Identification of nonlinear time-varying systems using an online sliding-window and common model structure selection (CMSS) approach with applications to EEG

algorithm is proposed to select a common model structure. The main idea and key procedure is: First, generate K 1 data sets (the first K data sets are used for training, and theK 1 th one is used for testing) using an online sliding window method; then detect significant model terms to form a common model structure which fits over all the K
training data sets using the new proposed CMSS approach. Finally, estimate and refine the time-varying parameters for the identified common-structured model using a Recursive Least Squares (RLS) parameter estimation method. The new method can effectively detect and adaptively track the transient variation of nonstationary signals. Two examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the new approach including an application to an EEG data set

In nonlinear system identification, the available observed data are conventionally partitioned into two parts: the training data that are used for model identification and the test data that are used for model performance testing. This sort of ‘hold-out’ or ‘split-sample’ data partitioning
method is convenient and the associated model identification procedure is in general easy to implement. The resultant model obtained from such a once-partitioned single training dataset, however, may occasionally lack robustness and generalisation to represent future unseen data, because the performance of the identified model may be highly dependent on how the data partition is made. To
overcome the drawback of the hold-out data partitioning method, this study presents a new random subsampling and multifold modelling (RSMM) approach to produce less biased or preferably unbiased models. A unified framework for solving a general class of conditional and robust set-membership estimation problems
In this paper we present a unified framework for solving a general class of
problems arising in the context of set-membership estimation/identification
theory. More precisely, the paper aims at providing an original approach for
the computation of optimal conditional and robust projection estimates in a
nonlinear estimation setting where the operator relating the data and the
parameter to be estimated is assumed to be a generic multivariate polynomial
function and the uncertainties affecting the data are assumed to belong to
semialgebraic sets. By noticing that the computation of both the conditional
and the robust projection optimal estimators requires the solution to min-max
optimization problems that share the same structure, we propose a unified
two-stage approach based on semidefinite-relaxation techniques for solving such
estimation problems. The key idea of the proposed procedure is to recognize
that the optimal functional of the inner optimization problems can be
approximated to any desired precision by a multivariate polynomial function by
suitably exploiting recently proposed results in the field of parametric
optimization. Two simulation examples are reported to show the effectiveness of
