    Branch Prediction For Network Processors

    Originally designed to favour flexibility over packet processing performance, the future of the programmable network processor is challenged by the need to meet both increasing line rate as well as providing additional processing capabilities. To meet these requirements, trends within networking research has tended to focus on techniques such as offloading computation intensive tasks to dedicated hardware logic or through increased parallelism. While parallelism retains flexibility, challenges such as load-balancing limit its scope. On the other hand, hardware offloading allows complex algorithms to be implemented at high speed but sacrifice flexibility. To this end, the work in this thesis is focused on a more fundamental aspect of a network processor, the data-plane processing engine. Performing both system modelling and analysis of packet processing functions; the goal of this thesis is to identify and extract salient information regarding the performance of multi-processor workloads. Following on from a traditional software based analysis of programme workloads, we develop a method of modelling and analysing hardware accelerators when applied to network processors. Using this quantitative information, this thesis proposes an architecture which allows deeply pipelined micro-architectures to be implemented on the data-plane while reducing the branch penalty associated with these architectures

    A Survey on the Contributions of Software-Defined Networking to Traffic Engineering

    Since the appearance of OpenFlow back in 2008, software-defined networking (SDN) has gained momentum. Although there are some discrepancies between the standards developing organizations working with SDN about what SDN is and how it is defined, they all outline traffic engineering (TE) as a key application. One of the most common objectives of TE is the congestion minimization, where techniques such as traffic splitting among multiple paths or advanced reservation systems are used. In such a scenario, this manuscript surveys the role of a comprehensive list of SDN protocols in TE solutions, in order to assess how these protocols can benefit TE. The SDN protocols have been categorized using the SDN architecture proposed by the open networking foundation, which differentiates among data-controller plane interfaces, application-controller plane interfaces, and management interfaces, in order to state how the interface type in which they operate influences TE. In addition, the impact of the SDN protocols on TE has been evaluated by comparing them with the path computation element (PCE)-based architecture. The PCE-based architecture has been selected to measure the impact of SDN on TE because it is the most novel TE architecture until the date, and because it already defines a set of metrics to measure the performance of TE solutions.     SatCat5: A Low-Power, Mixed-Media Ethernet Network for Smallsats

    In any satellite, internal bus and payload systems must exchange a variety of command, control, telemetry, and mission-data. In too many cases, the resulting network is an ad-hoc proliferation of complex, dissimilar protocols with incomplete system-to-system connectivity. While standards like CAN, MIL-STD-1553, and SpaceWire mitigate this problem, none can simultaneously solve the need for high throughput and low power consumption. We present a new solution that uses Ethernet framing and addressing to unify a mixed-media network. Low-speed nodes (0.1-10 Mbps) use simple interfaces such as SPI and UART to communicate with extremely low power and minimal complexity. High-speed nodes use so-called “media-independent” interfaces such as RMII, RGMII, and SGMII to communicate at rates up to 1000 Mbps and enable connection to traditional COTS network equipment. All are interconnected into a single smallsat-area-network using a Layer-2 network switch, with mixed-media support for all these interfaces on a single network. The result is fast, easy, and flexible communication between any two subsystems. SatCat5 is presented as a free and open-source reference implementation of this mixed-media network switch, with power consumption of 0.2-0.7W depending on network activity. Further discussion includes example protocols that can be used on such networks, leveraging IPv4 when suitable but also enabling full-featured communication without the need for a complex protocol stack

    Robust and Listening-Efficient Contention Resolution

    This paper shows how to achieve contention resolution on a shared communication channel using only a small number of channel accesses -- both for listening and sending -- and the resulting algorithm is resistant to adversarial noise. The shared channel operates over a sequence of synchronized time slots, and in any slot agents may attempt to broadcast a packet. An agent's broadcast succeeds if no other agent broadcasts during that slot. If two or more agents broadcast in the same slot, then the broadcasts collide and both broadcasts fail. An agent listening on the channel during a slot receives ternary feedback, learning whether that slot had silence, a successful broadcast, or a collision. Agents are (adversarially) injected into the system over time. The goal is to coordinate the agents so that each is able to successfully broadcast its packet. A contention-resolution protocol is measured both in terms of its throughput and the number of slots during which an agent broadcasts or listens. Most prior work assumes that listening is free and only tries to minimize the number of broadcasts. This paper answers two foundational questions. First, is constant throughput achievable when using polylogarithmic channel accesses per agent, both for listening and broadcasting? Second, is constant throughput still achievable when an adversary jams some slots by broadcasting noise in them? Specifically, for NN packets arriving over time and JJ jammed slots, we give an algorithm that with high probability in N+JN+J guarantees Θ(1)\Theta(1) throughput and achieves on average O(polylog(N+J))O(\texttt{polylog}(N+J)) channel accesses against an adaptive adversary. We also have per-agent high-probability guarantees on the number of channel accesses -- either O(polylog(N+J))O(\texttt{polylog}(N+J)) or O((J+1)polylog(N))O((J+1) \texttt{polylog}(N)), depending on how quickly the adversary can react to what is being broadcast
