An Overview of Drone Energy Consumption Factors and Models
At present, there is a growing demand for drones with diverse capabilities
that can be used in both civilian and military applications, and this topic is
receiving increasing attention. When it comes to drone operations, the amount
of energy they consume is a determining factor in their ability to achieve
their full potential. According to this, it appears that it is necessary to
identify the factors affecting the energy consumption of the unmanned air
vehicle (UAV) during the mission process, as well as examine the general
factors that influence the consumption of energy. This chapter aims to provide
an overview of the current state of research in the area of UAV energy
consumption and provide general categorizations of factors affecting UAV's
energy consumption as well as an investigation of different energy models
Introduction to Drone Detection Radar with Emphasis on Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) technology
This paper discusses the challenges of detecting and categorizing small
drones with radar automatic target recognition (ATR) technology. The authors
suggest integrating ATR capabilities into drone detection radar systems to
improve performance and manage emerging threats. The study focuses primarily on
drones in Group 1 and 2. The paper highlights the need to consider kinetic
features and signal signatures, such as micro-Doppler, in ATR techniques to
efficiently recognize small drones. The authors also present a comprehensive
drone detection radar system design that balances detection and tracking
requirements, incorporating parameter adjustment based on scattering region
theory. They offer an example of a performance improvement achieved using
feedback and situational awareness mechanisms with the integrated ATR
capabilities. Furthermore, the paper examines challenges related to one-way
attack drones and explores the potential of cognitive radar as a solution. The
integration of ATR capabilities transforms a 3D radar system into a 4D radar
system, resulting in improved drone detection performance. These advancements
are useful in military, civilian, and commercial applications, and ongoing
research and development efforts are essential to keep radar systems effective
and ready to detect, track, and respond to emerging threats.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, submitted to a journal and being under revie
Smart Manufacturing
This book is a collection of 11 articles that are published in the corresponding Machines Special Issue “Smart Manufacturing”. It represents the quality, breadth and depth of the most updated study in smart manufacturing (SM); in particular, digital technologies are deployed to enhance system smartness by (1) empowering physical resources in production, (2) utilizing virtual and dynamic assets over the Internet to expand system capabilities, (3) supporting data-driven decision-making activities at various domains and levels of businesses, or (4) reconfiguring systems to adapt to changes and uncertainties. System smartness can be evaluated by one or a combination of performance metrics such as degree of automation, cost-effectiveness, leanness, robustness, flexibility, adaptability, sustainability, and resilience. This book features, firstly, the concepts digital triad (DT-II) and Internet of digital triad things (IoDTT), proposed to deal with the complexity, dynamics, and scalability of complex systems simultaneously. This book also features a comprehensive survey of the applications of digital technologies in space instruments; a systematic literature search method is used to investigate the impact of product design and innovation on the development of space instruments. In addition, the survey provides important information and critical considerations for using cutting edge digital technologies in designing and manufacturing space instruments
A custom computing framework for orientation and photogrammetry
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2000.Includes bibliographical references (p. 211-223).This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections. There is great demand today for real-time computer vision systems, with applications including image enhancement, target detection and surveillance, autonomous navigation, and scene reconstruction. These operations generally require extensive computing power; when multiple conventional processors and custom gate arrays are inappropriate, due to either excessive cost or risk, a class of devices known as Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) can be employed. FPGAs per the flexibility of a programmable solution and nearly the performance of a custom gate array. When implementing a custom algorithm in an FPGA, one must be more efficient than with a gate array technology. By tailoring the algorithms, architectures, and precisions, the gate count of an algorithm may be sufficiently reduced to t into an FPGA. The challenge is to perform this customization of the algorithm, while still maintaining the required performance. The techniques required to perform algorithmic optimization for FPGAs are scattered across many fields; what is currently lacking is a framework for utilizing all these well known and developing techniques. The purpose of this thesis is to develop this framework for orientation and photogrammetry systems.by Paul D. Fiore.Ph.D
