    HEVC real-time decoding

    The new High Efficiency Video Coding Standard (HEVC) was finalized in January 2013. Compared to its predecessor H.264 / MPEG4-AVC, this new international standard is able to reduce the bitrate by 50% for the same subjective video quality. This paper investigates decoder optimizations that are needed to achieve HEVC real-time software decoding on a mobile processor. It is shown that HEVC real-time decoding up to high definition video is feasible using instruction extensions of the processor while decoding 4K ultra high definition video in real-time requires additional parallel processing. For parallel processing, a picture-level parallel approach has been chosen because it is generic and does not require bitstreams with special indication

Especially when it comes to transmit high resolution video like 4K over the internet or in broadcast, the 50% bitrate reduction is essential.     Highly parallel HEVC decoding for heterogeneous systems with CPU and GPU

    The High Efficiency Video Coding HEVC standard provides a higher compression efficiency than other video coding standards but at the cost of an increased computational load, which makes hard to achieve real-time encoding/decoding for ultra high-resolution and high-quality video sequences. Graphics Processing Units GPU are known to provide massive processing capability for highly parallel and regular computing kernels, but not all HEVC decoding procedures are suited for GPU execution. Furthermore, if HEVC decoding is accelerated by GPUs, energy efficiency is another concern for heterogeneous CPU+GPU decoding. In this paper, a highly parallel HEVC decoder for heterogeneous CPU+GPU system is proposed. It exploits available parallelism in HEVC decoding on the CPU, GPU, and between the CPU and GPU devices simultaneously. On top of that, different workload balancing schemes can be selected according to the devoted CPU and GPU computing resources. Furthermore, an energy optimized solution is proposed by tuning GPU clock rates. Results show that the proposed decoder achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art CPU decoder, and the best performance among the workload balancing schemes depends on the available CPU and GPU computing resources. In particular, with an NVIDIA Titan X Maxwell GPU and an Intel Xeon E5-2699v3 CPU, the proposed decoder delivers 167 frames per second (fps) for Ultra HD 4K videos, when four CPU cores are used. Compared to the state-of-the-art CPU decoder using four CPU cores, the proposed decoder gains a speedup factor of . When decoding performance is bounded by the CPU, a system wise energy reduction up to 36% is achieved by using fixed (and lower) GPU clocks, compared to the default dynamic clock settings on the GPU.EC/H2020/688759/EU/Low-Power Parallel Computing on GPUs 2/LPGPU

    Parallel video decoding in the emerging HEVC standard

    In this paper we propose and evaluate a parallelization strategy for the emerging HEVC video coding standard. The proposed strategy is based on entropy slices which allows exploiting parallelism in the entropy decoding stage while maintaining high coding efficiency. Our approach requires to encode videos with one entropy slice per LCU row in order to decode multiple LCU rows in a wavefront parallel manner. Evaluations performed on a PC with 12 Intel Xeon cores running at 3.3 GHz show that it is possible to achieve real-time performance for 1920×1080p50 (53.1 fps) and 2560×1600 (29.5fps) video resolutions with speedups of 5.2× and 6.3× compared to sequential execution, respectively

    Parallel scalability and efficiency of HEVC parallelization approaches

    Unlike H.264/advanced video coding, where parallelism was an afterthought, High Efficiency Video Coding currently contains several proposals aimed at making it more parallel-friendly. A performance comparison of the different proposals, however, has not yet been performed. In this paper, we will fill this gap by presenting efficient implementations of the most promising parallelization proposals, namely tiles and wavefront parallel processing (WPP). In addition, we present a novel approach called overlapped wavefront (OWF), which achieves higher performance and efficiency than tiles and WPP. Experiments conducted on a 12-core system running at 3.33 GHz show that our implementations achieve average speedups, for 4k sequences, of 8.7, 9.3, and 10.7 for WPP, tiles, and OWF, respectively

    Parallel HEVC Decoding on Multi- and Many-core Architectures : A Power and Performance Analysis

