Performance Analysis in Full-Duplex Relaying Systems withWireless Power Transfer
Energy harvesting (EH) technology has become increasingly attractive as an appealing solution to provide long-lasting power for energy-constrained wireless cooperative sensor networks. EH in such networks is particularly important as it can enable information relaying. Different from absorbing energy from intermittent and unpredictable nature, such as solar, wind, and vibration, harvesting from radio frequency (RF) radiated by ambient transmitters has received tremendous attention. The RF signal can convey both information and energy at the same time, which facilitates the development of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. Besides, ambient RF is widely available from the base station, WIFI, and mobile phone in the current information era. However, some open issues associated with EH are existing in the state-of-art. One of the key challenges is rapid energy loss during the transferring process, especially for long-distance transmission. The other challenge is the design of protocols to optimally coordinate between information and power transmission.
Meanwhile, in-band full-duplex (IBFD) communication have gained considerable attraction by researchers, which has the ability to improve system spectral efficiency. IBFD can receive information and forward information at the same time on the same frequency. Since the RF signal can be superimposed, the antenna of the IBFD system receives the RF signal from both desired transmitter and local transmitter. Due to the short distance of the local transmission signals, the received signal power is much larger than the desired transmission signals, which results in faulty receiving of the desired signals. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the local self-interference cancellation method of the IBFD system. In the recent state-of-art, three main types of self-interference cancellations are researched, which are passive cancellations, digital cancellations, and analog cancellations. In this thesis, we study polarization-enabled digital self-interference cancellation (PDC) scheme in IBFD EH systems which cancels self-interference by antenna polarization (propagation domain) and digital processing (digital domain).
The theme of this thesis is to address the following two questions: how the selfinterference would be canceled in the IBFD EH system and how to optimize key performances of the system to optimal system performances. This thesis makes five research contributions in the important area of IBFD relaying systems with wireless power transfer. Their applications are primarily in the domains of the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G-and-beyond wireless networks. The overarching objective of the thesis is to construct analytical system models and evaluate system performance (outage probability, throughput, error) in various scenarios. In all five contributions, system models and analytical expressions of the performance metrics are derived, followed by computer simulations for performance analysis
Outage Performance of Two-Hop OFDM Systems with Spatially Random Decode-and-Forward Relays
In this paper, we analyze the outage performance of different multicarrier
relay selection schemes for two-hop orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing
(OFDM) systems in a Poisson field of relays. In particular, special emphasis is
placed on decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems, equipped with bulk and
per-subcarrier selection schemes, respectively. The exact expressions for
outage probability are derived in integrals for general cases. In addition,
asymptotic expressions for outage probability in the high signal-to-noise ratio
(SNR) region in the finite circle relay distribution region are determined in
closed forms for both relay selection schemes. Also, the outage probabilities
for free space in the infinite relay distribution region are derived in closed
forms. Meanwhile, a series of important properties related to cooperative
systems in random networks are investigated, including diversity, outage
probability ratio of two selection schemes and optimization of the number of
subcarriers in terms of system throughput. All analysis is numerically verified
by simulations. Finally, a framework for analyzing the outage performance of
OFDM systems with spatially random relays is constructed, which can be easily
modified to analyze other similar cases with different forwarding protocols,
location distributions and/or channel conditions
Enhancing Physical Layer Security in AF Relay Assisted Multi-Carrier Wireless Transmission
In this paper, we study the physical layer security (PLS) problem in the dual
hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless
communication system. First, we consider a single user single relay system and
study a joint power optimization problem at the source and relay subject to
individual power constraint at the two nodes. The aim is to maximize the end to
end secrecy rate with optimal power allocation over different sub-carriers.
Later, we consider a more general multi-user multi-relay scenario. Under high
SNR approximation for end to end secrecy rate, an optimization problem is
formulated to jointly optimize power allocation at the BS, the relay selection,
sub-carrier assignment to users and the power loading at each of the relaying
node. The target is to maximize the overall security of the system subject to
independent power budget limits at each transmitting node and the OFDMA based
exclusive sub-carrier allocation constraints. A joint optimization solution is
obtained through duality theory. Dual decomposition allows to exploit convex
optimization techniques to find the power loading at the source and relay
nodes. Further, an optimization for power loading at relaying nodes along with
relay selection and sub carrier assignment for the fixed power allocation at
the BS is also studied. Lastly, a sub-optimal scheme that explores joint power
allocation at all transmitting nodes for the fixed subcarrier allocation and
relay assignment is investigated. Finally, simulation results are presented to
validate the performance of the proposed schemes.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted in Transactions on Emerging

Adaptive OFDM Index Modulation for Two-Hop Relay-Assisted Networks
In this paper, we propose an adaptive orthogonal frequency-division
multiplexing (OFDM) index modulation (IM) scheme for two-hop relay networks. In
contrast to the traditional OFDM IM scheme with a deterministic and fixed
mapping scheme, in this proposed adaptive OFDM IM scheme, the mapping schemes
between a bit stream and indices of active subcarriers for the first and second
hops are adaptively selected by a certain criterion. As a result, the active
subcarriers for the same bit stream in the first and second hops can be varied
in order to combat slow frequency-selective fading. In this way, the system
reliability can be enhanced. Additionally, considering the fact that a relay
device is normally a simple node, which may not always be able to perform
mapping scheme selection due to limited processing capability, we also propose
an alternative adaptive methodology in which the mapping scheme selection is
only performed at the source and the relay will simply utilize the selected
mapping scheme without changing it. The analyses of average outage probability,
network capacity and symbol error rate (SER) are given in closed form for
decode-and-forward (DF) relaying networks and are substantiated by numerical
results generated by Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 30 page
Multihop Diversity in Wideband OFDM Systems: The Impact of Spatial Reuse and Frequency Selectivity
The goal of this paper is to establish which practical routing schemes for
wireless networks are most suitable for wideband systems in the power-limited
regime, which is, for example, a practically relevant mode of operation for the
analysis of ultrawideband (UWB) mesh networks. For this purpose, we study the
tradeoff between energy efficiency and spectral efficiency (known as the
power-bandwidth tradeoff) in a wideband linear multihop network in which
transmissions employ orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)
modulation and are affected by quasi-static, frequency-selective fading.
Considering open-loop (fixed-rate) and closed-loop (rate-adaptive) multihop
relaying techniques, we characterize the impact of routing with spatial reuse
on the statistical properties of the end-to-end conditional mutual information
(conditioned on the specific values of the channel fading parameters and
therefore treated as a random variable) and on the energy and spectral
efficiency measures of the wideband regime. Our analysis particularly deals
with the convergence of these end-to-end performance measures in the case of
large number of hops, i.e., the phenomenon first observed in \cite{Oyman06b}
and named as ``multihop diversity''. Our results demonstrate the realizability
of the multihop diversity advantages in the case of routing with spatial reuse
for wideband OFDM systems under wireless channel effects such as path-loss and
quasi-static frequency-selective multipath fading.Comment: 6 pages, to be published in Proc. 2008 IEEE International Symposium
