Full Diversity Unitary Precoded Integer-Forcing
We consider a point-to-point flat-fading MIMO channel with channel state
information known both at transmitter and receiver. At the transmitter side, a
lattice coding scheme is employed at each antenna to map information symbols to
independent lattice codewords drawn from the same codebook. Each lattice
codeword is then multiplied by a unitary precoding matrix and sent
through the channel. At the receiver side, an integer-forcing (IF) linear
receiver is employed. We denote this scheme as unitary precoded integer-forcing
(UPIF). We show that UPIF can achieve full-diversity under a constraint based
on the shortest vector of a lattice generated by the precoding matrix . This constraint and a simpler version of that provide design criteria for
two types of full-diversity UPIF. Type I uses a unitary precoder that adapts at
each channel realization. Type II uses a unitary precoder, which remains fixed
for all channel realizations. We then verify our results by computer
simulations in , and MIMO using different QAM
constellations. We finally show that the proposed Type II UPIF outperform the
MIMO precoding X-codes at high data rates.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, to appear in IEEE-TW
Precoder design for space-time coded systems over correlated Rayleigh fading channels using convex optimization
A class of computationally efficient linear precoders for space-time block coded multiple-input multiple-output wireless systems is derived based on the minimization of the exact symbol error rate (SER) and its upper bound. Both correlations at the transmitter and receiver are assumed to be present, and only statistical channel state information in the form of the transmit and receive correlation matrices is assumed to be available at the transmitter. The convexity of the design based on SER minimization is established and exploited. The advantage of the developed technique is its low complexity. We also find various relationships of the proposed designs to the existing precoding techniques, and derive very simple closed-form precoders for special cases such as two or three receive antennas and constant receive correlation. The numerical simulations illustrate the excellent SER performance of the proposed precoders
Joint Source and Relay Precoding Designs for MIMO Two-Way Relaying Based on MSE Criterion
Properly designed precoders can significantly improve the spectral efficiency
of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. In this paper, we
investigate joint source and relay precoding design based on the
mean-square-error (MSE) criterion in MIMO two-way relay systems, where two
multi-antenna source nodes exchange information via a multi-antenna
amplify-and-forward relay node. This problem is non-convex and its optimal
solution remains unsolved. Aiming to find an efficient way to solve the
problem, we first decouple the primal problem into three tractable
sub-problems, and then propose an iterative precoding design algorithm based on
alternating optimization. The solution to each sub-problem is optimal and
unique, thus the convergence of the iterative algorithm is guaranteed.
Secondly, we propose a structured precoding design to lower the computational
complexity. The proposed precoding structure is able to parallelize the
channels in the multiple access (MAC) phase and broadcast (BC) phase. It thus
reduces the precoding design to a simple power allocation problem. Lastly, for
the special case where only a single data stream is transmitted from each
source node, we present a source-antenna-selection (SAS) based precoding design
algorithm. This algorithm selects only one antenna for transmission from each
source and thus requires lower signalling overhead. Comprehensive simulation is
conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of all the proposed precoding designs.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figure
Robust Linear Precoder Design for Multi-cell Downlink Transmission
Coordinated information processing by the base stations of multi-cell
wireless networks enhances the overall quality of communication in the network.
Such coordinations for optimizing any desired network-wide quality of service
(QoS) necessitate the base stations to acquire and share some channel state
information (CSI). With perfect knowledge of channel states, the base stations
can adjust their transmissions for achieving a network-wise QoS optimality. In
practice, however, the CSI can be obtained only imperfectly. As a result, due
to the uncertainties involved, the network is not guaranteed to benefit from a
globally optimal QoS. Nevertheless, if the channel estimation perturbations are
confined within bounded regions, the QoS measure will also lie within a bounded
region. Therefore, by exploiting the notion of robustness in the worst-case
sense some worst-case QoS guarantees for the network can be asserted. We adopt
a popular model for noisy channel estimates that assumes that estimation noise
terms lie within known hyper-spheres. We aim to design linear transceivers that
optimize a worst-case QoS measure in downlink transmissions. In particular, we
focus on maximizing the worst-case weighted sum-rate of the network and the
minimum worst-case rate of the network. For obtaining such transceiver designs,
we offer several centralized (fully cooperative) and distributed (limited
cooperation) algorithms which entail different levels of complexity and
information exchange among the base stations.Comment: 38 Pages, 7 Figures, To appear in the IEEE Transactions on Signal

Design of Block Transceivers with Decision Feedback Detection
This paper presents a method for jointly designing the transmitter-receiver
pair in a block-by-block communication system that employs (intra-block)
decision feedback detection. We provide closed-form expressions for
transmitter-receiver pairs that simultaneously minimize the arithmetic mean
squared error (MSE) at the decision point (assuming perfect feedback), the
geometric MSE, and the bit error rate of a uniformly bit-loaded system at
moderate-to-high signal-to-noise ratios. Separate expressions apply for the
``zero-forcing'' and ``minimum MSE'' (MMSE) decision feedback structures. In
the MMSE case, the proposed design also maximizes the Gaussian mutual
information and suggests that one can approach the capacity of the block
transmission system using (independent instances of) the same (Gaussian) code
for each element of the block. Our simulation studies indicate that the
proposed transceivers perform significantly better than standard transceivers,
and that they retain their performance advantages in the presence of error
propagation.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, to appear in the IEEE Transactions on Signal

A quaternion-based approach to interference alignment with Alamouti coding
Based on the representation of Alamouti space-time codewords as quaternions, this paper proposes a scheme that combines interference alignment (IA) with Alamouti signals. The proposed formulation allows for a separation of the space-time block coding (to gain spatial diversity) and the IA precoding (to reduce or ideally suppress interference). Although this separation is not necessarily optimal, the splitting of alignment precoding and Alamouti encoding is particularly convenient because it enables the independent optimization of the IA solution using quaternionic versions of standard alternating optimization techniques such as the maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise algorithm. Some numerical simulations are included to compare the performance of the proposed quaternion IA+Alamouti algorithm with standard IA algorithms in the complex domain as well as with interference cancellation schemes at the receiver side. This work has been supported by the Ministerio de EconomĂa, Industria y Competitividad (MINECO) of Spain, under grants TEC2013-47141-C4-R (RACHEL), TEC2016-75067-C4-4-R (CARMEN), and FPI grant BES-2014-06978
