insight on the state of South African segregated schooling in public education, in both mainstream and special needs and the challenging experiences of access to inclusive schooling spaces for children with Down syndrome. The data suggests that despite enabling legislation, implementation of inclusive policies reflects gaps, primarily in lack of political will and sustained effort. Physical access into a school did not necessarily mean that Tiara had enabling access to and meaningful participation in the spectrum of schooling experiences: systemic, curricular, social, pedagogical, spaces and practices. Parental advocacy has historically contributed to the evolution from medical deficit model to social justice but the need for endurance to continue the fight for accessible inclusive spaces continues to be unyielding

    Understanding the use of tablet devices in the classroom when teaching a group of learners diagnosed with autism

    The increasing number of individuals diagnosed with autism, the shift in educational paradigms, and technology advances that allow affordability and accessibility were the motivation behind this study. Learners with autism have the potential to develop social and emotional skills as well as increasing motivation for learning while using technology, in particular tablet devices (i.e., iPads) as instructional tools. The purpose of this case study was to better understand the use of technology (in particular, tablet devices) to teach mathematics to a group of learners diagnosed with autism. Two research questions guided this study: (1) How do the motivational principles of the ARCS model impact the learners\u27 motivation with classroom activities (i.e., with excitement? apathy? sense of accomplishment)?; and (2) How do learners interact with technology used in the classroom (i.e., as an instructional tool? as a rewarding mechanism? as an entertaining strategy)? Moreover, the hope is to potentially gain more awareness into the motivational impact tablet devices can have on learners on the autism spectrum concerning engagement and participation in learning activities. Participants in this study were five children diagnosed with autism between the ages of 8 and 11 who attended a middle school located at a large school district in a metropolitan area of a U.S. Midwestern state. The learners participated in a paper-based mathematics activity as well as interacted with an iPad to work on mathematics concepts. Observations and opportunistic interviews with learners and teacher were conducted. An in-depth semi-structured interview was also done with the classroom teacher. In attempt to explore the research questions, data were analyzed using the Interpretive Descriptive qualitative research analysis method. Based on that analysis four themes emerged: (1) the motivational use of the tablet device in the classroom, (2) the classroom activities\u27 impact on learners\u27 social interactions, (3) learners\u27 behavioral changes resulting from change in classroom routine, and (4) teacher\u27s motivational strategy. The overall study provided an understanding of the motivational impact tablet devices potentially have on learners on the autism spectrum concerning engagement and participation in learning activities. The impact of technology was contingent on its strategic instructional or reward mechanism implementation in the curriculum. The study revealed that technology in general and tablet devices in particular are used in the classroom as reward mechanisms and entertaining strategies to seize and retain the learners\u27 attention in order to achieve instructional goals. The findings also revealed how the learners\u27 conceptual levels affect their response to the reward and influence their social behavioral skills that could become uncontrollable. Additionally, the findings raised awareness concerning the learners\u27reactions to the change in their daily structured schedule and revealed some practices to manage learners\u27 behaviors
