Merging process models and plant topology
The paper discusses the merging of first principles process models with plant topology derived in an automated way from a process drawing. The resulting structural models should make it easier for a range of methods from the literature to be applied to industrial-scale problems in process operation and design. © 2011 Zhejiang University
On the suitability and development of layout templates for analog layout reuse and layout-aware synthesis
Accelerating the synthesis of increasingly complex analog integrated circuits is key to bridge the widening gap between what we can integrate and what we can design while meeting ever-tightening time-to-market constraints. It is a well-known fact in the semiconductor industry that such goal can only be attained by means of adequate CAD methodologies, techniques, and accompanying tools. This is particularly important in analog physical synthesis (a.k.a. layout generation), where large sensitivities of the circuit performances to the many subtle details of layout implementation (device matching, loading and coupling effects, reliability, and area features are of utmost importance to analog designers), render complete automation a truly challenging task. To approach the problem, two directions have been traditionally considered, knowledge-based and optimization-based, both with their own pros and cons. Besides, recently reported solutions oriented to speed up the overall design flow by means of reuse-based practices or by cutting off time-consuming, error-prone spins between electrical and layout synthesis (a technique known as layout-aware synthesis), rely on a outstandingly rapid yet efficient layout generation method. This paper analyses the suitability of procedural layout generation based on templates (a knowledge-based approach) by examining the requirements that both layout reuse and layout-aware solutions impose, and how layout templates face them. The ability to capture the know-how of experienced layout designers and the turnaround times for layout instancing are considered main comparative aspects in relation to other layout generation approaches. A discussion on the benefit-cost trade-off of using layout templates is also included. In addition to this analysis, the paper delves deeper into systematic techniques to develop fully reusable layout templates for analog circuits, either for a change of the circuit sizing (i.e., layout retargeting) or a change of the fabrication process (i.e., layout migration). Automatic synthesis of analog layout : a survey
A review of recent research in the automatic synthesis of physical geometry for analog integrated circuits is presented. On introduction, an explanation of the difficulties involved in analog layout as opposed to digital layout is covered. Review of the literature then follows. Emphasis is placed on the exposition of general methods for addressing problems specific to analog layout, with the details of specific systems only being given when they surve to illustrate these methods well. The conclusion discusses problems remaining and offers a prediction as to how technology will evolve to solve them. It is argued that although progress has been and will continue to be made in the automation of analog IC layout, due to fundamental differences in the nature of analog IC design as opposed to digital design, it should not be expected that the level of automation of the former will reach that of the latter any time soon
Gaps and requirements for applying automatic architectural design to building renovation
The renovation of existing buildings provides an opportunity to change the layout to meet the needs of facilities and accomplish sustainability in the built environment at high utilisation rates and low cost. However, building renovation design is complex, and completing architectural design schemes manually needs more efficiency and overall robustness. With the use of computational optimisation, automatic architectural design (AAD) can efficiently assist in building renovation through decision-making based on performance evaluation. This paper comprehensively analyses AAD's current research status and provides a state-of-the-art overview of applying AAD technology to building renovation. Besides, gaps and requirements of using AAD for building renovation are explored from quantitative and qualitative aspects, providing ideas for future research. The research shows that there is still much work to be done to apply AAD to building renovation, including quickly obtaining input data, expanding optimisation topics, selecting design methods, and improving workflow and efficiency
Automated sequence and motion planning for robotic spatial extrusion of 3D trusses
While robotic spatial extrusion has demonstrated a new and efficient means to
fabricate 3D truss structures in architectural scale, a major challenge remains
in automatically planning extrusion sequence and robotic motion for trusses
with unconstrained topologies. This paper presents the first attempt in the
field to rigorously formulate the extrusion sequence and motion planning (SAMP)
problem, using a CSP encoding. Furthermore, this research proposes a new
hierarchical planning framework to solve the extrusion SAMP problems that
usually have a long planning horizon and 3D configuration complexity. By
decoupling sequence and motion planning, the planning framework is able to
efficiently solve the extrusion sequence, end-effector poses, joint
configurations, and transition trajectories for spatial trusses with
nonstandard topologies. This paper also presents the first detailed computation
data to reveal the runtime bottleneck on solving SAMP problems, which provides
insight and comparing baseline for future algorithmic development. Together
with the algorithmic results, this paper also presents an open-source and
modularized software implementation called Choreo that is machine-agnostic. To
demonstrate the power of this algorithmic framework, three case studies,
including real fabrication and simulation results, are presented.Comment: 24 pages, 16 figure

Silicon compilation
Silicon compilation is a term used for many different purposes. In this paper we define silicon compilation as a mapping from some higher level description into layout. We define the basic issues in structural and behavioral silicon compilation and some possible solutions to those issues. Finally, we define the concept of an intelligent silicon compiler in which the compiler evaluates the quality of the generated design and attempts to improve it if it is not satisfactory
Noise-Adaptive Compiler Mappings for Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum Computers
A massive gap exists between current quantum computing (QC) prototypes, and
the size and scale required for many proposed QC algorithms. Current QC
implementations are prone to noise and variability which affect their
reliability, and yet with less than 80 quantum bits (qubits) total, they are
too resource-constrained to implement error correction. The term Noisy
Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) refers to these current and near-term systems
of 1000 qubits or less. Given NISQ's severe resource constraints, low
reliability, and high variability in physical characteristics such as coherence
time or error rates, it is of pressing importance to map computations onto them
in ways that use resources efficiently and maximize the likelihood of
successful runs.
This paper proposes and evaluates backend compiler approaches to map and
optimize high-level QC programs to execute with high reliability on NISQ
systems with diverse hardware characteristics. Our techniques all start from an
LLVM intermediate representation of the quantum program (such as would be
generated from high-level QC languages like Scaffold) and generate QC
executables runnable on the IBM Q public QC machine. We then use this framework
to implement and evaluate several optimal and heuristic mapping methods. These
methods vary in how they account for the availability of dynamic machine
calibration data, the relative importance of various noise parameters, the
different possible routing strategies, and the relative importance of
compile-time scalability versus runtime success. Using real-system
measurements, we show that fine grained spatial and temporal variations in
hardware parameters can be exploited to obtain an average x (and up to
x) improvement in program success rate over the industry standard IBM
