    Towards an Erlang formula for multiclass networks

    International audienceConsider a multiclass stochastic network with state-dependent service rates and arrival rates describing bandwidth-sharing mechanisms as well as admission control and/or load balancing schemes. Given Poisson arrival and exponential service requirements, the number of customers in the network evolves as a multi-dimensional birth-and-death process on a finite subset of â„•. We assume that the death (i.e., service) rates and the birth rates depending on the whole state of the system satisfy a local balance condition. This makes the resulting network a Whittle network, and the stochastic process describing the state of the network is reversible with an explicit stationary distribution that is in fact insensitive to the service time distribution. Given routing constraints, we are interested in the optimal performance of such networks. We first construct bounds for generic performance criteria that can be evaluated using recursive procedures, these bounds being attained in the case of a unique arrival process. We then study the case of several arrival processes, focusing in particular on the instance with admission control only. Building on convexity properties, we characterize the optimal policy, and give criteria on the service rates for which our bounds are again attained

    Towards a Queueing-Based Framework for In-Network Function Computation

    We seek to develop network algorithms for function computation in sensor networks. Specifically, we want dynamic joint aggregation, routing, and scheduling algorithms that have analytically provable performance benefits due to in-network computation as compared to simple data forwarding. To this end, we define a class of functions, the Fully-Multiplexible functions, which includes several functions such as parity, MAX, and k th -order statistics. For such functions we exactly characterize the maximum achievable refresh rate of the network in terms of an underlying graph primitive, the min-mincut. In acyclic wireline networks, we show that the maximum refresh rate is achievable by a simple algorithm that is dynamic, distributed, and only dependent on local information. In the case of wireless networks, we provide a MaxWeight-like algorithm with dynamic flow splitting, which is shown to be throughput-optimal

    Dynamic Vehicle Routing for Robotic Systems

    Recent years have witnessed great advancements in the science and technology of autonomy, robotics, and networking. This paper surveys recent concepts and algorithms for dynamic vehicle routing (DVR), that is, for the automatic planning of optimal multivehicle routes to perform tasks that are generated over time by an exogenous process. We consider a rich variety of scenarios relevant for robotic applications. We begin by reviewing the basic DVR problem: demands for service arrive at random locations at random times and a vehicle travels to provide on-site service while minimizing the expected wait time of the demands. Next, we treat different multivehicle scenarios based on different models for demands (e.g., demands with different priority levels and impatient demands), vehicles (e.g., motion constraints, communication, and sensing capabilities), and tasks. The performance criterion used in these scenarios is either the expected wait time of the demands or the fraction of demands serviced successfully. In each specific DVR scenario, we adopt a rigorous technical approach that relies upon methods from queueing theory, combinatorial optimization, and stochastic geometry. First, we establish fundamental limits on the achievable performance, including limits on stability and quality of service. Second, we design algorithms, and provide provable guarantees on their performance with respect to the fundamental limits.United States.     Concave Switching in Single and Multihop Networks

    Switched queueing networks model wireless networks, input queued switches and numerous other networked communications systems. For single-hop networks, we consider a {(α,g\alpha,g)-switch policy} which combines the MaxWeight policies with bandwidth sharing networks -- a further well studied model of Internet congestion. We prove the maximum stability property for this class of randomized policies. Thus these policies have the same first order behavior as the MaxWeight policies. However, for multihop networks some of these generalized polices address a number of critical weakness of the MaxWeight/BackPressure policies. For multihop networks with fixed routing, we consider the Proportional Scheduler (or (1,log)-policy). In this setting, the BackPressure policy is maximum stable, but must maintain a queue for every route-destination, which typically grows rapidly with a network's size. However, this proportionally fair policy only needs to maintain a queue for each outgoing link, which is typically bounded in number. As is common with Internet routing, by maintaining per-link queueing each node only needs to know the next hop for each packet and not its entire route. Further, in contrast to BackPressure, the Proportional Scheduler does not compare downstream queue lengths to determine weights, only local link information is required. This leads to greater potential for decomposed implementations of the policy. Through a reduction argument and an entropy argument, we demonstrate that, whilst maintaining substantially less queueing overhead, the Proportional Scheduler achieves maximum throughput stability.Comment: 28 page

    Store-Forward and its implications for Proportional Scheduling

    The Proportional Scheduler was recently proposed as a scheduling algorithm for multi-hop switch networks. For these networks, the BackPressure scheduler is the classical benchmark. For networks with fixed routing, the Proportional Scheduler is maximum stable, myopic and, furthermore, will alleviate certain scaling issued found in BackPressure for large networks. Nonetheless, the equilibrium and delay properties of the Proportional Scheduler has not been fully characterized. In this article, we postulate on the equilibrium behaviour of the Proportional Scheduler though the analysis of an analogous rule called the Store-Forward allocation. It has been shown that Store-Forward has asymptotically allocates according to the Proportional Scheduler. Further, for Store-Forward networks, numerous equilibrium quantities are explicitly calculable. For FIFO networks under Store-Forward, we calculate the policies stationary distribution and end-to-end route delay. We discuss network topologies when the stationary distribution is product-form, a phenomenon which we call \emph{product form resource pooling}. We extend this product form notion to independent set scheduling on perfect graphs, where we show that non-neighbouring queues are statistically independent. Finally, we analyse the large deviations behaviour of the equilibrium distribution of Store-Forward networks in order to construct Lyapunov functions for FIFO switch networks

    Dynamic Multi-Vehicle Routing with Multiple Classes of Demands

    In this paper we study a dynamic vehicle routing problem in which there are multiple vehicles and multiple classes of demands. Demands of each class arrive in the environment randomly over time and require a random amount of on-site service that is characteristic of the class. To service a demand, one of the vehicles must travel to the demand location and remain there for the required on-site service time. The quality of service provided to each class is given by the expected delay between the arrival of a demand in the class, and that demand's service completion. The goal is to design a routing policy for the service vehicles which minimizes a convex combination of the delays for each class. First, we provide a lower bound on the achievable values of the convex combination of delays. Then, we propose a novel routing policy and analyze its performance under heavy load conditions (i.e., when the fraction of time the service vehicles spend performing on-site service approaches one). The policy performs within a constant factor of the lower bound (and thus the optimal), where the constant depends only on the number of classes, and is independent of the number of vehicles, the arrival rates of demands, the on-site service times, and the convex combination coefficients.Comment: Extended version of paper presented in American Control Conference 200

    Stable Wireless Network Control Under Service Constraints

    We consider the design of wireless queueing network control policies with particular focus on combining stability with additional application-dependent requirements. Thereby, we consequently pursue a cost function based approach that provides the flexibility to incorporate constraints and requirements of particular services or applications. As typical examples of such requirements, we consider the reduction of buffer underflows in case of streaming traffic, and energy efficiency in networks of battery powered nodes. Compared to the classical throughput optimal control problem, such requirements significantly complicate the control problem. We provide easily verifyable theoretical conditions for stability, and, additionally, compare various candidate cost functions applied to wireless networks with streaming media traffic. Moreover, we demonstrate how the framework can be applied to the problem of energy efficient routing, and we demonstrate the aplication of our framework in cross-layer control problems for wireless multihop networks, using an advanced power control scheme for interference mitigation, based on successive convex approximation.
