Internationalisation of Innovation: Why Chip Design Moving to Asia
This paper will appear in International Journal of Innovation Management, special issue in honor of Keith Pavitt, (Peter Augsdoerfer, Jonathan Sapsed, and James Utterback, guest editors), forthcoming. Among Keith Pavitt's many contributions to the study of innovation is the proposition that physical proximity is advantageous for innovative activities that involve highly complex technological knowledge But chip design, a process that creates the greatest value in the electronics industry and that requires highly complex knowledge, is experiencing a massive dispersion to leading Asian electronics exporting countries. To explain why chip design is moving to Asia, the paper draws on interviews with 60 companies and 15 research institutions that are doing leading-edge chip design in Asia. I demonstrate that "pull" and "policy" factors explain what attracts design to particular locations. But to get to the root causes that shift the balance in favor of geographical decentralization, I examine "push" factors, i.e. changes in design methodology ("system-on-chip design") and organization ("vertical specialization" within global design networks). The resultant increase in knowledge mobility explains why chip design - that, in Pavitt's framework is not supposed to move - is moving from the traditional centers to a few new specialized design clusters in Asia. E-COMMERCE: ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM FOR AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY
Nowadays, Internet has become an important element in our day to day life. The
technology regarding Internet also has improved a lot since it is introduce a long
time ago. It created a borderless world for people to communicate and seek for
information and new knowledge. The project is about developing a web site for
automobile company that provides product information that available for sale. The
reason for this project is to encourage more Malaysians to use Internet as a medium
for online shopping to increase the rate of Internet usage in Malaysia, and to provide
an automobile service to people who interested to survey product information
through online. The objective of this project is to develop a website for automobile
industry. It is to promote and provide information to potential customers where it
can be accessed at anytime and anywhere using web browser. Next, is to develop 3D
car model using VRML in order to integrate with the company website. It is to
enhance the level of understanding and realism of product being sold through
Internet. The website is developed using System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
approach. It consists of four phases; analysis phase, design phase, development
phase, and evaluation phase. The methodology is used to plan the development of
the project. To evaluate the efficiency ofthe website in overcoming the problems, a
test has been conducted. From the test, it seems that the participants are willing to
try this kind ofservice and agree that automobile industry can gain benefits from the
Internet. As to conclude, we must firstly understand the drivers of the technology
innovation. Malaysia has a huge potential for Internet procurement and we shall not
wasting the advantage that we have
Using virtual reality and 3D industrial numerical models for immersive interactive checklists
At the different stages of the PLM, companies develop numerous checklist-based procedures involving prototype inspection and testing. Besides, techniques from CAD, 3D imaging, animation and virtual reality now form a mature set of tools for industrial applications. The work presented in this article develops a unique framework for immersive checklist-based project reviews that applies to all steps of the PLM. It combines immersive navigation in the checklist, virtual experiments when needed and multimedia update of the checklist. It provides a generic tool, independent of the considered checklist, relies on the integration of various VR tools and concepts, in a modular way, and uses an original gesture recognition. Feasibility experiments are presented, validating the benefits of the approach

Emerging Trend of E-Commerce in India: Some Crucial Issues, Prospects and Challenges
Since 1991, after economic reforms explicitly took place in India as a result of opening-up of the economy with a view to integrate itself with the global economy, the need to facilitate international trade both through policy and procedure reforms has become the foundation stone of India's trade and fiscal policies. Electronic commerce (e-commerce) as part of the information technology revolution became widely used in the world trade in general and Indian economy in particular. With advancements in technology, there have been changes in the methodology for business transactions. India, being a rapid adaptor of technology is apace with the current scenario of electronic data exchanges and has taken to e-commerce. In view of this, this article tries to present a snapshot of the evolution of e-commerce business indicating the chronological order, category of e-commerce business, description of organizations involved in e-businesses in India, key characteristics of the firms engaged in e-commerce application, to examine the growth of e-commerce in both physical and financial terms, to evaluate the benefits obtained from e-business, to critically analyze the barriers and constraints involved in flourishing e-commerce businesses in India and finally to develop a framework for effective dissemination of e-commerce in India. The role of governmentĂÂ should be to provide a legal framework for e-commerce so that while domestic and international trade are allowed to expand their horizons, basic rights such as privacy, intellectual property, prevention of fraud, consumer protection etc are all taken care of.
