The Impact of the Electronic Medical Record on Health Information Management Staff in Two Southeastern States
Health information management (HIM) staffs in health care facilities have a long history of managing medical records in a paper format. Since 2009, with the passage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), health care facilities have been rapidly changing from a paper medical record system to an electronic system. The adoption of electronic record systems has reduced or eliminated paper medical record forms which consequently changed many HIM staff’s jobs. A survey of HIM professionals was conducted in two southeastern states to determine any increase or decrease in HIM staff numbers and to identify any changes in required HIM skill levels. While the response rate of the survey was low, the survey results yielded much information about the actual changes HIM staffs are experiencing with the adoption of electronic record systems in their health care facilities. This information will be valuable to HIM professionals by aiding them in developing realistic strategic plans for the future of their HIM departments
A Neuroimaging Web Interface for Data Acquisition, Processing and Visualization of Multimodal Brain Images
Structural and functional brain images are generated as essential modalities for medical experts to learn about the different functions of the brain. These images are typically visually inspected by experts. Many software packages are available to process medical images, but they are complex and difficult to use. The software packages are also hardware intensive. As a consequence, this dissertation proposes a novel Neuroimaging Web Services Interface (NWSI) as a series of processing pipelines for a common platform to store, process, visualize and share data. The NWSI system is made up of password-protected interconnected servers accessible through a web interface. The web-interface driving the NWSI is based on Drupal, a popular open source content management system. Drupal provides a user-based platform, in which the core code for the security and design tools are updated and patched frequently. New features can be added via modules, while maintaining the core software secure and intact. The webserver architecture allows for the visualization of results and the downloading of tabulated data. Several forms are ix available to capture clinical data. The processing pipeline starts with a FreeSurfer (FS) reconstruction of T1-weighted MRI images. Subsequently, PET, DTI, and fMRI images can be uploaded. The Webserver captures uploaded images and performs essential functionalities, while processing occurs in supporting servers. The computational platform is responsive and scalable. The current pipeline for PET processing calculates all regional Standardized Uptake Value ratios (SUVRs). The FS and SUVR calculations have been validated using Alzheimer\u27s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) results posted at Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI). The NWSI system provides access to a calibration process through the centiloid scale, consolidating Florbetapir and Florbetaben tracers in amyloid PET images. The interface also offers onsite access to machine learning algorithms, and introduces new heat maps that augment expert visual rating of PET images. NWSI has been piloted using data and expertise from Mount Sinai Medical Center, the 1Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC), Baptist Health South Florida, Nicklaus Children\u27s Hospital, and the University of Miami. All results were obtained using our processing servers in order to maintain data validity, consistency, and minimal processing bias
Attachment Matters for All - An Attachment Mapping Exercise for Children's Services in Scotland
As part of the first phase of the Looked After Strategic Implementation Group (LACSIG), the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration (SCRA) undertook research into care and permanence planning for younger children in care.1 They focused on 100 children all aged under four years old when they first came to the attention of services and examined how long it took from that point to achieve permanence. For over 90% of children this process took longer than two years and more than half had still not achieved a permanent placement four years after first contact with services. Several children had also experienced multiple placements, with transitions between carers often occurring at critical developmental points. The research highlighted the negative impact on long-term outcomes of such continued disruption of children’s attachments
International Telemedicine/Disaster Medicine Conference: Papers and Presentations
The first International Telemedicine/Disaster Medicine Conference was held in Dec. 1991. The overall purpose was to convene an international, multidisciplinary gathering of experts to discuss the emerging field of telemedicine and assess its future directions; principally the application of space technology to disaster response and management, but also to clinical medicine, remote health care, public health, and other needs. This collection is intended to acquaint the reader with recent landmark efforts in telemedicine as applied to disaster management and remote health care, the technical requirements of telemedicine systems, the application of telemedicine and telehealth in the U.S. space program, and the social and humanitarian dimensions of this area of medicine

Designed as a core or supplementary text for upper elementary, middle and high school teachers and students, Building Democracy for All offers instructional ideas, interactive resources, links to primary sources, multicultural materials, and multimodal learning materials for interest-building explorations of United States government as well as students’ roles as citizens in a democratic society. It focuses on the importance of community engagement and social responsibility as understood and acted upon by middle and high school students—core themes in the 2018 Massachusetts 8th Grade Curriculum Framework, and which are found in many state history and social studies curriculum frameworks around the country. Building Democracy for All has been developed by a collaborative writing team of higher education faculty, public school teachers, educational librarians, and college students who are preparing to become history and social studies teachers. The primary editors and curators are from the University of Massachusetts Amherst College of Education. Contributing teachers come from school districts in the Connecticut River valley region of western Massachusetts (Amherst, Gateway, Westfield, Hampshire Regional, and Springfield).
