    The emergence of self-organisation in social systems: the case of the geographic industrial clusters

    The objective of this work is to use complexity theory to propose a new interpretation of industrial clusters. Industrial clusters constitute a specific type of econosphere, whose driving principles are self-organisation, economies of diversity and a configuration that optimises the exploration of diversity starting from the configuration of connectivity of the system. This work shows the centrality of diversity by linking complexity theory (intended as "a method for understanding diversity"') to different concepts such as power law distributions, self-organisation, autocatalytic cycles and connectivity.I propose a method to distinguish self-organising from non self-organising agglomerations, based on the correlation between self-organising dynamics and power law network theories. Self-organised criticality, rank-size rule and scale-free networks theories become three aspects indicating a common underlying pattern, i.e. the edge of chaos dynamic. I propose a general model of development of industrial clusters, based on the mutual interaction between social and economic autocatalytic cycle. Starting from Kauffman's idea(^2) on the autocatalytic properties of diversity, I illustrate how the loops of the economies of diversity are based on the expansion of systemic diversity (product of diversity and connectivity). My thesis provides a way to measure systemic diversity. In particular I introduce the distinction between modular innovation at the agent level and architectural innovation at the network level and show that the cluster constitutes an appropriate organisational form to manage the tension and dynamics of simultaneous modular and architectural innovation. The thesis is structured around two propositions: 1. Self-organising systems are closer to a power law than hierarchical systems or aggregates (collection of parts). For industrial agglomerations (SLLs), the closeness to a power law is related to the degree of self-organisation present in the agglomeration, and emerges in the agglomeration’s structural and/or behavioural properties subject to self-organising dynamic.2. Self-organising systems maximise the product of diversity times connectivity at a rate higher than hierarchical systems

    A self-organisation model for mobile robots in large structure assembly using multi-agent systems

    Mobile, self-organising robots are seen to be a possible solution to over-come the current limitations of fixed, dedicated automation systems particularly in the area of large structure assembly. Two of the key challenges for traditional ded-icated automation systems in large structure assembly are considered to be the trans-portation of products and the adaptation of manufacturing processes to changes in requirements. In order to make dynamic, self-organising systems a reality, several challenges in the process dynamics and logistical control need to be solved. In this paper, we propose a Multi-Agent System (MAS) approach to self-organise mobile robots in large structure assembly. The model is based on fixed-priority pre-emptive scheduling and uses a blackboard agent as a central information source and to facil-itate more common goal directed distributed negotiation and decision making be-tween agents representing the different needs of products and available mobile re-sources (robots)

    Self-Control in Cyberspace: Applying Dual Systems Theory to a Review of Digital Self-Control Tools

    Many people struggle to control their use of digital devices. However, our understanding of the design mechanisms that support user self-control remains limited. In this paper, we make two contributions to HCI research in this space: first, we analyse 367 apps and browser extensions from the Google Play, Chrome Web, and Apple App stores to identify common core design features and intervention strategies afforded by current tools for digital self-control. Second, we adapt and apply an integrative dual systems model of self-regulation as a framework for organising and evaluating the design features found. Our analysis aims to help the design of better tools in two ways: (i) by identifying how, through a well-established model of self-regulation, current tools overlap and differ in how they support self-control; and (ii) by using the model to reveal underexplored cognitive mechanisms that could aid the design of new tools.Comment: 11.5 pages (excl. references), 6 figures, 1 tabl

    Many approaches, reports and commissions have attempted to address the challenges of water at multiple levels. What is the unique proposition that the Global Commission on the Economics of Water (GCEW) provides?First, it identifies the systemic crisis of the global water cycle, based on new evidence and science.Second, it uses a “systems lens” to view water not as a sector, an input, or an adverse outcome, but as an organising principle to connect across the SDGs, climate action and biodiversity conservation.Third, it establishes a transformational goal for the global economy and all human societies: to treat water as a global common good — to respond to a crisis of the global water cycle and to resolve the multiple local and regional crises of too little, too much, or too dirty water.Fourth, it presents a set of transition goals across economic and social systems and natural systems as a collective response to the multidimensional, multi-level global water crisis.Fifth, it shows how these system transitions need collective action built around a new social contract between citizens, governments, businesses, communities and civil society, which functions effectively from the local to the global.Sixth, it highlights the opportunities for adopting a transformational goal of treating water as a global common good, noting that the full realisation of these benefits requires effective multilateral actions and diversified partnerships. We contend that treating water as an organising principle and water as a global common good will revitalise multilateral actions and, in a fragmented and contested world, promote prosperity, human well-being and ecosystem health for all by 2050

As such, the CORE Organic II ERA-Net aims at an effective and sustainable transnational researchprogramme, and has identified common research priorities for the organic sector where a transnational approach will give added value, has initiated research projects, and is organising project monitoring and the dissemination of results.     Owner challenges on major projects: The case of UK government

    Many studies agree that owner organisations are important for successful project organising, but they tend to focus on particular aspects of project organising rather than providing a holistic analysis of owners as organisations. Our objective is to collect evidence of the full range of challenges public sector owners face in managing their major projects. After reviewing the literature on owner organisations, we carry out a case survey of 26 major projects to identify the principal challenges using a content analysis of UK National Audit Office Value for Money reports. Our original contribution is that the findings provide the first comprehensive picture of the full range of challenges of project organising faced by owner organisations. These findings push us theoretically to extend the scope of research in project organising to identify an extended core set of dynamic capabilities for project owner organisations to address these challenges

    A survey of self organisation in future cellular networks

    This article surveys the literature over the period of the last decade on the emerging field of self organisation as applied to wireless cellular communication networks. Self organisation has been extensively studied and applied in adhoc networks, wireless sensor networks and autonomic computer networks; however in the context of wireless cellular networks, this is the first attempt to put in perspective the various efforts in form of a tutorial/survey. We provide a comprehensive survey of the existing literature, projects and standards in self organising cellular networks. Additionally, we also aim to present a clear understanding of this active research area, identifying a clear taxonomy and guidelines for design of self organising mechanisms. We compare strength and weakness of existing solutions and highlight the key research areas for further development. This paper serves as a guide and a starting point for anyone willing to delve into research on self organisation in wireless cellular communication networks
