Minimal classes of graphs of unbounded clique-width defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs
We discover new hereditary classes of graphs that are minimal (with respect
to set inclusion) of unbounded clique-width. The new examples include split
permutation graphs and bichain graphs. Each of these classes is characterised
by a finite list of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs. These, therefore,
disprove a conjecture due to Daligault, Rao and Thomasse from 2010 claiming
that all such minimal classes must be defined by infinitely many forbidden
induced subgraphs.
In the same paper, Daligault, Rao and Thomasse make another conjecture that
every hereditary class of unbounded clique-width must contain a labelled
infinite antichain. We show that the two example classes we consider here
satisfy this conjecture. Indeed, they each contain a canonical labelled
infinite antichain, which leads us to propose a stronger conjecture: that every
hereditary class of graphs that is minimal of unbounded clique-width contains a
canonical labelled infinite antichain.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
Letter graphs and geometric grid classes of permutations: characterization and recognition
In this paper, we reveal an intriguing relationship between two seemingly
unrelated notions: letter graphs and geometric grid classes of permutations. An
important property common for both of them is well-quasi-orderability,
implying, in a non-constructive way, a polynomial-time recognition of geometric
grid classes of permutations and -letter graphs for a fixed . However,
constructive algorithms are available only for . In this paper, we present
the first constructive polynomial-time algorithm for the recognition of
-letter graphs. It is based on a structural characterization of graphs in
this class.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1108.6319 by other author
Partitioning Perfect Graphs into Stars
The partition of graphs into "nice" subgraphs is a central algorithmic
problem with strong ties to matching theory. We study the partitioning of
undirected graphs into same-size stars, a problem known to be NP-complete even
for the case of stars on three vertices. We perform a thorough computational
complexity study of the problem on subclasses of perfect graphs and identify
several polynomial-time solvable cases, for example, on interval graphs and
bipartite permutation graphs, and also NP-complete cases, for example, on grid
graphs and chordal graphs.Comment: Manuscript accepted to Journal of Graph Theor
-product and -threshold graphs
This paper is the continuation of the research of the author and his
colleagues of the {\it canonical} decomposition of graphs. The idea of the
canonical decomposition is to define the binary operation on the set of graphs
and to represent the graph under study as a product of prime elements with
respect to this operation. We consider the graph together with the arbitrary
partition of its vertex set into subsets (-partitioned graph). On the
set of -partitioned graphs distinguished up to isomorphism we consider the
binary algebraic operation (-product of graphs), determined by the
digraph . It is proved, that every operation defines the unique
factorization as a product of prime factors. We define -threshold graphs as
graphs, which could be represented as the product of one-vertex
factors, and the threshold-width of the graph as the minimum size of
such, that is -threshold. -threshold graphs generalize the classes of
threshold graphs and difference graphs and extend their properties. We show,
that the threshold-width is defined for all graphs, and give the
characterization of graphs with fixed threshold-width. We study in detail the
graphs with threshold-widths 1 and 2
Solving MaxSAT and #SAT on structured CNF formulas
In this paper we propose a structural parameter of CNF formulas and use it to
identify instances of weighted MaxSAT and #SAT that can be solved in polynomial
time. Given a CNF formula we say that a set of clauses is precisely satisfiable
if there is some complete assignment satisfying these clauses only. Let the
ps-value of the formula be the number of precisely satisfiable sets of clauses.
Applying the notion of branch decompositions to CNF formulas and using ps-value
as cut function, we define the ps-width of a formula. For a formula given with
a decomposition of polynomial ps-width we show dynamic programming algorithms
solving weighted MaxSAT and #SAT in polynomial time. Combining with results of
'Belmonte and Vatshelle, Graph classes with structured neighborhoods and
algorithmic applications, Theor. Comput. Sci. 511: 54-65 (2013)' we get
polynomial-time algorithms solving weighted MaxSAT and #SAT for some classes of
structured CNF formulas. For example, we get algorithms for
formulas of clauses and variables and size , if has a linear
ordering of the variables and clauses such that for any variable occurring
in clause , if appears before then any variable between them also
occurs in , and if appears before then occurs also in any clause
between them. Note that the class of incidence graphs of such formulas do not
have bounded clique-width
Induced Minor Free Graphs: Isomorphism and Clique-width
Given two graphs and , we say that contains as an induced
minor if a graph isomorphic to can be obtained from by a sequence of
vertex deletions and edge contractions. We study the complexity of Graph
Isomorphism on graphs that exclude a fixed graph as an induced minor. More
precisely, we determine for every graph that Graph Isomorphism is
polynomial-time solvable on -induced-minor-free graphs or that it is
GI-complete. Additionally, we classify those graphs for which
-induced-minor-free graphs have bounded clique-width. These two results
complement similar dichotomies for graphs that exclude a fixed graph as an
induced subgraph, minor, or subgraph.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. An extended abstract of this paper previously
