    New applications for phosphoric acid fuel cells

    New applications for phosphoric acid fuel cells were identified and evaluated. Candidates considered included all possibilities except grid connected electric utility applications, on site total energy systems, industrial cogeneration, opportunistic use of waste hydrogen, space and military applications, and applications smaller than 10 kW. Applications identified were screened, with the most promising subjected to technical and economic evaluation using a fuel cell and conventional power system data base developed in the study. The most promising applications appear to be the underground mine locomotive and the railroad locomotive. Also interesting are power for robotic submersibles and Arctic villages. The mine locomotive is particularly attractive since it is expected that the fuel cell could command a very high price and still be competitive with the conventionally used battery system. The railroad locomotive's attractiveness results from the (smaller) premium price which the fuel cell could command over the conventional diesel electric system based on its superior fuel efficiency, and on the large size of this market and the accompanying opportunities for manufacturing economy

    RRS Discovery Cruise 381, 28 Aug - 03 Oct 2012. Ocean Surface Mixing, Ocean Submesoscale Interaction Study (OSMOSIS)

    Cruise D381 was made in support of NERC's Ocean Surface Boundary Layer theme action programme, OSMOSIS (Ocean Surface Mixing, Ocean Sub-mesoscale Interaction Study). The ocean surface boundary layer (OSBL) deepens in response to convective, wind and surface wave forcing, which produce three-dimensional turbulence that entrains denser water, deepening the layer. The OSBL shoals in response to solar heating and to mesoscale and sub-mesoscale motions that adjust lateral buoyancy gradients into vertical stratification. Recent and ongoing work is revolutionising our view of both the deepening and shoaling processes: new processes are coming into focus that are not currently recognised in model parameterisation schemes. In OSMOSIS we have a project which integrates observations, modelling studies and parameterisation development to deliver a step change in modelling of the OSBL. The OSMOSIS overall aim is to develop new, physically based and observationally supported, parameterisations of processes that deepen and shoal the OSBL, and to implement and evaluate these parameterisations in a state-of-the-art global coupled climate model, facilitating improved weather and climate predictions. Cruise D381 was split into two legs D381A and a process study cruise D381B. D381A partly deployed the OSMOSIS mooring array and two gliders for long term observations near the Porcupine Abyssal Plain Observatory. D381B firstly completed mooring and glider deployment work begun during the preceding D381A cruise. D381B then carried out several days of targetted turbulence profiling looking at changes in turbulent energy dissipation resulting from the interation of upper ocean fluid structures such as eddies, sub-mesoscale filaments and Langmuir cells with surface wind and current shear. Finally D381B conducted two spatial surveys with the towed SeaSoar vehicle to map and diagnose the mesoscale and sub-mesoscale flows, which, unusually, are the `large scale' background in which this study sits

    Quantifying health impacts of traffic-related fine particulate air pollution at the urban project scale

    Public health practitioners in the United States are increasingly advocating the use of formal health impact assessments (HIAs) to inform local decision-makers of adverse health consequences of local urban and transportation planning decisions. Yet only 5 of 70 transportation-related HIAs conducted in the United States between 1999 and 2013 quantified health impacts of the decisions under consideration. Furthermore, none of these quantitative HIAs accounted for variability and uncertainty; rather, each provided a single, deterministic estimate of health risks. This research aims to expand the evidence and tools available for quantitative HIAs of traffic-related fine particulate matter air pollution (denoted as PM2.5) at the urban project scale. The research objectives are to (1) develop and empirically validate an improved approach for characterizing variability and uncertainty in local population exposure to near-roadway PM2.5 under alternative future traffic scenarios, (2) determine the extent to which including variability and uncertainty in an HIA affects HIA results, and (3) develop a simplified method for quantifying traffic-related PM2.5 health impacts that can include variability and uncertainty but also ease the quantitative burden for HIA practitioners. The methods in this research are demonstrated using a case study roadway corridor in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where a future extension to the University of North Carolina campus is predicted to increase local traffic volumes. Key findings of this research include that (1) air quality model prediction error appears to have a greater effect on estimated near-roadway seasonal daily average PM2.5 concentrations than hourly meteorological variability, (2) the current deterministic HIA approach may under-estimate health impacts, and (3) a simplified parametric approach for HIA may estimate transportation-related health impacts sufficiently for conservative, screening-level analysis, saving the time and costs of more complex modeling for situations in which the screening analysis shows risks may exceed a pre-determined threshold of acceptability.Doctor of Philosoph
