A Coverage Monitoring algorithm based on Learning Automata for Wireless Sensor Networks
To cover a set of targets with known locations within an area with limited or
prohibited ground access using a wireless sensor network, one approach is to
deploy the sensors remotely, from an aircraft. In this approach, the lack of
precise sensor placement is compensated by redundant de-ployment of sensor
nodes. This redundancy can also be used for extending the lifetime of the
network, if a proper scheduling mechanism is available for scheduling the
active and sleep times of sensor nodes in such a way that each node is in
active mode only if it is required to. In this pa-per, we propose an efficient
scheduling method based on learning automata and we called it LAML, in which
each node is equipped with a learning automaton, which helps the node to select
its proper state (active or sleep), at any given time. To study the performance
of the proposed method, computer simulations are conducted. Results of these
simulations show that the pro-posed scheduling method can better prolong the
lifetime of the network in comparison to similar existing method
Scheduling for Multi-Camera Surveillance in LTE Networks
Wireless surveillance in cellular networks has become increasingly important,
while commercial LTE surveillance cameras are also available nowadays.
Nevertheless, most scheduling algorithms in the literature are throughput,
fairness, or profit-based approaches, which are not suitable for wireless
surveillance. In this paper, therefore, we explore the resource allocation
problem for a multi-camera surveillance system in 3GPP Long Term Evolution
(LTE) uplink (UL) networks. We minimize the number of allocated resource blocks
(RBs) while guaranteeing the coverage requirement for surveillance systems in
LTE UL networks. Specifically, we formulate the Camera Set Resource Allocation
Problem (CSRAP) and prove that the problem is NP-Hard. We then propose an
Integer Linear Programming formulation for general cases to find the optimal
solution. Moreover, we present a baseline algorithm and devise an approximation
algorithm to solve the problem. Simulation results based on a real surveillance
map and synthetic datasets manifest that the number of allocated RBs can be
effectively reduced compared to the existing approach for LTE networks.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited
devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within
an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness
in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost,
WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology
formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object
detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make
optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design
goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process
(MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms
and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and
compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs
Self-Adaptive resource allocation for event monitoring with uncertainty in Sensor Networks
Event monitoring is an important application of sensor networks. Multiple parties, with different surveillance targets, can share the same network, with limited sensing resources, to monitor their events of interest simultaneously.
Such a system achieves profit by allocating sensing resources to missions to collect event related information (e.g., videos, photos, electromagnetic signals). We address the problem of dynamically
assigning resources to missions so as to achieve maximum profit with uncertainty in event occurrence. We consider timevarying resource demands and profits, and multiple concurrent surveillance missions. We model each mission as a sequence of monitoring attempts, each being allocated with a certain amount of resources, on a specific set of events that occurs as a
Markov process. We propose a Self-Adaptive Resource Allocation algorithm (SARA) to adaptively and efficiently allocate resources according to the results of previous observations. By means of simulations we compare SARA to previous solutions and show SARA’s potential in finding higher profit in both static and dynamic scenarios
Coverage and Connectivity in Three-Dimensional Networks
Most wireless terrestrial networks are designed based on the assumption that
the nodes are deployed on a two-dimensional (2D) plane. However, this 2D
assumption is not valid in underwater, atmospheric, or space communications. In
fact, recent interest in underwater acoustic ad hoc and sensor networks hints
at the need to understand how to design networks in 3D. Unfortunately, the
design of 3D networks is surprisingly more difficult than the design of 2D
networks. For example, proofs of Kelvin's conjecture and Kepler's conjecture
required centuries of research to achieve breakthroughs, whereas their 2D
counterparts are trivial to solve. In this paper, we consider the coverage and
connectivity issues of 3D networks, where the goal is to find a node placement
strategy with 100% sensing coverage of a 3D space, while minimizing the number
of nodes required for surveillance. Our results indicate that the use of the
Voronoi tessellation of 3D space to create truncated octahedral cells results
in the best strategy. In this truncated octahedron placement strategy, the
transmission range must be at least 1.7889 times the sensing range in order to
maintain connectivity among nodes. If the transmission range is between 1.4142
and 1.7889 times the sensing range, then a hexagonal prism placement strategy
or a rhombic dodecahedron placement strategy should be used. Although the
required number of nodes in the hexagonal prism and the rhombic dodecahedron
placement strategies is the same, this number is 43.25% higher than the number
of nodes required by the truncated octahedron placement strategy. We verify by
simulation that our placement strategies indeed guarantee ubiquitous coverage.
We believe that our approach and our results presented in this paper could be

Coverage and Field Estimation on Bounded Domains by Diffusive Swarms
In this paper, we consider stochastic coverage of bounded domains by a
diffusing swarm of robots that take local measurements of an underlying scalar
field. We introduce three control methodologies with diffusion, advection, and
reaction as independent control inputs. We analyze the diffusion-based control
strategy using standard operator semigroup-theoretic arguments. We show that
the diffusion coefficient can be chosen to be dependent only on the robots'
local measurements to ensure that the swarm density converges to a function
proportional to the scalar field. The boundedness of the domain precludes the
need to impose assumptions on decaying properties of the scalar field at
infinity. Moreover, exponential convergence of the swarm density to the
equilibrium follows from properties of the spectrum of the semigroup generator.
In addition, we use the proposed coverage method to construct a
time-inhomogenous diffusion process and apply the observability of the heat
equation to reconstruct the scalar field over the entire domain from
observations of the robots' random motion over a small subset of the domain. We
verify our results through simulations of the coverage scenario on a 2D domain
