Ordered optimal solutions and parametric minimum cut problems
AbstractIn this paper, we present an algebraic sufficient condition for the existence of a selection of optimal solutions in a parametric optimization problem that are totally ordered, but not necessarily monotone. Based on this result, we present necessary and sufficient conditions that ensure the existence of totally ordered selections of minimum cuts for some classes of parametric maximum flow problems. These classes subsume the class studied by Arai et al. [Discrete Appl. Math. 41 (1993) 69–74] as a special case
Optimal web-scale tiering as a flow problem
We present a fast online solver for large scale parametric max-flow problems as they occur in portfolio optimization, inventory management, computer vision, and logistics. Our algorithm solves an integer linear program in an online fashion. It exploits total unimodularity of the constraint matrix and a Lagrangian relaxation to solve the problem as a convex online game. The algorithm generates approximate solutions of max-flow problems by performing stochastic gradient descent on a set of flows. We apply the algorithm to optimize tier arrangement of over 84 million web pages on a layered set of caches to serve an incoming query stream optimally
An Algorithmic Theory of Dependent Regularizers, Part 1: Submodular Structure
We present an exploration of the rich theoretical connections between several
classes of regularized models, network flows, and recent results in submodular
function theory. This work unifies key aspects of these problems under a common
theory, leading to novel methods for working with several important models of
interest in statistics, machine learning and computer vision.
In Part 1, we review the concepts of network flows and submodular function
optimization theory foundational to our results. We then examine the
connections between network flows and the minimum-norm algorithm from
submodular optimization, extending and improving several current results. This
leads to a concise representation of the structure of a large class of pairwise
regularized models important in machine learning, statistics and computer
vision.
In Part 2, we describe the full regularization path of a class of penalized
regression problems with dependent variables that includes the graph-guided
LASSO and total variation constrained models. This description also motivates a
practical algorithm. This allows us to efficiently find the regularization path
of the discretized version of TV penalized models. Ultimately, our new
algorithms scale up to high-dimensional problems with millions of variables
Convex and Network Flow Optimization for Structured Sparsity
We consider a class of learning problems regularized by a structured
sparsity-inducing norm defined as the sum of l_2- or l_infinity-norms over
groups of variables. Whereas much effort has been put in developing fast
optimization techniques when the groups are disjoint or embedded in a
hierarchy, we address here the case of general overlapping groups. To this end,
we present two different strategies: On the one hand, we show that the proximal
operator associated with a sum of l_infinity-norms can be computed exactly in
polynomial time by solving a quadratic min-cost flow problem, allowing the use
of accelerated proximal gradient methods. On the other hand, we use proximal
splitting techniques, and address an equivalent formulation with
non-overlapping groups, but in higher dimension and with additional
constraints. We propose efficient and scalable algorithms exploiting these two
strategies, which are significantly faster than alternative approaches. We
illustrate these methods with several problems such as CUR matrix
factorization, multi-task learning of tree-structured dictionaries, background
subtraction in video sequences, image denoising with wavelets, and topographic
dictionary learning of natural image patches.Comment: to appear in the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR
A Coherent Ising Machine Based On Degenerate Optical Parametric Oscillators
A degenerate optical parametric oscillator network is proposed to solve the
NP-hard problem of finding a ground state of the Ising model. The underlying
operating mechanism originates from the bistable output phase of each
oscillator and the inherent preference of the network in selecting oscillation
modes with the minimum photon decay rate. Computational experiments are
performed on all instances reducible to the NP-hard MAX-CUT problems on cubic
graphs of order up to 20. The numerical results reasonably suggest the
effectiveness of the proposed network.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
