    Previous theoretical studies on the effectiveness of partition testing and random testing have assumed that test cases are selected with replacement. Although this assumption has been well known to be less realistic, it has still been used in previous theoretical work because it renders the analyses more tractable. This paper presents a theoretical investigation aimed at comparing the effectiveness when test cases are selected with and without replacement, and exploring the relationships between these two scenarios.     Proportional sampling strategy: A compendium and some insights

    There have been numerous studies on the effectiveness of partition and random testing. In particular, the proportional sampling (PS) strategy has been proved, under certain conditions, to be the only form of partition testing that outperforms random testing regardless of where the failure-causing inputs are. This paper provides an integrated synthesis and overview of our recent studies on the PS strategy and its related work. Through this synthesis, we offer a perspective that properly interprets the results obtained so far, and present some of the interesting issues involved and new insights obtained during the course of this research. © 2001 Elsevier Science Inc.     Collaborative searching for video using the FĂ­schlĂĄr system and a DiamondTouch table

    Fischlar DT is one of a family of systems which support interactive searching and browsing through an archive of digital video information. Previous Fischlar systems have used a conventional screen, keyboard and mouse interface, but Fischlar-DT operates with using a horizontal, multiuser, touch sensitive tabletop known as a DiamondTouch. We present the Fischlar-DT system partly from a systems perspective, but mostly in terms of how its design and functionality supports collaborative searching. The contribution of the paper is thus the introduction of Fischlar-DT and a description of how design concerns for supporting collaborative search can be realised on a tabletop interface

    Heterogeneous Employment Effects of Job Search Programmes: A Machine Learning Approach

    We systematically investigate the effect heterogeneity of job search programmes for unemployed workers. To investigate possibly heterogeneous employment effects, we combine non-experimental causal empirical models with Lasso-type estimators. The empirical analyses are based on rich administrative data from Swiss social security records. We find considerable heterogeneities only during the first six months after the start of training. Consistent with previous results of the literature, unemployed persons with fewer employment opportunities profit more from participating in these programmes. Furthermore, we also document heterogeneous employment effects by residence status. Finally, we show the potential of easy-to-implement programme participation rules for improving average employment effects of these active labour market programmes

    Evaluation of a sliding mode fault tolerant controller on the MuPAL-α research aircraft

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this recordThis paper presents piloted flight test results of a sliding mode fault tolerant control scheme implemented on the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's MuPAL-α research aircraft. These results represent unique piloted validation tests of a sliding mode fault tolerant control allocation scheme on a full-scale aircraft operating in the presence of actuator faults. The control law used here does not require the presence of a fault detection and isolation unit and therefore in the event of faults/failures, the actuator effectiveness levels are unknown. In the absence of this information, a fixed control allocation mechanism has been used in order to retain nominal fault-free performance. The control scheme has been implemented on the lateral-directional motion and incorporated within the experimental fly-by-wire system. Piloted flight test results show that close to nominal tracking performance can be maintained despite the presence of unknown actuator faults as well as actuator uncertainties.European UnionJapan New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organizatio
