Measuring working memory load effects on electrophysiological markers of attention orienting during a simulated drive
Intersection accidents result in a significant proportion of road fatalities, and attention allocation likely plays a role. Attention allocation may depend on (limited) working memory (WM) capacity. Driving is often combined with tasks increasing WM load, consequently impairing attention orienting. This study (n = 22) investigated WM load effects on event-related potentials (ERPs) related to attention orienting. A simulated driving environment allowed continuous lane-keeping measurement. Participants were asked to orient attention covertly towards the side indicated by an arrow, and to respond only to moving cars appearing on the attended side by pressing a button. WM load was manipulated using a concurrent memory task. ERPs showed typical attentional modulation (cue: contralateral negativity, LDAP; car: N1, P1, SN and P3) under low and high load conditions. With increased WM load, lane-keeping performance improved, while dual task performance degraded (memory task: increased error rate; orienting task: increased false alarms, smaller P3).
Practitioner Summary: Intersection driver-support systems aim to improve traffic safety and flow. However, in-vehicle systems induce WM load, increasing the tendency to yield. Traffic flow reduces if drivers stop at inappropriate times, reducing the effectiveness of systems. Consequently, driver-support systems could include WM load measurement during driving in the development phase
Does taking vitamin, mineral and fatty acid supplements prevent cognitive decline? A systematic review of randomized controlled trials
Background Observational studies have shown associations between nutritional status and cognition in later life but evidence from intervention studies is unclear. The present study systematically reviewed the evidence on the effect of nutrient supplementation on cognitive function in people aged ≥65 years.
Methods Databases including MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched up to 1 September 2006. Randomized controlled trials using at least one kind of vitamin, mineral or omega-3 fatty acid, evaluating standardized neuropsychological test(s), were included. There were no restrictions on participants' baseline nutritional status or cognitive function. Quality assessment and data abstraction were conducted by one author and checked by another.
Results Of 4229 articles retrieved, 22 trials (3442 participants) were identified. Many were small, short duration and of poor methodology. Only 16 out of 122 cognitive tests were significantly different between groups. A meta-analysis showed no significant effect of taking B vitamins or antioxidant vitamins on global cognitive function. There was insufficient evidence to evaluate the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on any cognitive domains.
Conclusion There was little evidence of a beneficial effect from taking B vitamins or antioxidant supplements on global cognitive function in later life. Larger-scale randomized controlled trials of longer duration in selected age groups are needed.Institute of Applied Health Science, University of Aberdeen;

Smart Pacing for Effective Online Ad Campaign Optimization
In targeted online advertising, advertisers look for maximizing campaign
performance under delivery constraint within budget schedule. Most of the
advertisers typically prefer to impose the delivery constraint to spend budget
smoothly over the time in order to reach a wider range of audiences and have a
sustainable impact. Since lots of impressions are traded through public
auctions for online advertising today, the liquidity makes price elasticity and
bid landscape between demand and supply change quite dynamically. Therefore, it
is challenging to perform smooth pacing control and maximize campaign
performance simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a smart pacing approach
in which the delivery pace of each campaign is learned from both offline and
online data to achieve smooth delivery and optimal performance goals. The
implementation of the proposed approach in a real DSP system is also presented.
Experimental evaluations on both real online ad campaigns and offline
simulations show that our approach can effectively improve campaign performance

An information assistant system for the prevention of tunnel vision in crisis management
In the crisis management environment, tunnel vision is a set of bias in decision makers’ cognitive process which often leads to incorrect understanding of the real crisis situation, biased perception of information, and improper decisions. The tunnel vision phenomenon is a consequence of both the challenges in the task and the natural limitation in a human being’s cognitive process. An information assistant system is proposed with the purpose of preventing tunnel vision. The system serves as a platform for monitoring the on-going crisis event. All information goes through the system before arrives at the user. The system enhances the data quality, reduces the data quantity and presents the crisis information in a manner that prevents or repairs the user’s cognitive overload. While working with such a system, the users (crisis managers) are expected to be more likely to stay aware of the actual situation, stay open minded to possibilities, and make proper decisions
OS-Assisted Task Preemption for Hadoop
This work introduces a new task preemption primitive for Hadoop, that allows
tasks to be suspended and resumed exploiting existing memory management
mechanisms readily available in modern operating systems. Our technique fills
the gap that exists between the two extremes cases of killing tasks (which
waste work) or waiting for their completion (which introduces latency):
experimental results indicate superior performance and very small overheads
when compared to existing alternatives