    The Joint Collaborative Team on Video Decoding is developing a new standard named High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) that aims at reducing the bitrate of H.264/AVC by another 50 %. In order to fulfill the computational demands of the new standard, in particular for high resolutions and at low power budgets, exploiting parallelism is no longer an option but a requirement. Therefore, HEVC includes several coding tools that allows to divide each picture into several partitions that can be processed in parallel, without degrading the quality nor the bitrate. In this paper we adapt one of these approaches, the Wavefront Parallel Processing (WPP) coding, and show how it can be implemented on multi- and many-core processors. Our approach, named Overlapped Wavefront (OWF), processes several partitions as well as several pictures in parallel. This has the advantage that the amount of (thread-level) parallelism stays constant during execution. In addition, performance and power results are provided for three platforms: a server Intel CPU with 8 cores, a laptop Intel CPU with 4 cores, and a TILE-Gx36 with 36 cores from Tilera. The results show that our parallel HEVC decoder is capable of achieving an average frame rate of 116 fps for 4k resolution on a standard multicore CPU. The results also demonstrate that exploiting more parallelism by increasing the number of cores can improve the energy efficiency measured in terms of Joules per frame substantially

    SIMD acceleration for HEVC decoding

    Single instruction multiple data (SIMD) instructions have been commonly used to accelerate video codecs. The recently introduced High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) codec like its predecessors is based on the hybrid video codec principle and, therefore, is also well suited to be accelerated with SIMD. In this paper we present the SIMD optimization for the entire HEVC decoder for all major SIMD instruction set architectures. Evaluation has been performed on 14 mobile and PC platforms covering most major architectures released in recent years. With SIMD, up to 5× speedup can be achieved over the entire HEVC decoder, resulting in up to 133 and 37.8 frames/s on average on a single core for Main profile 1080p and Main10 profile 2160p sequences, respectively.EC/FP7/288653/EU/Low-Power Parallel Computing on GPUs/LPGP

    VLSI architectures design for encoders of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard

    The growing popularity of high resolution video and the continuously increasing demands for high quality video on mobile devices are producing stronger needs for more efficient video encoder. Concerning these desires, HEVC, a newest video coding standard, has been developed by a joint team formed by ISO/IEO MPEG and ITU/T VCEG. Its design goal is to achieve a 50% compression gain over its predecessor H.264 with an equal or even higher perceptual video quality. Motion Estimation (ME) being as one of the most critical module in video coding contributes almost 50%-70% of computational complexity in the video encoder. This high consumption of the computational resources puts a limit on the performance of encoders, especially for full HD or ultra HD videos, in terms of coding speed, bit-rate and video quality. Thus the major part of this work concentrates on the computational complexity reduction and improvement of timing performance of motion estimation algorithms for HEVC standard. First, a new strategy to calculate the SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) for motion estimation is designed based on the statistics on property of pixel data of video sequences. This statistics demonstrates the size relationship between the sum of two sets of pixels has a determined connection with the distribution of the size relationship between individual pixels from the two sets. Taking the advantage of this observation, only a small proportion of pixels is necessary to be involved in the SAD calculation. Simulations show that the amount of computations required in the full search algorithm is reduced by about 58% on average and up to 70% in the best case. Secondly, from the scope of parallelization an enhanced TZ search for HEVC is proposed using novel schemes of multiple MVPs (motion vector predictor) and shared MVP. Specifically, resorting to multiple MVPs the initial search process is performed in parallel at multiple search centers, and the ME processing engine for PUs within one CU are parallelized based on the MVP sharing scheme on CU (coding unit) level. Moreover, the SAD module for ME engine is also parallelly implemented for PU size of 32×32. Experiments indicate it achieves an appreciable improvement on the throughput and coding efficiency of the HEVC video encoder. In addition, the other part of this thesis is contributed to the VLSI architecture design for finding the first W maximum/minimum values targeting towards high speed and low hardware cost. The architecture based on the novel bit-wise AND scheme has only half of the area of the best reference solution and its critical path delay is comparable with other implementations. While the FPCG (full parallel comparison grid) architecture, which utilizes the optimized comparator-based structure, achieves 3.6 times faster on average on the speed and even 5.2 times faster at best comparing with the reference architectures. Finally the architecture using the partial sorting strategy reaches a good balance on the timing performance and area, which has a slightly lower or comparable speed with FPCG architecture and a acceptable hardware cost
