Opportunities and Challenges with Autonomous Micro Aerial Vehicles, The Int.
Abstract We survey the recent work on micro-UAVs, a fast-growing field in robotics, outlining the opportunities for research and applications, along with the scientific and technological challenges. Micro-UAVs can operate in three-dimensional environments, explore and map multi-story buildings, manipulate and transport objects, and even perform such tasks as assembly. While fixed-base industrial robots were the main focus in the first two decades of robotics, and mobile robots enabled most of the significant advances during the next two decades, it is likely that UAVs, and particularly micro-UAVs will provide a major impetus for the third phase of development
Sampling-based Motion Planning for Active Multirotor System Identification
This paper reports on an algorithm for planning trajectories that allow a
multirotor micro aerial vehicle (MAV) to quickly identify a set of unknown
parameters. In many problems like self calibration or model parameter
identification some states are only observable under a specific motion. These
motions are often hard to find, especially for inexperienced users. Therefore,
we consider system model identification in an active setting, where the vehicle
autonomously decides what actions to take in order to quickly identify the
model. Our algorithm approximates the belief dynamics of the system around a
candidate trajectory using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). It uses
sampling-based motion planning to explore the space of possible beliefs and
find a maximally informative trajectory within a user-defined budget. We
validate our method in simulation and on a real system showing the feasibility
and repeatability of the proposed approach. Our planner creates trajectories
which reduce model parameter convergence time and uncertainty by a factor of
four.Comment: Published at ICRA 2017. Video available at

Vision-Based Autonomous Landing of a Quadrotor on the Perturbed Deck of an Unmanned Surface Vehicle
Autonomous landing on the deck of an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) is still a major challenge for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In this paper, a fiducial marker is located on the platform so as to facilitate the task since it is possible to retrieve its six-degrees of freedom relative-pose in an easy way. To compensate interruption in the marker’s observations, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) estimates the current USV’s position with reference to the last known position. Validation experiments have been performed in a simulated environment under various marine conditions. The results confirmed that the EKF provides estimates accurate enough to direct the UAV in proximity of the autonomous vessel such that the marker becomes visible again. Using only the odometry and the inertial measurements for the estimation, this method is found to be applicable even under adverse weather conditions in the absence of the global positioning system
Enhanced proportional-derivative control of a micro quadcopter
ABSTRACT This paper studies the design of an enhanced proportionalderivative (PD) controller to improve the transient response of a micro quadrotor helicopter (quadcopter Introduction Micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) have a wingspan less than 0.15 m and a mass less than 0.1 kg The control of quadcopters has mostly been focused on ma
