A report on the development of a handbook on computer literacy for teachers and principals
The handbook stresses the need for teachers and administrators to prepare themselves for teaching in the age of computers. Teachers and administrators must be willing to become computer literate to provide a relevant education for the present or future generations of students. The students of today need to prepare for jobs in the "Information Age" or "Information Revolution" which will transform society in the next twenty years. -- The main purpose of this handbook is to make educators aware of the need for computer literacy and provide an opportunity for them to acquire a general knowledge of computers, their uses in society, as well as applications in education. All teachers regardless of subject speciality need to become computer literate in order to integrate computers into their teaching strategies. -- The handbook is divided into ten chapters. The first six chapters introduce the reader to the term computer literacy, defines it, and presents basic information about computers, computer languages, programming and some social problems that have arisen or are being exacerbated by the widespread use of computers. The remaining four chapters are designed to inform the reader about the educational applications of computers - their uses and limitations. The writer recognizes the need for in-service education to precede the introduction of computers into schools. If computers are to be utilized to the fullest extent and today's students are to become computer literate citizens, then teachers and administrators must become knowledgeable of computers, their uses in society and their educational applications. -- The writer believes that this handbook will offer teachers and principals an opportunity to acquire a general knowledge of computers and their use
