Paradoxes in Social Networks with Multiple Products
Recently, we introduced in arXiv:1105.2434 a model for product adoption in
social networks with multiple products, where the agents, influenced by their
neighbours, can adopt one out of several alternatives. We identify and analyze
here four types of paradoxes that can arise in these networks. To this end, we
use social network games that we recently introduced in arxiv:1202.2209. These
paradoxes shed light on possible inefficiencies arising when one modifies the
sets of products available to the agents forming a social network. One of the
paradoxes corresponds to the well-known Braess paradox in congestion games and
shows that by adding more choices to a node, the network may end up in a
situation that is worse for everybody. We exhibit a dual version of this, where
removing available choices from someone can eventually make everybody better
off. The other paradoxes that we identify show that by adding or removing a
product from the choice set of some node may lead to permanent instability.
Finally, we also identify conditions under which some of these paradoxes cannot

Social Network Games with Obligatory Product Selection
Recently, Apt and Markakis introduced a model for product adoption in social
networks with multiple products, where the agents, influenced by their
neighbours, can adopt one out of several alternatives (products). To analyze
these networks we introduce social network games in which product adoption is
obligatory.
We show that when the underlying graph is a simple cycle, there is a
polynomial time algorithm allowing us to determine whether the game has a Nash
equilibrium. In contrast, in the arbitrary case this problem is NP-complete. We
also show that the problem of determining whether the game is weakly acyclic is
co-NP hard.
Using these games we analyze various types of paradoxes that can arise in the
considered networks. One of them corresponds to the well-known Braess paradox
in congestion games. In particular, we show that social networks exist with the
property that by adding an additional product to a specific node, the choices
of the nodes will unavoidably evolve in such a way that everybody is strictly

Managing the Tensions at the Intersection of the Triple Bottom Line: A Paradox Theory Approach to Sustainability Management
Corporate sustainability management encompasses multiple dimensions: environmental, social, and economic. Companies are increasingly evaluated within the public sphere, and within their own organizations, according to the degree to which they are perceived to simultaneously promote this nexus of virtues. This article seeks to explore the tensions frequently faced by organizations that strive to manage these dimensions and the role of public policy in that pursuit. A multipleâcase study approach is utilized in which the authors selected case organizations according to whether they were attempting to manage the three dimensions of sustainability. The authors utilize paradox theory and a typology provided by previous research to understand the nature of the tensions that emerge in the selected case study organizations. They extend this previous work by examining the role of public policy in providing the situational conditions to make these paradoxical tensions salient, and they examine organizational responses to these conditions. Directions for firms, policy makers, and future researchers are provided on the basis of this studyâs findings

STRUCTURING FOR GLOCALIZATION: THE MINIMAL NETWORK
Globalization and localization seem to be opposite concepts â a thesis and its antithesis. Nonetheless, managers seem to be able to handle the paradox posed by these two contradicting tensions by enacting, via action, a synthesis that allows for the co-presence of a high level of global integration and local adaptation (instead of a compromise between both), which has been labeled glocalization. We discuss how the concept of improvisation allows this synthesis by developing the two poles that ground it, namely âglocalâ strategy and âglocalâ organization. Global advantage requires a dialectical capability that organizations rarely achieve, and the importance of which orthodox management theory rarely recognizes. JEL codes:
Introducing conflict as the microfoundation of organizational ambidexterity
This article contributes to our understanding of organizational ambidexterity by introducing conflict as its microfoundation. Existing research distinguishes between three approaches to how organizations can be ambidextrous, that is, engage in both exploitation and exploration. They may sequentially shift the strategic focus of the organization over time, they may establish structural arrangements enabling the simultaneous pursuit of being both exploitative and explorative, or they may provide a supportive organizational context for ambidextrous behavior. However, we know little about how exactly ambidexterity is accomplished and managed. We argue that ambidexterity is a dynamic and conflict-laden phenomenon, and we locate conflict at the level of individuals, units, and organizations. We develop the argument that conflicts in social interaction serve as the microfoundation to organizing ambidexterity, but that their function and type vary across the different approaches toward ambidexterity. The perspective developed in this article opens up promising research avenues to examine how organizations purposefully manage ambidexterity
Tourism to religious sites, case studies from Hungary and England: exploring paradoxical views on tourism, commodification and costâbenefits
The application of systems theory to tourism development has a pedigree that has largely been derived from econometrics and macroâeconomic theory (Baggio et al., 2010; Franch et al., 2010; Choi and Sirakaya, 2006; Schianetz and Kavanagh, 2007, 2008; Dwyer et al., 2010). This paper identifies opportunities and some barriers to developing sites of religious worship for tourism to maximise income and engage appropriate resources allocation strategies. The authors have investigated tourism development that is sympathetic to sacred purposes at these sites over several years. Religious sites are now acknowledging that homogeneous supply responses may no longer be appropriate. Each special site demands a heterogeneous response of site guardians to changeable demand and careful evaluation of how to maximise income generated from very limited resources. This necessitates improved skills in guardians to build appropriate point of sale products and services that fit with consumption expectations and are congruent with sacred purpose
