Near-Optimal Energy-Efficient Joint Resource Allocation for Multi-Hop MIMO-AF Systems
Energy efficiency (EE) is becoming an important performance indicator for ensuring both the economical and environmental sustainability of the next generation of communication networks. Equally, cooperative communication is an effective way of improving communication system performances. In this paper, we propose a near-optimal energy-efficient joint resource allocation algorithm for multi-hop multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) systems. We first show how to simplify the multivariate unconstrained EE-based problem, based on the fact that this problem has a unique optimal solution, and then solve it by means of a low-complexity algorithm. We compare our approach with classic optimization tools in terms of energy efficiency as well as complexity, and results indicate the near-optimality and low-complexity of our approach. As an application, we use our approach to compare the EE of multi-hop MIMO-AF with MIMO systems and our results show that the former outperforms the latter mainly when the direct link quality is poor
Hybrid Transceiver Optimization for Multi-Hop Communications
Multi-hop communication with the aid of large-scale antenna arrays will play
a vital role in future emergence communication systems. In this paper, we
investigate amplify-and-forward based and multiple-input multiple-output
assisted multi-hop communication, in which all nodes employ hybrid
transceivers. Moreover, channel errors are taken into account in our hybrid
transceiver design. Based on the matrix-monotonic optimization framework, the
optimal structures of the robust hybrid transceivers are derived. By utilizing
these optimal structures, the optimizations of analog transceivers and digital
transceivers can be separated without loss of optimality. This fact greatly
simplifies the joint optimization of analog and digital transceivers. Since the
optimization of analog transceivers under unit-modulus constraints is
non-convex, a projection type algorithm is proposed for analog transceiver
optimization to overcome this difficulty. Based on the derived analog
transceivers, the optimal digital transceivers can then be derived using
matrix-monotonic optimization. Numeral results obtained demonstrate the
performance advantages of the proposed hybrid transceiver designs over other
existing solutions.Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures. This manuscript has been submitted to IEEE

Linear Precoders for Non-Regenerative Asymmetric Two-way Relaying in Cellular Systems
Two-way relaying (TWR) reduces the spectral-efficiency loss caused in
conventional half-duplex relaying. TWR is possible when two nodes exchange data
simultaneously through a relay. In cellular systems, data exchange between base
station (BS) and users is usually not simultaneous e.g., a user (TUE) has
uplink data to transmit during multiple access (MAC) phase, but does not have
downlink data to receive during broadcast (BC) phase. This non-simultaneous
data exchange will reduce TWR to spectrally-inefficient conventional
half-duplex relaying. With infrastructure relays, where multiple users
communicate through a relay, a new transmission protocol is proposed to recover
the spectral loss. The BC phase following the MAC phase of TUE is now used by
the relay to transmit downlink data to another user (RUE). RUE will not be able
to cancel the back-propagating interference. A structured precoder is designed
at the multi-antenna relay to cancel this interference. With multiple-input
multiple-output (MIMO) nodes, the proposed precoder also triangulates the
compound MAC and BC phase MIMO channels. The channel triangulation reduces the
weighted sum-rate optimization to power allocation problem, which is then cast
as a geometric program. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the
proposed protocol over conventional solutions.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless

Linear Precoding Designs for Amplify-and-Forward Multiuser Two-Way Relay Systems
Two-way relaying can improve spectral efficiency in two-user cooperative
communications. It also has great potential in multiuser systems. A major
problem of designing a multiuser two-way relay system (MU-TWRS) is transceiver
or precoding design to suppress co-channel interference. This paper aims to
study linear precoding designs for a cellular MU-TWRS where a multi-antenna
base station (BS) conducts bi-directional communications with multiple mobile
stations (MSs) via a multi-antenna relay station (RS) with amplify-and-forward
relay strategy. The design goal is to optimize uplink performance, including
total mean-square error (Total-MSE) and sum rate, while maintaining individual
signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirement for downlink
signals. We show that the BS precoding design with the RS precoder fixed can be
converted to a standard second order cone programming (SOCP) and the optimal
solution is obtained efficiently. The RS precoding design with the BS precoder
fixed, on the other hand, is non-convex and we present an iterative algorithm
to find a local optimal solution. Then, the joint BS-RS precoding is obtained
by solving the BS precoding and the RS precoding alternately. Comprehensive
simulation is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed
precoding designs.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, Accepted by IEEE TW
Joint power allocation for MIMO-OFDM full-duplex relaying communications
© 2017, The Author(s). In this paper, we address the problem of joint power allocation in a two-hop MIMO-OFDM network, where two full-duplex users communicate with each other via an amplify-and-forward relay. We consider a general model in which the full-duplex relay can forward the received message in either one-way or two-way mode. Our aim is to maximize the instantaneous end-to-end total throughput, subject to (i) the separate sum-power constraints at individual nodes or (ii) the joint sum-power constraint of the whole network. The formulated problems are large-scale nonconvex optimization problems, for which efficient and optimal solutions are currently not available. Using the successive convex approximation approach, we develop novel iterative algorithms of extremely low complexity which are especially suitable for large-scale computation. In each iteration, a simple closed-form solution is derived for the approximated convex program. The proposed algorithms guarantee to converge to at least a local optimum of the nonconvex problems. Numerical results verify that the devised solutions converge quickly, and that our optimal power allocation schemes significantly improve the throughput of MIMO-OFDM full-duplex one-way/two-way relaying over the conventional half-duplex relaying strategy
Resource Allocation for Outdoor-to-Indoor Multicarrier Transmission with Shared UE-side Distributed Antenna Systems
In this paper, we study the resource allocation algorithm design for downlink
multicarrier transmission with a shared user equipment (UE)-side distributed
antenna system (SUDAS) which utilizes both licensed and unlicensed frequency
bands for improving the system throughput. The joint UE selection and
transceiver processing matrix design is formulated as a non-convex optimization
problem for the maximization of the end-to-end system throughput (bits/s). In
order to obtain a tractable resource allocation algorithm, we first show that
the optimal transmitter precoding and receiver post-processing matrices jointly
diagonalize the end-to-end communication channel. Subsequently, the
optimization problem is converted to a scalar optimization problem for multiple
parallel channels, which is solved by using an asymptotically optimal iterative
algorithm. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed resource allocation
algorithm for the SUDAS achieves an excellent system performance and provides a
spatial multiplexing gain for single-antenna UEs.Comment: accepted for publication at the IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference

A Tutorial on the Optimization of Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relay Systems
The remarkable promise of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channels has motivated an intense research activity to characterize the theoretical and practical issues associated with the design of transmit (source) and receive (destination) processing matrices under different operating conditions. This activity was primarily focused on point-to-point (single-hop) communications but more recently there has been an extensive work on two-hop or multi-hop settings in which single or multiple relays are used to deliver the information from the source to the destination. The aim of this tutorial is to provide an up-to-date overview of the fundamental results and practical implementation issues of designing amplify-and-forward MIMO relay systems
