    Elastic Business Process Management: State of the Art and Open Challenges for BPM in the Cloud

    With the advent of cloud computing, organizations are nowadays able to react rapidly to changing demands for computational resources. Not only individual applications can be hosted on virtual cloud infrastructures, but also complete business processes. This allows the realization of so-called elastic processes, i.e., processes which are carried out using elastic cloud resources. Despite the manifold benefits of elastic processes, there is still a lack of solutions supporting them. In this paper, we identify the state of the art of elastic Business Process Management with a focus on infrastructural challenges. We conceptualize an architecture for an elastic Business Process Management System and discuss existing work on scheduling, resource allocation, monitoring, decentralized coordination, and state management for elastic processes. Furthermore, we present two representative elastic Business Process Management Systems which are intended to counter these challenges. Based on our findings, we identify open issues and outline possible research directions for the realization of elastic processes and elastic Business Process Management.Comment: Please cite as: S.     The Centripetal Network: How the Internet Holds Itself Together, and the Forces Tearing It Apart

    Two forces are in tension as the Internet evolves. One pushes toward interconnected common platforms; the other pulls toward fragmentation and proprietary alternatives. Their interplay drives many of the contentious issues in cyberlaw, intellectual property, and telecommunications policy, including the fight over network neutrality for broadband providers, debates over global Internet governance, and battles over copyright online. These are more than just conflicts between incumbents and innovators, or between openness and deregulation. Their roots lie in the fundamental dynamics of interconnected networks. Fortunately, there is an interdisciplinary literature on network properties, albeit one virtually unknown to legal scholars. The emerging field of network formation theory explains the pressures threatening to pull the Internet apart, and suggests responses. The Internet as we know it is surprisingly fragile. To continue the extraordinary outpouring of creativity and innovation that the Internet fosters, policy-makers must protect its composite structure against both fragmentation and excessive concentration of power. This paper, the first to apply network formation models to Internet law, shows how the Internet pulls itself together as a coherent whole. This very process, however, creates and magnifies imbalances that encourage balkanization. By understanding how networks behave, governments and other legal decision-makers can avoid unintended consequences and target their actions appropriately. A network-theoretic perspective holds great promise to inform the law and policy of the information economy

    On Evolving Partitioned Web Service Orchestrations

    International audienceMany researches argue that centralized Web Service (WS) orchestrations stop short in dealing with key requirements such as scalability, privacy and reliability. Consequently, fragmentation and decentralization have been proposed to overcome these limitations. In detail, the centralized orchestration is fragmented into behaviorally equivalent distributed partitions such that their combined execution recreates the function of the original orchestration. However, the evolving nature of business processes as well as the necessity to adapt to market changes created the need for an efficient change support. Since the decentralization leads to the distribution of the activities, the control and data flows, it becomes difficult to specify the changes directly on the derived partitions. Therefore, it is more judicious to specify the changes on the centralized orchestration model and propagate the changes to the derived partitions. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive change framework for partitioned WS orchestration scenarios and demonstrate how to specify and propagate the changes from the centralized model to its resulting decentralized partitions. The main advantage of such an approach is that only partitions that are related to the specified changes are affected. There is no need to re-compute the whole orchestration and re-deploy all the distributed partitions

    The role of intelligent systems in the development of peer-to-peer systems for energetic distribution management

    Intelligent Systems are one of today’s greatest strengths, while environmental sustainability is one of today’s biggest challenges. This study aims to integrate the most recent innovations in intelligent technologies with the development of smart energy grids and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems for energetic distribution. Specifically, it investigates the complex relations between these concepts, while analysing how developments in each field both influence and are influenced by each other. To do so, this study answers three research questions. The first one regards the implementation of Intelligent Systems, the second concerns the development of Smart Grids, while the third is concerned with the possibility of building P2P Systems. To provide relevant conclusions, an extensive literature review regarding all subjects was carried, along with a statistical analysis of three online surveys. The obtained results show that there are significant influences and connections between the development of intelligent technologies and the implementation of smart grids and P2P Systems, thus supporting several hypotheses formulated for this study. On this basis, conclusions are drawn concerning the high value of each topic in separate, and the even higher value of the topics when integrated.Sistemas Inteligentes são um dos maiores benefícios dos dias de hoje, enquanto a sustentabilidade ambiental é um dos maiores desafios. Este estudo pretende integrar as mais recentes inovações em tecnologias inteligentes com o desenvolvimento de redes de energia inteligentes (Smart Grids) e sistemas Peer-to-Peer (P2P) para distribuição energética. Especificamente, investiga as relações complexas entre estes conceitos, enquanto analisa como desenvolvimentos em cada área influenciam e são influenciados pelas outras. Para isso, este estudo responde a três questões de pesquisa. A primeira relaciona-se com a implementação de Sistemas Inteligentes, a segunda com o desenvolvimento de Redes Inteligentes, e a terceira está relacionada com a possibilidade de construir Sistemas P2P. Para obter conclusões relevantes, foi feita uma extensa revisão de literatura relativa a todos os temas, assim como uma análise estatística de três questionários online. Os resultados obtidos mostram que existem influências e conexões significativas entre o desenvolvimento de tecnologias inteligentes e a implementação de Smart Grids e Sistemas P2P, suportando assim múltiplas hipóteses formuladas para este estudo. Com esta base, são retiradas conclusões que confirmam o elevado valor de cada tópico em separado, e o ainda maior valor dos tópicos quando integrados

    Online Government Advice: How to Succeed

    Online advisory services have become ubiquitous and are playing a more vital role in people’s lives.From online loan terms exploration to health care eligibility self-assessment, various services aredelivered to clients through online advisory tools. Government agencies in particular are offering suchservices to the public. Due to increased awareness that government service delivery should be “citizencentric”,this study assesses the impact of providing online advisory systems to assist the public. Buildingon insights from practice and literature, the study utilizes an experiment to empirically examine the keyrole that effective online advisory tools play in generating a sense of empowerment for the generalpublic. The results of the study reveal that optimized explanation features that suit the cognitiveprocesses of users and the resultant process transparency are pivotal in differentiating the winners fromthe losers in the online government advisory services arena. Furthermore, having effective onlineadvisory tools empowers individuals, giving them a better sense of control over their future assessmentoutcome and better perceived power relationships with the government agency to which they arebeholden.
