Revolutionary Coalition Strength and Collective Failure as Determinants of Status Reallocation
This experiment investigated the effects of collective performance and coalition strength on the redistribution of status prerogatives in triads. A status hierarchy was established within triads, such that one person held higher control status and the two others held lower status. Each group performed an ambiguous, decision-making task over two trials. Collective performance (i.e., success vs failure) was manipulated via bogus feedback regarding the groupās performance, while coalition strength was manipulated by varying the extent to which the two low-status members, acting together as a revolutionary coalition, could damage the outcomes received by the high-status member. Results indicate a collective-performance main effect, with the control prerogatives of the high-status person being reduced more under failure than under success. This effect is mediated by member dissatisfaction with the groupās activities. As predicted, the results also indicate a significant Collective Performance X Coalition Strength interaction effect. Strong coalitions achieved more extensive reallocation of status prerogatives than weak ones, but this occurred only on the second trial for groups experiencing recurring failure. This effect elucidates some of the difficulties involved in mobilizing joint efforts to exercise coalition-based influence
Political Globalization and Civil War in Former British Colonies
The purpose of this paper to determine why civil war onset reduces political globalization in former British colonies. I set out by testing the relationship between being a former British colony and civil war presence, demonstrating a positive, though not statistically significant, relationship. I also examine the history of British colonialism. Through setting up specific system of indirect rule, British colonizers created conditions that contributed to intra-state conflict. Furthermore, through constructing a unique institutional system and maintaining ties to its former colonies, the British have created an atmosphere conducive to international political engagement after the onset of civil war. Yet, when the relationship between civil war presence and political globalization is tested, it is demonstrated that civil war presence actually increases political globalization. This relationship is further explained by controlling for the post-Cold War period, which gives civil war presence and British colonialism further significance in determining political globalization
Public Financing and the Underrepresentation of Women in United States Elected Political Offices
Approaching the 100-year anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment, women comprise approximately 51 percent of the American population but hold only 24.8 percent of state legislative seats and 19.4 percent of United States Congressional seats. The scholarly literature suggests that one contributing factor to this inequality is a real or perceived gender difference in fundraising success. My hypothesis is that state public financing programs will decrease gender inequality in state legislative offices. I examined the role campaign finance plays in gender inequality in elected office by conducting a comparative case study of the state legislatures of Minnesota and Iowa from 1975 to 2017. Since Minnesota and Iowa are similar in many of the other theoretical factors attributed to gender equality, I am able to isolate the effect of public financing. Minnesota implemented a public financing program for state legislative office in 1974. Iowa does not have a public financing program and allows unlimited campaign donations by various types of donors. In 1975, women comprised 4% of state legislative seats in Minnesota and 9% of state legislative seats in Iowa. Currently, Minnesotaās state legislature is 32% women, and Iowaās state legislature is 22% women. According to the Center for American Women and Politics, Minnesota ranks ninth and Iowa ranks thirty-first in terms of gender equality in state legislative chambers. I hope my research can provide a preliminary understanding of how public campaign financing can increase gender equality in elected office
Civil War and Globalization: The Effect of Colonialism on Political Globalization
The purpose of this paper to determine why civil war onset reduces political globalization in former British colonies. Through linear regression and logistic regression analyses, I test the affect of civil war onset and the presence of civil war on political globalization, controlling for former British colonies, French colonies, and other factors. More important, however, is the history behind British colonialism. Through setting up a unique institutional system and maintaining ties to its former colonies, the British have created an atmosphere conducive to international political engagement after the onset of civil war. This study shows that while civil war onset creates an immediate backlash in former British colonies, these same states actually increase their political globalization as the duration of conflict continues
PolitiÄka sociologija u politoloÅ”kim Äasopisima u Hrvatskoj
Autor u Älanku daje prikaz politiÄke sociologije kao (pod)discipline suvremene
politiÄke znanosti, s posebnim osvrtom na Hrvatsku. Rad se sastoji od tri dijela.
U prvome autor predstavlja predmet, metodu i razvoj suvremene politiÄke sociologije,
stavljajuÄi poseban naglasak na eklektiÄnu prirodu (pod)discipline.
Drugi dio rada posveÄen je bibliometrijskoj analizi triju Äasopisa relevantnih za
politologiju: PolitiÄka misao, Anali Hrvatskog politoloÅ”kog druÅ”tva i Suvremene
teme s obzirom na predmet politiÄke sociologije. Rezultati analize pokazuju
(IN ENGLISH: The author gives an overview of political sociology as a (sub)discipline of
modern political science, with special reference to Croatia. The paper consists
of three parts. In the first part the method and the development of modern political
sociology is given by putting special emphasis on the eclectic nature of
the (sub)discipline. The second part is dedicated to the bibliometric analysis
with respect to the subject matter of political sociology of three journals relevant
to political science in Croatia, namely PolitiÄka misao, Anali Hrvatskog
politoloŔkog druŔtva and Suvremene teme. The analysis results show an
extremely small number of papers in the field of political sociology in all
three journals, as well as the uneven distribution of topics within the subject
of political sociology. The third and final part of the paper compares Croatian
experiences in the field of political sociology with international trends and
other political science (sub)disciplines. The author concludes that the Croatian
political sociology is underdeveloped and inconsistent with the topics of
political sociologies in other countries.
Wine About It: How Climate Change is Affecting International Wine Markets
The purpose of this study is to understand the social context surrounding wine and how consumers and producers will act within the existing market structures to physical changes to wine due to climate change. After defining the socially embedded structure of market values, this paper questions how they will survive with the visible and invisible changes being made to wines and wine regions. Through various case studies the paper uncovers climate events happening across the world and how they will potentially change the economic landscape of wine markets. The different lenses required to understand the market lead to competing conclusions. Economists argue that market structures will allow for producers to fill in the gaps produced by these climate events whereas sociologists see the embedded values of certain wines irreplaceable as changing climates affect the physiological makeup of valued wines and wine regions
Revisiting the Far Right Violent Extremist Threat: Violent Extremist Plot Success From 1948 Through 2017
Far Right violent extremists have successfully executed over 150 violent plots in the United States in just the past decade. This exploratory study analyzed Far Right violent extremist plot success with the plot success of Islamist violent extremists, Far Left violent extremists, and Single Issue violent extremists based on publicly available data from the Profiles of Individual Radicalization in the United States (PIRUS) for the period of 1948 through 2017. By evaluating existing literature on Far Right violent extremism and analyzing the available PIRUS data, it was discovered that while Far Right violent extremists executed more successful violent plots than the other violent ideological extremist groups, Far Left violent extremists proportionally had more successful violent plots. A sample from the PIRUS database was explored, and the analysis demonstrates that the variables of Far Left radicalization, violence against persons and property, and plot preparation are significantly correlated with violent plot success
