Should the structure have been underpinned? - reflection after a quarter of a century
A case study of a domestic structure that suffered damage as a result of foundation movement in the 1970s is examined. Conclusions and recommendations made at the time are re-visited in the light of limitations of the original site investigation and subsequent performance of the structure

introduce a disordered model which allows us to reconstruct all the main

Digital predictions of complex cylinder packed columns
A digital computational approach has been developed to simulate realistic structures of packed beds. The underlying principle of the method is digitisation of the particles and packing space, enabling the generation of realistic structures. Previous publications [Caulkin, R., Fairweather, M., Jia, X., Gopinathan, N., & Williams, R.A. (2006). An investigation of packed columns using a digital packing algorithm. An investigation of sphere packed shell-side columns using a digital packing algorithm. Computers & Chemical Engineering, 31, 1715–1724] have demonstrated the ability of the code in predicting the packing of spheres. For cylindrical particles, however, the original, random walk-based code proved less effective at predicting bed structure. In response to this, the algorithm has been modified to make use of collisions to guide particle movement in a way which does not sacrifice the advantage of simulation speed. Results of both the original and modified code are presented, with bulk and local voidage values compared with data derived by experimental methods. The results demonstrate that collisions and their impact on packing structure cannot be disregarded if realistic packing structures are to be obtained
No evidence of an 11.16 MeV 2+ state in 12C
An experiment using the 11B(3He,d)12C reaction was performed at iThemba LABS
at an incident energy of 44 MeV and analyzed with a high energy-resolution
magnetic spectrometer, to re-investigate states in 12C published in 1971. The
original investigation reported the existence of an 11.16 MeV state in 12C that
displays a 2+ nature. In the present experiment data were acquired at
laboratory angles of 25-, 30- and 35- degrees, to be as close to the c.m.
angles of the original measurements where the clearest signature of such a
state was observed. These new low background measurements revealed no evidence
of the previously reported state at 11.16 MeV in 12C
The Quality of the KombiFiD-Sample of Business Services Enterprises: Evidence from a Replication Study
This study tests whether the KombiFiD sample can be regarded as a high quality data set for empirical research on enterprises from business services industries. It performs an empirical investigation using the original data in a first step and replicates exactly this investigation using the KombiFiD sample in a second step. We find that large business services firms are oversampled in the KombiFiD agreement sample which leads to a higher share of exporting business services firms compared to the original data. After controlling for firm size and industries results based on the original data and on the KombiFiD sample are highly similar for West German firms. Therefore, the KombiFiD sample can be regarded as a sound base for empirical studies on West German firms from business services industries. For East Germany, however, the number of business services firms seems to be too small for empirical analyses, at least in the field of firm’s export participation.KombiFiD, Germany, business services firms
Novel cloning machine with supplementary information
Probabilistic cloning was first proposed by Duan and Guo. Then Pati
established a novel cloning machine (NCM) for copying superposition of multiple
clones simultaneously. In this paper, we deal with the novel cloning machine
with supplementary information (NCMSI). For the case of cloning two states, we
demonstrate that the optimal efficiency of the NCMSI in which the original
party and the supplementary party can perform quantum communication equals that
achieved by a two-step cloning protocol wherein classical communication is only
allowed between the original and the supplementary parties. From this
equivalence it follows that NCMSI may increase the success probabilities for
copying. Also, an upper bound on the unambiguous discrimination of two
nonorthogonal pure product states is derived. Our investigation generalizes and
