Adaptive multi-channel MAC protocol for dense VANET with directional antennas
Directional antennas in Ad hoc networks offer more benefits than the traditional antennas with omni-directional mode. With directional antennas, it can increase the spatial reuse of the wireless channel. A higher gain of directional antennas makes terminals a further transmission range and fewer hops to the destination. This paper presents the design, implementation and simulation results of a multi-channel Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for dense Vehicular Ad hoc Networks using directional antennas with local beam tables. Numeric results show that our protocol performs better than the existing multichannel protocols in vehicular environment
A Taxonomy for Congestion Control Algorithms in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks
One of the main criteria in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) that has
attracted the researchers' consideration is congestion control. Accordingly,
many algorithms have been proposed to alleviate the congestion problem,
although it is hard to find an appropriate algorithm for applications and
safety messages among them. Safety messages encompass beacons and event-driven
messages. Delay and reliability are essential requirements for event-driven
messages. In crowded networks where beacon messages are broadcasted at a high
number of frequencies by many vehicles, the Control Channel (CCH), which used
for beacons sending, will be easily congested. On the other hand, to guarantee
the reliability and timely delivery of event-driven messages, having a
congestion free control channel is a necessity. Thus, consideration of this
study is given to find a solution for the congestion problem in VANETs by
taking a comprehensive look at the existent congestion control algorithms. In
addition, the taxonomy for congestion control algorithms in VANETs is presented
based on three classes, namely, proactive, reactive and hybrid. Finally, we
have found the criteria in which fulfill prerequisite of a good congestion
control algorithm
Evaluating the Impact of Transmission Range on the Performance of VANET
Recently, interest in the field of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) has grown among research community to improve traffic safety and efficiency on the roads. Despite the many advantages, the transmission range in vehicular network remains one of the major challenges due to the unique characteristics of VANETs such as various communication environments, highly dynamic topology, high node mobility and traffic density. The network would suffer from a broadcast-storm in high vehicular density when a fixed transmission range in VANET is used, while in sparse vehicular density the network could be disconnected frequently. In this paper, we evaluated the impact of different transmission ranges and number of flows formed between vehicles in a highway scenario using AODV as routing protocol. In order to validate the simulation of VANET, traffic and network simulators (SUMO & NS-2) have been used. The performance was evaluated in terms of packet delivery ratio and end-to-end delay. The simulation results have shown that better performance was achieved in term of higher PDR and lower end-to-end delay for less than 500 meters transmission range. On the contrary, the PDR started to decrease and end-to-end delay increased when the transmission range exceeded 500 meters. The performance degraded as the number of flows increased

Intelligent and bandwidth-efficient medium access control protocols for IEEE 802.11p-based Vehicular Ad hoc Networks
Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) technology aims to enable safer and more sophisticated transportation via the spontaneous formation of Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs). This type of wireless networks allows the exchange of kinematic and other data among vehicles, for the primary purpose of safer and more efficient driving, as well as efficient traffic management and other third-party services. Their infrastructure-less, unbounded nature allows the formation of dense networks that present a channel sharing issue, which is harder to tackle than in conventional WLANs.
This thesis focuses on optimising channel access strategies, which is important for the efficient usage of the available wireless bandwidth and the successful deployment of VANETs. To start with, the default channel access control method for V2V is evaluated hardware via modifying the appropriate wireless interface Linux driver to enable finer on-the-fly control of IEEE 802.11p access control layer parameters. More complex channel sharing scenarios are evaluated via simulations and findings on the behaviour of the access control mechanism are presented. A complete channel sharing efficiency assessment is conducted, including throughput, fairness and latency measurements. A new IEEE 802.11p-compatible Q-Learning-based access control approach that improves upon the studied protocol is presented. The stations feature algorithms that “learn” how to act optimally in VANETs in order to maximise their achieved packet delivery and minimise bandwidth wastage. The feasibility of Q-Learning to be used as the base of selflearning protocols for IEEE 802.11p-based V2V communication access control in dense environments is investigated in terms of parameter tuning, necessary time of exploration, achieving latency requirements, scaling, multi-hop and accommodation of simultaneous applications. Additionally, the novel Collection Contention Estimation (CCE) mechanism for Q-Learning-based access control is presented. By embedding it on the Q-Learning agents, faster convergence, higher throughput, better service separation and short-term fairness are achieved in simulated network deployments.
The acquired new insights on the network performance of the proposed algorithms can provide precise guidelines for efficient designs of practical, reliable, fair and ultra-low latency V2V communication systems for dense topologies. These results can potentially have an impact across a range of related areas, including various types of wireless networks and resource allocation for these, network protocol and transceiver design as well as QLearning applicability and considerations for correct use
