    The redressing the gender imbalance in the UK construction industry has been emphasised on numerous occasions and many researchers have identified that women can contribute in an immense way towards the construction industry development. However, construction industry has failed to attract and retain women who are interested in a construction career. Participation of women is still very low in some parts of the industry, in particular, at a time when skilled people at all levels of the industry are in demand. Further, Training and Development (T&D) activities have been identified as one of the vital element for professional women’s career advancement in the construction industry. However, most of the concepts related to competitive advantages of T&D on professional women’s career advancement are imprecise and unstructured in the construction industry. There is little evidence of an accepted theoretical framework for applying the ideas and there is even less in the way of empirical evidence concerning the validity and utility of these concepts. This paper presents the how much/how little impact T&D has on women’s career advancement. This paper is based on data collected from professional women in the UK construction industry

    Negation, 'presupposition' and the semantics/pragmatics distinction

    A cognitive pragmatic approach is taken to some long-standing problem cases of negation, the so-called presupposition denial cases. It is argued that a full account of the processes and levels of representation involved in their interpretation typically requires the sequential pragmatic derivation of two different propositions expressed. The first is one in which the presupposition is preserved and, following the rejection of this, the second involves the echoic (metalinguistic) use of material falling in the scope of the negation. The semantic base for these processes is the standard anti-presuppositionalist wide-scope negation. A different view, developed by Burton-Roberts (1989a, b), takes presupposition to be a semantic relation encoded in natural language and so argues for a negation operator that does not cancel presuppositions. This view is shown to be flawed, in that it makes the false prediction that presupposition denial cases are semantic contradictions and it is based on too narrow a view of the role of pragmatic inferencing

    Juan de Fuca subduction zone from a mixture of tomography and waveform modeling

    Seismic tomography images of the upper mantle structures beneath the Pacific Northwestern United States display a maze of high-velocity anomalies, many of which produce distorted waveforms evident in the USArray observations indicative of the Juan de Fuca (JdF) slab. The inferred location of the slab agrees quite well with existing contour lines defining the slab's upper interface. Synthetic waveforms generated from a recent tomography image fit teleseismic travel times quite well and also some of the waveform distortions. Regional earthquake data, however, require substantial changes to the tomographic velocities. By modeling regional waveforms of the 2008 Nevada earthquake, we find that the uppermost mantle of the 1D reference model AK135, the reference velocity model used for most tomographic studies, is too fast for the western United States. Here, we replace AK135 with mT7, a modification of an older Basin-and-Range model T7. We present two hybrid velocity structures satisfying the waveform data based on modified tomographic images and conventional slab wisdom. We derive P and SH velocity structures down to 660 km along two cross sections through the JdF slab. Our results indicate that the JdF slab is subducted to a depth of 250 km beneath the Seattle region, and terminates at a shallower depth beneath Portland region of Oregon to the south. The slab is about 60 km thick and has a P velocity increase of 5% with respect to mT7. In order to fit waveform complexities of teleseismic Gulf of Mexico and South American events, a slab-like high-velocity anomaly with velocity increases of 3% for P and 7% for SH is inferred just above the 660 discontinuity beneath Nevada

    The influence of the Amalgamated Metal Worker's Union (AMWU) on the New Zealand Engineer's Union (NZEU) with respect to the education and training reforms between 1987 and 1992

    In the 1980s the AMWU influenced the NZEU with respect to education and training. The purpose of this study was to investigate the specific details of this relationship. It involved an extensive review of government policy documents and union literature. The study also involved twenty-three interviews in Australia and New Zealand. The findings confirmed and enhanced the previous observations about the influence of the AMWU. Not only did they identify in more depth the nature of the trans-Tasman influence; they also identified important similarities and differences between the contexts in which the two unions were operating. Specifically, the study found that whereas the AMWU had a long history and could be identified as pro-active; the NZEU came to education and training reform in response to labour market deregulation

We focus on transportation networks to develop our methodologies since it is a prime example of a cyber-physical system that is characterized by distributed decision-making and is prone to unexpected disruptions. This new simulator investigates the route choice behavior of cars in an urban environment. It allows subjects to participate as drivers in virtual city environments directly as well as artificial intelligence algorithms. It provides a platform for experimentation with various incentive mechanisms and information dissemination protocols that are critical for emergency planning during disruptions.by Amrik S.
